Tesla: please add a "follow them" feature on FSD

tangreentan | 2026-03-13 04:42 | 292 views

I have a 2026 model Y with FSD. I was following a friend to a social function. His car and my car were both full of people. It was about two hours of driving, mostly on the interstate. He had his cruise control (not Tesla) set at 67 mph. My Tesla doesn't have a normal "cruise control", which drives me crazy sometimes. I put it in FSD and the "chill setting" wanted to go 65 mph and the "standard" wanted to go 69 mph (and pass him). This obviously made it impossible to follow my friend in FSD. I would like to be able to click on the image of the car in front of me on the FSD screen and have the option to "follow them" until I tell it to stop. Match their speed and take all the same turns.

You could lower the speed.

goodvibezone 2026-03-13 04:49

Following people on freeways like that would ne dangerous. Just see them when you get there.

Gtstricky 2026-03-13 05:00

Why didn’t you use the scroll wheel to set 67?

tangreentan 2026-03-13 05:09

That doesn't work anymore. The scroll wheel only controls the mode: sloth, chill, standard, hurry, mad max. The car decides a speed based on which mode is selected.

tangreentan 2026-03-13 05:12

What's dangerous about it? The FSD controls following distance anyways. Most other vehicles nowadays have radar controlled cruise control that essentially does the same thing. If I am driving my Toyota with cruise control on and I come up behind a slower moving vehicle, it will reduce my speed and keep at set distance until I change lanes.

tangreentan 2026-03-13 05:12

Not possible on the current version of FSD. You can't manually limit your speed, you can only select the "mode".

Gtstricky 2026-03-13 05:20

Well that’s stupid. They need to bring that option back.

tangreentan 2026-03-13 05:44

I agree, it's very annoying. This car is light years ahead of any similarly priced car as far as technology goes, but doesn't have a way to set max speed on FSD. It used to, but they took that feature away.

drahgon 2026-03-13 06:06

Can't you use tacc

unicornandrainbow_ 2026-03-13 06:10

Keeping a speed behind someone is not the same as "follow them".   What about if he changes lanes? Or suddenly turns? A "follow them" mode would try and do the same hence, dangerous.   On your case, normal autopilot without lane change (idk what the hell is called now, with the name changes) would do exactly what u want. My 2021 Y has it (i dont have FSD).   Edit: is the tacc https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/modely/en_my/GUID-DA920829-F1FA-44F9-8754-6D914C524A79.html

rsg1234 2026-03-13 06:27

I assume you got your car before autosteer was removed. When you are stopped, disable FSD and use AP. It will be perfect for this scenario (freeway, no lane changes).

Still-Magician-7246 2026-03-13 06:35

Exactly what I was going to suggest. Although you don't have to stop the car when going down to autopilot only need to put in park when going up modes towards fsd. At least that's how it is on mine.

fratzba 2026-03-13 06:38

You want old school TACC, which is available on every Tesla.

PullTab 2026-03-13 06:40

I miss the minimize lane changes button.

iguessma 2026-03-13 07:06

On the newer models there is no lane keep.... Stupidest decision they've made.

FuckMyParents420 2026-03-13 07:26

If they implemented this feature, what’s to stop wrongdoers from following lone, vulnerable women back to their apartments? Also, I don’t suppose you could have just entered your mutual destination in your navigation? Unless you were on a joyride or something

Dave_Marsh 2026-03-13 07:26

Or just tell your friends your constraints and let them change their speed setting if you must arrive together.

Educational_Poet_109 2026-03-13 07:40

Wait, I thought there is only chill and standard option available. How do we avail other options? I live in Europe and the model is RWD 2022 with no enhanced autopilot option.

DigitalJEM 2026-03-13 07:47

> OP u/tangreentan : My Tesla doesn’t have a normal “cruise control”……. > u/drahgon : Can’t you use TACC Exactly. You want normal cruise, use TACC > u/iguessma : newer models there is no lane keep Op said they wanted normal cruise. Which is what TACC is.

DigitalJEM 2026-03-13 07:48

I’d love a follow them feature also. It would be quite useful.

LowPomegranate225 2026-03-13 08:04

So these Teslas... You can't drive them yourself at all?

Brad331 2026-03-13 08:05

What's to stop wrongdoers from doing that anyway, FSD or not?

matttopotamus 2026-03-13 08:17

I’m thinking this might have been more useful prior to GPS. Why not just plug in the same destinations, stops and all?

DrSendy 2026-03-13 08:25

That's already available in the Tesla "CIA pack" optional upgrade.

Ok_Contact_5940 2026-03-13 08:38

What is CIA pack?

rsxstock 2026-03-13 09:45

Why couldnt you just navigate to the destination on fsd?

Kekafuch 2026-03-13 09:56

Set up a a second driver profile: one for FSD and one for AP TACC. When ur wanting AutoPilot just switch to that profile.

HerValet 2026-03-13 10:45

FSD should have been in front on Chill and the other car following you. Problem solved.

mehalywally 2026-03-13 11:07

You have fsd. Why do you need to follow him. It's not like you don't know the directions. Is something going to happen if you can't be within 100 ft of the people in the other car?

Ferox_Aeternum 2026-03-13 11:11

You lead with FSD in chill and have your friend follow you. This isn’t rocket surgery.

Blue_Kayak 2026-03-13 11:18

lol 🙄

Blue_Kayak 2026-03-13 11:19

Real Teslas don’t follow - they lead. 😉

cane_stanco 2026-03-13 11:30

There’s nothing worse than the caravaning. I neither want to be the lead nor the follower. See you there…

PghSubie 2026-03-13 11:36

"... Don't have to stop.... Only put in park...." Huh? How does one put the car in Park without being stopped?

Revolutionary-Fan235 2026-03-13 11:38

Same. One time, I followed the wrong car. I realized my mistake when we got to the grocery store parking lot, and they lost me. I could have really terrified an innocent person by following them as long as I did. It would have been easier to navigate to the agreed upon destination.

iguessma 2026-03-13 11:43

what. no. "hey can you follow me because my car doesn't work properly if i follow you" the real answer is you don't need to follow. you know the destination - set it and go.

Enragedocelot 2026-03-13 11:51

That doesn’t exist anymore

rademradem 2026-03-13 12:28

A follow that car feature would be very useful as part of FSD.

NeighborhoodGoat 2026-03-13 12:38

Normal cruise control or TACC will not follow the car in front if it changes lanes. I would love the FSD feature to actually follow. ASF - actual smart follow!

Impiryo 2026-03-13 12:41

Yea, not just for convenience, but efficiency. I hate when my car passes to go 1mph faster, and gives up the drafting benefit.

MangoAtrocity 2026-03-13 12:49

Not without disabling FSD until I put the car in park.

MangoAtrocity 2026-03-13 12:49

That’s probably why he misses it, huh

Enragedocelot 2026-03-13 12:51

Idk how I misread that comment. Forgive me, I just woke up lol

HerValet 2026-03-13 12:51

Of course, you don't *need* to follow, but it can be fun to follow. It has happened to me. I set myself as the lead car.

eatmorbacon 2026-03-13 13:08

Does that work?

ckybam69 2026-03-13 13:11

Why would u want to follow? put the destination in the GPS and let the car get you there. What is the benefit of following...I dont get it.

eatmorbacon 2026-03-13 13:11

Not the OP and certainly not me, as I'm in the camp of " I get there when I get there." Following people drives me nuts. Having said that, some people do like to follow and caravan. It probably doesn't have anything to do with the snarky comment about something happening if they aren't within 100ft.

AngleFun1664 2026-03-13 13:16

It makes sense. You don’t have to stop when going from fsd to autopilot. You DO have to park when going from autopilot to fsd.

Tomstroyer 2026-03-13 13:22

Just get the address and use fsd. Why do you want to follow someone? Just arrive when you arrive. Reddit is making this way too complicated.

Tomstroyer 2026-03-13 13:25

People who use fsd understand setting your speed is pointless when you have the drive modes. The drive modes are your speed. What Tesla fixed was people putting their car in mad Max mode but limiting it to 68 on a 60. This caused the car to drive aggressive until it got to 68. The car would be in spots it didn't have the speed to get out of. Speed profiles fix that issue.

Chaxterium 2026-03-13 13:33

I only have chill, standard, and hurry so maybe it's a software version thing.

DigitalJEM 2026-03-13 13:36

Yes, it does work.

DigitalJEM 2026-03-13 13:37

Not if you have multiple driver profiles with their own setting and switch between them.

Awkward_Meringue7571 2026-03-13 14:09

This sounds like a feature that can be misused by creeps. Big no

rsg1234 2026-03-13 14:15

You can go from FSD to AP but not the other way around doing this.

Hustlean 2026-03-13 14:25

You would have to place a target on their car lol makes me feel like the system has a possibility that it would go rouge.

zyneman 2026-03-13 14:34

Should allow pair by bluetooth two cars, follow them feature is unsafe for obvious reasons

epradox 2026-03-13 14:35

Id settle for minimal lane changes back so it’ll draft anyone in front rather than trying to pass

danceswithsockson 2026-03-13 14:37

I’d love a follow feature. I’ve been saying that since the week I got the car. I always have to follow people through twisty areas and I’d love to just sit back and watch.

nitroused911 2026-03-13 14:42

They could call the follow my friend setting "Convoy"!

StormTrpr66 2026-03-13 15:35

The speed profiles are all wacked out. My usual morning commute is on a freeway with a 65mph speed limit. Traffic flows at 74 or 75 with the occasional outlier, granny doing 55 or maniac blazing by at 90+. Chill mode keeps me at around 67 or 68. Way to slow. Standard mode will not go faster than 72. Still a hair too slow and also tends to get stuck behind slower drivers since it doesn't like to move into any of the left lanes to pass. You'd think Hurry mode is what I should be using but in Hurry mode it will go 80, which is a great way to get pulled over. It's missing the entire range between 72 and 80. A perfect speed would be 74 or 75 with a lane change style between Standard and Hurry. In v13 of FSD I could put it in Standard mode, set max speed at 75, and it was perfect. The new speed profile options and removing the max speed setting did not fix anything, IMO. I understand what you're saying about the car getting stuck in spots it couldn't get out of with an aggressive driving style but without the speed to match, but Tesla has some very creative people working there. Surely they could figure out a way to provide a little more control over speed. Again, my speed profile settings on a 65mph freeway give me a choice of going either 68, 72, or 80. Need something between 72 and 80. And don't get me started on Mad Max. That profile is going to land someone in jail. It's nice to have but it tried to take me on a freeway offramp with a speed limit of 50mph at 80mph.

StormTrpr66 2026-03-13 15:38

Can't someone do that without something like FSD?

supboy1 2026-03-13 15:39

It’s a feature that’s literally in every single recent car from other car manufacturers other than Tesla. ??

Tasty_Action5073 2026-03-13 16:00

This feature is amazing for cops, so they can market it to police departments and sell more Teslas there too!

too_oh_ate 2026-03-13 16:06

This a completely unnecessary feature. You don't need to follow someone. You have a destination inputted.

dkpnw 2026-03-13 16:11

idk why you're getting downvoted, because this is true.

dkpnw 2026-03-13 16:11

it always seemed like a placebo to me, anyway. More frustrating to have it change lanes in that mode than not have that mode at all lol

FuckMyParents420 2026-03-13 16:19

Absolutely, no doubt. The difference is limiting ease to it. Raising the barrier to entry deters many nefarious actions. It's why civilians aren't often allowed access to fully automatic weapons. Not that this is analogy is tantamount, but I'm just saying the ends don't always justify the means.

Archelon_ischyros 2026-03-13 16:29

Stalker mode.

Kekafuch 2026-03-13 16:35

Set up a second new driver profile for yourself. Same seat , mirror, and steering wheel settings. The only difference is having the new profile set up for Autopilot/Cruise Control instead of FSD. This way, you can change to either engagement on the fly without going into park or user agreement. This was a life saver when doing a long long road trip.

Sufficient_Water_326 2026-03-13 16:45

Stalkers will love it

krautchinktiger 2026-03-13 16:48

Reminds me of when I was in high school and a bunch of us were following each other on local streets. One guy saw a yellow and gunned it, so did the guy behind him, then the first guy changed his mind and hit the brakes and the second guy rear ended him. I’m sure Tesla will be more intelligent than the average high school driver, but there are definitely some fun edge cases that will come out from something like this.

Educational_Poet_109 2026-03-13 17:03

I think that's because yours might be AWD and mine is just RWD.

Chaxterium 2026-03-13 17:03

Ah. That could be. Mine is AWD.

DigitalJEM 2026-03-13 18:02

Because a lot of people on Reddit don’t make any sense. LOL

TxTransplant72 2026-03-13 18:02

Lane keeping is pretty good these days. Just did a 5 hour out & 5 hour return I’m on the interstate and the auto steer did 99 % of the drive, including curves.

eatmorbacon 2026-03-13 18:02

Thanks, TIL. I haven;t had the need for it yet. But nice knowing for sure.

dkpnw 2026-03-13 18:06

lol true that

rsg1234 2026-03-13 18:58

I tried this and it would glitch out going back to the FSD profile. With the newer version of FSD I no longer feel the need to change it back to AP though.

gmatocha 2026-03-13 19:37

It will be the "Follow that car!" Feature, with Hot Pursuit and PI modes. And while we're at it can we add Getaway with Baby Driver and French Connection modes?

Open_Intern_643 2026-03-13 19:45

Cool idea actually, but seems like it wouldn’t be trivial to implement

skyfly200 2026-03-13 22:40

Hard disagree. It really made it a lot more smart feeling. I miss that button to.

goodvibezone 2026-03-13 22:42

I'm not talking about how it currently works. As [unicornandrainbow\_](https://www.reddit.com/user/unicornandrainbow_/) said, OP was talking about wanting a button where it literally 'follows' another car. So car A moves into fast lane, car B also does. That makes zero sense to me. Putting both cars on FSD (as would be the current design) is the right answer.

darxist7 2026-03-14 01:05

Wtf I was just thinking about this earlier. A caravan feature would be great

quetiapinenapper 2026-03-14 03:42

Yeah folks just make driver profiles. You can have FSD on one autopilot on the other. Less hassle. With the new FSD I wouldn’t bother myself though.

CovidScurred 2026-03-14 06:18

Why do you need to ask a stupid question? Some people like following each other to the destination, duh

LaunchGap 2026-03-14 06:41

This used to work on my 2024 MY when I used the trial FSD but it stopped working when the last FSD trial was released.

Still-Magician-7246 2026-03-14 07:20

If going to autopilot you don't need to stop if you were in fsd. If you are going from autopilot to fsd you need to stop and put in park. Or as I learned from others posting you can change driver profiles and never put into park.

tangreentan 2026-03-14 09:08

Usually the other car is not a Tesla. So they can't both be on FSD. if you've used FSD, you know that it's pretty smart. A "follow" function would not make unsafe or unnecessary lane changes. It would analyze all of the traffic around it and decide what is needed in order to follow the vehicle. The "follow" would be low priority and safety would be high priority. There would be cases where the vehicle in back would lose track of the vehicle in front in heavy traffic, and that's fine. It would notify you on the screen that it lost track of the car in front and the human would have to tell it to re-follow the car in front when it was found again.

bubble_baby_8 2026-03-14 17:23

Haha, im here to agree with you. It ALWAYS changed lanes when I put minimal lane changes on. Apparently computers are not okay with just cruising on the right.

bubble_baby_8 2026-03-14 17:24

Ngl I just read the title and my mind immediately went “damn bro, road rage is one thing but wishing to command the self driving to do it for you is another level of nuts” hahah.

Stone_Wahl 2026-03-14 22:12

Have your buddy be the follow vehicle and you let FSD do all the work.... problem solved. Only one of you has to be bothered by driving a vehicle rather than both of you.

thewittman 2026-03-15 00:00

Wouldn't that be ap? Or whatever it's called now. I use mine all the time just like your wishing for. Except I have the nag. But I think you can do the same thing without the nag.

schizzy__ 2026-03-15 09:53

Because they wouldn’t get there at the same time potentially

ohmslaw7474 2026-03-16 04:52

Brilliant idea
