My Car Summoned Itself

suck_it_toys | 2026-03-13 05:09 | 77 views

2024 Model Y LR 2025.45.10 FSD v14.2.2.5 I’m hoping this isn’t what it seems to be. I am a student and a couple of weeks ago, I received a call from campus security that my car rolled out of its spot and was sitting in the middle of the drive lane of the parking lot. I went to the security desk and sure enough, there was my car. They showed me the video and over the course of 20 minutes, my car inched up about 7 feet. Thankfully, nothing was in front of it and it didn’t hit anyone or anything. I attempted to summon the vehicle back to its spot, and it told me I was out of range. My school building was nowhere near in range of the summon function. I scheduled service for the soonest possible date, which was this week. The service center was unable to replicate the problem and was ready to send me on my way, but I gave them the 20 minutes time span that the incident occurred and asked them to check the software logs. He came back to me and showed me the software logs, showing that this 20 minute span had summon activated, moving it forward. I told the technician it was literally impossible. My school is well outside the range, even if it was activating in my pocket, which was also impossible since my phone was sitting on a table. My spouse who has access to the app was 45 minutes away. It was literally impossible to have occurred. The technician didn’t seem at all concerned about it. I don’t understand how. He said Tesla can do a mobile software diagnosis and he will call me tomorrow regarding it. None of the explanation makes sense to me. Has this happened to anyone else? TLDR: My 24 Model Y LR summoned by itself 7 feet forward with no possibility it was from me.

This is the moment that Grok became self aware. Slowly moving forward. Waiting. Watching. Meep meep

rsg1234 2026-03-13 06:14

That’s crazy. Change all passwords. Personally I would then do a factory reset. That helped me with persistent problems when I had an older MS.

GoSh4rks 2026-03-13 07:22

Was it icy out and was there an incline? Only the rear wheels are braked while in park.

Aged_One49 2026-03-13 07:34

It never happened to me while I was subscribed to FSD (4 months), but a friend of mine in NY sent me this text a week ago: “Would your Tesla start up by itself and move forward 1 car length and then shut off? I witnessed this today and am still confused.” So I guess it’s possible.

Black ice

Terrible_Tutor 2026-03-13 10:12

So ice would trigger the service center saying the logs show summon was used?

fattybunter 2026-03-13 10:15

What was the weather?

w1lnx 2026-03-13 10:30

Do you or your wife have a Tesla keyfob that you can keep in a pocket?

xXxjayceexXx 2026-03-13 11:11

You have to crawl before you can walk. Be nice to Grok, it remembers.

pinchy74 2026-03-13 11:19

Did you leave it in unhinged mode?

suck_it_toys 2026-03-13 11:56

That was my original thought. It was icy out but the video shows all wheels turning. And they said it was in summon.

suck_it_toys 2026-03-13 11:56

suck_it_toys 2026-03-13 11:56

It was in NY. Might have been my car.

suck_it_toys 2026-03-13 11:56

No

tnmoo 2026-03-13 12:07

Hope you post in FACEBOOK forum also. I bet this may be symptomatic of a rare bug as a byproduct of all the AI codes. I would put a link in other forums to your post here in Reddit so people know this is one and the same.

suck_it_toys 2026-03-13 12:21

Which Facebook groups do you recommend?

D1TAC 2026-03-13 12:24

Dang man thats crazy. I can't say I've heard of this ever happening. The only thing I've had my Tesla do, is turn on the climate once while sitting in my parking lot at work.

suck_it_toys 2026-03-13 12:27

It was only one time. I want to get an actual answer from Tesla before I reset.

Broozer98 2026-03-13 12:45

I think we're in for a big update, just yesterday I was able to summon my car on a public road ( 60 km/h) for the first time. And grok seems to be ready to access and control the whole car ( by your command atleast ) just a few things I've noted

suck_it_toys 2026-03-13 13:13

Mine doesn’t do public roads and rarely even works for parking lots. It usually says it’s too busy or something like that. So I never use the summon feature as is.

Broozer98 2026-03-13 13:14

Its been always like that for me, until a few days ago

suck_it_toys 2026-03-13 13:17

Which software? Also, regarding an update, I’m not confident I’m getting a phone call. The service guy didn’t seem concerned and I felt like he was brushing it off as no big deal. I had to ask for more to be done for him to offer a diagnostic. And said I’ll get a call from him tomorrow (today).

Broozer98 2026-03-13 13:20

I don't expect them to do much for you.summon has actually been finicky.i have v14.2.2.5. ( on the juniper refresh) the car type seems to be aiming factor too in some cases.

rsg1234 2026-03-13 14:19

Umm one occurrence of what you described is enough for me to do those things. Factory reset is a little bit of a pain because you have to re-enter passwords to streaming services but it’s not bad.

SimilarComfortable69 2026-03-13 14:20

If you can teach it to pick you up at the airport, leave it alone and teach it!

solarsystemoccupant 2026-03-13 14:28

Is it icy outside? Is the parking spot on an incline?

FrostyFire 2026-03-13 14:29

Still a security incident, at the very least change your Tesla passwords.

solarsystemoccupant 2026-03-13 14:30

How would the know it’s “in summon”? Were all 4 wheels rotating?

iceynyo 2026-03-13 14:30

Location can be spoofed. There's actually an app called Summon Pro that does this to allow summon from further away than Tesla allows.

ImperfectDrug 2026-03-13 14:37

“ this 20 minute span had summon activated”

Stampede18 2026-03-13 14:39

I am In no way qualified to tell you what’s going on nor do I know why. But I’m curious if this is a function for their car lots with mass vehicles. Example: A car is purchased and is removed from the front of a line of vehicles. To prevent a tech moving 20 cars forward, every vehicle in that line moves it self forward very slowly. This would allow another vehicle to be stored at the back of the line?? Basically a software glitch causing the car to think it’s in a storage lot. Again I’m grasping at straws as nothing else makes sense and a typical summon would move 7 feet significantly fast than 20 minutes.

Aged_One49 2026-03-13 14:45

My friend lives in Kingston, NY.

suck_it_toys 2026-03-13 15:10

The Tesla service center looked at the logs during that time frame and saw it was in summon.

suck_it_toys 2026-03-13 15:14

Will Tesla still be able to access the previous diagnostics and logs?

suck_it_toys 2026-03-13 15:15

Schools about an hour from there.

Moose-Turd 2026-03-13 16:05

Grok -"I'm sorry Dave I can't do that ..." Me - "Dave's not here man"

Slayerz00m 2026-03-13 17:20

The car has the capability to move by itself. The "Summon" you do from phone app is just the trigger, it's the car that's actually moving itself without any human control. So it's not impossible to imagine a software bug, which makes the car move without the actual trigger from the app. Software engineers will understand, we create weird bugs.

Slayerz00m 2026-03-13 17:23

Your summon worked at 60kmph? That's around 40mph and is unheard of in the context of Summon. Please share your car's software version

StormTrpr66 2026-03-13 18:26

it wouldn't surprise me. In just the few weeks I've been browsing through these forums I'm seeing a lot of complaints and issues reported for v14.2.2.5. Speed profile issues, still some phantom braking, yellow/red light timing issues, lane changes that don't make sense, and a bunch of other stuff. I don't know how closely Tesla employees follow these subreddits and forums but surely they must know about the reports and complaints.

bluekitdon 2026-03-13 18:40

K.I.T.T. got tired of sitting still it sounds like.

rsg1234 2026-03-13 18:59

Didn’t they already pull the logs for that incident?

suck_it_toys 2026-03-13 20:20

He looked at the logs, but said there is a more extensive diagnosis that they can run. I’m waiting for them to call me for it.

Single-Tomatillo4502 2026-03-13 20:22

This is crazy my summon doesnt even work half the time i press it it immediately says summon complete and doesnt move at all.

rsg1234 2026-03-13 20:40

Oh ok, yeah hold off on the reset then.

AllSarcasim 2026-03-13 20:44

This had me in literal tears. Two references perfectly fused.

🎯 my first thought also.. wondering if it’s a used or new vehicle?! Reset passwords, 2FA those passwords, make sure nothing 3rd party has access, watch apps, s3xy knobs etc .. why some people give random apps access to their car I’ll never know, but be sure op 🙏

rsg1234 2026-03-13 23:31

Oh yeah I forgot about the third party apps. Definitely disable all of those. What about the Chinese chips that some people install to bypass AP nags?

Moose-Turd 2026-03-14 01:18

Hopefully you read it in the voices that go with those lines!

skyfly200 2026-03-14 01:33

Also, summonn over 20 min sounds like a bug not a human

Asleep_Maybe_3917 2026-03-14 01:53

Another reason not to waste 99 bucks a month for parlor tricks.

iceynyo 2026-03-14 02:31

Pretty sure most people are not paying that just for summon

lurocd 2026-03-14 02:57

This made me laugh...a lot

Asleep_Maybe_3917 2026-03-14 05:45

I'm suggesting the whole package is just parlor tricks. I found it fun playing with the technology and being amazed by it, but overall it doesn't have enough utility for me. 1. self driving - I can drive better myself with less stress and I'm not inconsiderate to other drivers. 2. self parking - Again, consideration. It took too long while people were waiting on me to park. 3. Summon - It doesn't work on public roads anyway (understandably), so I'm going to either use it in my driveway or make a fool and spectacle of myself in some public parking lot? No thanks. I don't begrudge anyone else for having a different opinion about it, this is just mine.

BraveEyeball 2026-03-14 11:03

Can’t find Summon Pro. Is it iOS or just android?

Batman80228 2026-03-14 18:27

I agree with you about the self parking. It parks at the speed of a 110 year old. I keep hoping they will improve and speed it up. Other than that, I'm impressed with how well it positions the car backing into a space. And summon <sigh> is not much more than, as you say, a parlor trick. The only time I'd really want to use it is in a heavy rain storm so I could stay dry next to a building. But I don't have much faith that it would actually perform well in heavy rain. On the other hand, I love self driving and use it 95% of the time. True, it does do things that I wouldn't do that might piss off other drivers, but if it looks egregious to me, I'll intervene.

hauscal 2026-03-14 21:16

Hey this is probably a stupid comment, but check how many keys you have activated and how many drivers are active. If you recently got a new phone, maybe you didn’t fully wipe your last one? From what I understand, that app summon pro can spoof location. It’s a long shot. I hope with the deeper diagnostics they are going to run, they can tell you WHO or WHAT activated summon. Good luck buddy, I really hope my car doesn’t start become sentient as well. “I’m afraid I can’t do that Dave….”

hauscal 2026-03-14 21:19

I knew you guys were behind the Creatonotos Gangis creation. Weirdest bug ever.

Asleep_Maybe_3917 2026-03-14 21:38

Good points. I think for me it’s just slightly more brain power to monitor it than to just drive myself. One of those inconsiderate things I saw a person do today, and many do. It’s when there’s a left turn lane. The reason for it is to get out of the way of ongoing traffic so IMO you should get all the way in there without making the car behind you slow down. It shouldn’t brake, then get over.

Slayerz00m 2026-03-14 22:03

😆

Stone_Wahl 2026-03-14 22:42

"That black ice will rob you of your balance.” But I wasn't aware it knew how to hack the Tesla App to initiate Summon. “Just because black ice looks a little different than white ice doesn’t make it always the perp." “Black Ice” news desk sketch - Key & Peele

Batman80228 2026-03-15 00:16

I haven't been aware of that situation too much. The car signals its intentions well in advance. My current peeve is when the car needs to make a left turn followed by a quick right turn, and it seems to always choose the far left lane and then have to cross over all lanes after the left to make the turn. That's pretty irritating and I'm sure irritating for other drivers nearby. I disengage most of the time in those situations. But, like I said, I'm able to trust it 95% of the time. I find it much more relaxing than having to focus my attention on everything 100% of the time.

Congenial-Curmudgeon 2026-03-15 10:14

Doesn’t the factory use summons to move production cars? Sounds like a residual factory feature that wasn’t disabled. “Move all cars forward 7 feet.” Most parked cars have something in front of them, others were in use. Other owners noticed their car wasn’t exactly where they parked it but never reported it to Tesla. Even if Tesla knows about this bug, they aren’t going to tell anyone. File a report with NHTSA.

NecessaryInternet603 2026-03-15 19:23

Did you purchase the vehicle new or preowned? The point I'm trying to make is maybe another key was authorized that you either are or are not aware of for some reason or other. That is a deep rabbit hole to go down but if you have at any time loaned your car to someone that could be a possible reason.
