12v dead on road trip. Can I limp home by jumping it every time I stop overnight?
If I pop the hood when I stop and just jump it every time. Any danger of bad things happening while driving?

Why not just get a new battery? It just takes a few minutes.
how far from a service center and can they get a mobile tech out to you? Also - what year is your Tesla?
You can buy a replacement at AutoZone and swap it out. It is not too hard to replace.
Is there a way to tell ahead of time when you need to change the 12V battery? Eg every two years?
Unless you have a pre-2021 Model Y, it’s a 15.5V battery.
I have heard 3 to 5
Should be fine.

Don’t be like me. Replace it now. It was locked with all of our luggage in it. In front of the hotel. Whole family stuff. Packed. Clothes. Food. Meds. Checked in, turned around and dead. Tesla service said we can tow it and look at it tomorrow for $800. Remembered to look up that there was another way. Had to break in through the frunk trick.
If it helps I’m 2022 model y
> pre-2021 Model Y Almost all 2021 MY's have the 12v. The change was late November iirc.
If money isnt tight (you bought a Tesla I'm assuming it's fine) replace every 2 years and you'll never see a dead one. You can probably get away with 3. I would not personally.
Hang on. Mine just went over 36 months. Are there any symptoms that'll indicate the LV battery may need replacement soon?
36 months ago was early 2023, so yours should be lithium ion and much more robust.
Love it
It’s a 2022 with the lead acid battery according to service mode.
Wait a min. My 12V battery is 6 years old and in the service menu it’s showing “Health -OK”. Should change it still?
I think I bought may 2023. Do you know how often I should replace the low voltage battery?
There is no service interval for your 16volt battery. Replace it when you see warning messages telling you to replace it. It might last the life of the car.
Oh nice thanks! So it won't die randomly without a message beforehand?
Nice. Which one do they sell that would be the right replacement. I’m doing a search and so far not finding the battery outside of Tesla selling it. I appreciate you.
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone helping out. I appreciate it.
It could die on you any day now at that age. I personally would replace it before that happens to avoid being stranded somewhere. Replaced ours at 4 years.
Mine died without warning recently. It was 5 years old. I’d change it as a precaution.
Yes, it was delivered new from the factory in Feb 2023.
They can look it up for you.
Drop by a Tesla service center they’ll fix it for you on the stop
It takes a 51R group size. I wouldn't bother with AGM since replacement is frequent & vibration is low.
Call aaa
Concur with other comments: mine said ok at 5 years old. Next morning it was DOA in the driveway. I jumped it, it came back to life; and THEN “please service 12v”
No and that's the problem. No signs. Just death. Swap it when you can for the peace of mind
Now I'm wondering how long the "lifetime" 16v batteries last in the 2024 models.
The lithium has a much more modern battery management module, like your laptop, that should keep them alive for many more years with way better early warning.
An electric car that needs a jump start. Who designed this? But if you want to avoid damaging 12 volt components in the car, stop at an Autozone and replace the battery.
Just hook up a battery charger to it and charge it overnight
Weird, after four years, Tesla told me to bring it in for a new battery. No warning or anything. I needed a new TPM sensor anyway. Whole thing took 10 minutes.
My March 2021 build died at 3½ years with no warning. I'd look at changing it sooner than later.
Costco probably has it for cheaper if youre near one
Autozone doesn’t sell that particular battery.
Should change every 2-3 years
I also keep a 9v battery in my pocket to open the frunk when traveling. I leave the portable jumper in the frunk.
Same build as you - our car died last weekend on a road trip, no warning at all. It was a Sunday and found a replacement at O’Reilys for $260; easy replacement. I see Tesla sells it for $125. Tesla Roadside estimated $180 to show up. They did confirm remotely that it was a 12v issue. My Rivian gives a warning when the 12v needs replacement. Tesla needs this capability and not being stuck on a roadtrip.
It is listed on their web site as in stock at my local store. SKU Number 1384095 part number 85B24LS-AGM
How many miles? I have a 2022 model Y and it shows healthy. But I also don’t want to wake up to a dead battery on a random morning
Huh, I was under the impression that the 2022 models have the newer 16V lithium battery. Interesting...
You don't have to worry about this with the newer 16V battery, correct?
If you get the car running before replacing the 12V, keep sentry mode activated—it will prevent your car from sleeping and run everything off the high voltage battery until you can replace the 12V.
Worry about opening the Frunk?
Well, more so worrying about the 16V battery dying and not being able to open the frunk if I don't have a 9V battery.
I have a 2020 Model Y LR basically first production still on its original LV battery... 149,000km
Thanks! The interesting thing about my situation was, it actually said “asleep 35 minutes, Sentry On”. When it was unresponsive.
I clicked on the owner manual link in my Tesla app and it says 2020-2024 has a lead acid battery.
