A starburst crack on my Model Y roof.

d1863 | 2026-03-13 02:49 | 5 views

I found a small crack today on my Tesla glass roof. Safelite doesn't repair these, and Tesla's replacement cost is $1600. Since the crack is so small, it's barely bigger than a dime, I'm thinking of trying to DIY it.

I would 1000% try to use one of those repair kits or have it repaired professionally before it spreads.

Impact damage. You might be able to fill it and stop it spreading with a windshield repair kit. Certainly small enough to work. Search for "rainx windshield repair kit" ([manufacturer's site](https://www.rainx.com/product/rain-x-windshield-repair-kit/)) for some possible solutions.

Why wouldn't Safelite and the likes repair it? Glass is glass -right? Just wondering what might be their logic for saying no 🙂‍↔️ Anyhow they don't warranty their glass fix, other than saying if it breaks and you buy the replacement from us, we will give you a discount. In my mind, it gives them an incentive to do a poor job or shatter the glass in the process of fixing it, but I digress. Professional fix should be #1 at choice, otherwise those diy kits.

here I am wondering how a starburst candy cracked your roof...

If you call around you'll probably find very few glass places that will replace Tesla glass however most of them do repair and don't care what glass it is. Generally this will be in the $40-$50 range, just call any place that does windshields and if they tell you they don't do repairs ask them if they know one that does. I support the at home kits, I've used them quite a bit since getting a Tesla however there are relatively cheap professional options beyond Safelite.

Well, with Tesla, it's the location of the damage. Outside the black border would have been repairable. And Safelite didn't give me an examination for why they don't do repairs.

Definitely a pro job. While the DIY kits will seal it, it will still be very visible. The pros should have a stronger vacuum resulting in more fluid filling the crack. You only get one shot at fixing this.

Yeah, I’ve done several repairs myself and the pros can make them look better.

I had a crack like this filled professionally. Tesla refused to do it, so did satellite. It’s been 10 months and no problems.

Have a pro seal it for under $100. Had something similar on my model 3 front windshield and it lasted for 7+ years until the car got totaled.

Wife is scheduled for glass replacement today. That will almost certainly grow if it take care of now. Estimate is $1550.

Have you felt how hard those things can be? You can practically break your teeth on some of them.

SnooKiwis6943 2026-03-14 14:15

I'm more concerned about how this happened? You're going to need to do your best to prevent it in the future.

BreakerSoultaker 2026-03-14 14:38

You clearly aren't on Tesla subs. This happens all the time, usually along the front few inches of the roof glass. It's from stones kicked up on the highway and not a lot you can do to prevent it.

SnooKiwis6943 2026-03-14 20:59

I'm not on all Tesla subs, but I am sometimes on this one. Such a shame that insurance wont touch this. Would be cool to see someone make a glue on deflector that attaches to the top of the windshield to protect the roof glass.

laceyboy8054 2026-03-15 07:49

Simple, they just want more money from you/insurance.

BreakerSoultaker 2026-03-15 19:24

To be clear roof damage would be covered under comprehensive coverage, it's just not covered under windshield coverage. Tesla and Safelite won't repair Tesla roofs so your choices are repair it yourself with a kit or wait for the crack to spread and repair it under a comp claim.

Find an independent auto glass shop and ask them to fill it. Should be like $50. Easy peasy done. Don’t waste your time with corporate goons like Safelite.
