Tesla Model Y Standard now qualifies for the $5,000 EVAP Incentive

DevinOlsen | 2026-03-13 01:37 | 23 views

In Canada the standard is now $44,990 with the EVAP incentive. I’m not sure I would recommend someone spend $20,000 extra for what the premium offers. What do you all think?

Not on the list yet: https://tc.canada.ca/en/road-transportation/innovative-technologies/zero-emission-vehicles/electric-vehicle-affordability-program-evap/evap-vehicle-list I would wait. I would love to buy at this level.

Living-Ad9535 2026-03-13 01:41

Yeah I’m with you. Twenty grand is a *huge* gap for a bit more range, slightly better 0 to 100, and some nicer interior touches that most people forget about after a month. If the SR fits your driving habits and climate, I’d pocket the 20k and throw a tiny bit of that at winter tires or a home charger setup instead.

Fun-Alternative-8758 2026-03-13 01:43

Yeah I’m with you. For most people that extra 20k is basically nicer seats, a bit more range and some bells and whistles you stop noticing after a month. If you’re road tripping a ton or really care about the acceleration, sure, maybe. But value for money, the standard at that price in Canada is kinda a no brainer right now.

c4koth 2026-03-13 01:53

I don’t think the $20k price difference is speaking to the same buyer. If my budget is $65k, I’m not cross shopping a $45k variant that lacks all the features I like in the Premium. If my budget is $45k, I’m not cross shopping the $65k version because it’s outside of my budget.

DevinOlsen 2026-03-13 02:36

I mean you’d have to be a pretty ignorant shopper to not look at the other trims while shopping. Sure you COULD spend 65k on premium but truly why would you? The benefits of the premium I don’t think are worth 20k.

MattNis11 2026-03-13 03:05

The 0-60 difference is a lot as a percentage

JCLAPP01 2026-03-13 03:43

Yeah Tesla has two things going for it on the outside, driving itself and it’s 0-60. I got a premium model y 2021 but the performance is something I truly wish I got. It’s such a fun vehicle to drive as a premium I could only imagine a performance trim absolutely slaying anything else on the road. Although the premium is still quick as hell. Looking to get the acceleration boost or boost 50 here soon.

dancinhmr 2026-03-13 03:58

Ehhhh? Is the diff between low and mid tier rear vs all wheel drive? Because for me, this is a no brainer for Canadian driving

Kimorin 2026-03-13 04:18

No power rear seats, no rear heated seats, no ventilated seats, less speakers, no rear touchscreen, no waterproof frunk, rear wheel drive, less range, no HEPA air filter or biodefense mode, no leather seats, covered glass roof, different center console, no power steering wheel adjustment, manual rear vents, manual side rear view mirrors

c4koth 2026-03-13 04:21

As a Premium owner, there is no way I would even consider a Standard, even at a $20k price reduction. Standard looks and feels too cheap. Give me the nicer everything that the Premium has.

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-03-13 04:40

You do NOT stop noticing premium audio in a month. Assuming better quality accessories and better range are forgotten in a month is something people tell themselves to feel better about their low-end choice.

DevinOlsen 2026-03-13 05:29

Have you actually driven the standard? It’s really not that “cheap” feeling inside

AltairEzi0 2026-03-13 05:50

I think Tesla should lower the price of premium model by around 7-8K CAD for it to feel like worthy upgrade. I was planning on getting a MYLR but now the price difference is too much, almost 50% extra. Going to play the waiting game now.

iguessma 2026-03-13 09:06

people use this as a comparison... but honestly even the base has MORE than enough passing power. i basically ride on chill mode all the time because you just don't need what it can provide otherwise unless you're flooring it at every light.

iguessma 2026-03-13 09:08

1000% agree with you lol these people are just bad with money and can be easily influenced to spend more of it.

no_baseball1919 2026-03-13 09:53

Yup agreed, at 52k after taxes it's hard to justify going up to the 72k after taxes. MY Premium should come down to 58-59k before tax.

dancinhmr 2026-03-13 10:50

Yeah it is still the lack of AWD that is a deal breaker for me. 🤷‍♂️

c4koth 2026-03-13 11:18

It all depends on one’s perspective. If I was going from a 2002 Chevy Cavalier to a Model Y Standard, I would love it and feel like I’ve really moved up in the world. To step down from a Premium to a Standard would feel like driving a rental car.

WhaleDonation7 2026-03-13 12:25

This is insane price, finally Canada gets a rare W

LeadingAd6025 2026-03-13 12:33

Please put CAD to avoid misinformation & confusion. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Adventurous_Sky2465 2026-03-13 13:19

My Tesla Rep confirmed its good to go

Adventurous_Sky2465 2026-03-13 13:21

More like 76k tax on for premium... About a 23k gap after tax

no_baseball1919 2026-03-13 13:23

Yeah very true. I was just calculating mine with my trade in tax lol

JIsADev 2026-03-13 16:46

I believe suspension is different, and standard doesn't have a glass roof. Not sure if that's worth the extra for you

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-03-13 16:54

Another false assumption. The faster response is definitely useful at highway on-ramps/merging. It is also useful when speeding forward to get out of the blind spot of other drivers too lazy to look over their shoulders to see you as they merge into your lane. The sooner you're in their peripheral vision, the better. Or when a semi driver can't see you, and you need to get ahead of them merging into you. That on-demand, zip forward can be quite useful.

iguessma 2026-03-13 17:03

Sorry man it's just not going to happen. The car has more than enough power There's literally zero reason to ever take it out of chill mode And you know what you don't have to speed up to get out of a hazard the situation a lot of the times you can also slow down but a lot of people here do not recognize this Go to weeks on chill mode and the only way you'll ever go back is if you're stubborn

BasicBelch 2026-03-13 17:03

premium audio is already ass

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-03-13 17:13

You do NOT get premium audio in the standard. Premium audio is NOT something you don't care about after a month. If you don't see the value in it, speak for yourself. You have no clue how many people who have it DON'T do as you claim, and forget about it after a month. Maybe you worded your comment to mean something other than what I'm responding to.

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-03-13 17:16

You should speak for yourself. "There's zero reason YOU ever want/need to take it out of chill mode." You don't know what situation other drivers are in. Especially those in police departments that use Teslas. SPEAK FOR YOURSELF.

iguessma 2026-03-13 17:42

Ignorance is bliss huh I'm not saying there's no situation where speeding up might be the best solution but there are a lot of situations where slowing down is also the solution But unless you take my recommendation and drive until for a few weeks this conversation is over

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-03-13 18:07

I've used chill mode. I still draw a different conclusion. So, even if I have, this convo can still be over. No one EVER said slowing down or stopping aren't the right choice in other situations. It goes without saying. Newsflash: Those are still options when you're not in chill mode. Rotfl My response is to the initial blanket statement that no one would need to be out of chill for any reason. It's a blanket comment stated as fact. It's just as ridiculous as someone in a gas-up saying EVs are a ridiculous decision because no one ever needs the accelerator to respond so quickly (without the lag inherent with gas engine acceleration) They should speak for themselves.

MattNis11 2026-03-13 18:27

The problem is that if you do need the passing power even one time in the future, you will not have it with CHILL mode. Tesla product and developers are plain terrible. Chill mode should still allow full power when flooring it. They should just accelerator mapping to a more progressive mode where it has less response through half of the pedal travel but progressively gives more power as you press it past halfway.

iguessma 2026-03-13 18:36

> No one EVER said slowing down or stopping aren't the right choice in other situations. It goes without saying. Newsflash: Those are still options when you're not in chill mode. Rotfl Pretty ironic because I never said you could only do it in chill mode the fact is you don't need the acceleration so you can laugh all you want but you're just laughing at yourself I get it you guys like to drive fast you do you man keep living in your own ignorance

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-03-13 19:03

YOU began by stating that you ride in chill all the time because "you (general you) just don't need what it (more power) provides..." I shared scenarios, including those of police departments who utilize MY, that disproved your blanket statement. You acquiesce and share that you didn't mean there aren't scenarios where quick acceleration isn't of use. Which, btw, NEGATES your initial comment. That should've been the end of the debate. But, nooooo... You couldn't stand it. Your ego got the better of you wanting to ge right. Now you're switching to the false accusation that we all just want to speed. Learn how to say "yes...I overlooked other considerations in my initial comment." And MOVE TF on.

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-03-13 19:30

But, according to definition of chill, THAT which you suggest they ought program, wouldn't be "chill". Chill is laid back/CALM. Not sometimes calm, sometimes fast. And if you have a teen driver at home, it helps to lock them into "chill" with zero possibility of accelerating at speeds beyond their experience.

MattNis11 2026-03-13 19:31

Yes it would.

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-03-13 19:39

Right. I can just hear it now. Parent: We had our car locked in chill mode for our 17 year old to drive. We didn't know they could still punch the accelerator and race their friends. You see how stupid it would be for "chill" to mean only when you feel like it? So F-ing stupid.

Knaj910 2026-03-13 21:02

When I bought my 2023 MY the audio quality was a standout feature. I did not like how even the "premium" sound package was in the Ioniq 5 and EV 6. But in a case like this I wouldn't spend 14.5k USD for it.

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-03-13 21:12

Tesla's premium audio isn't $14.5k USD. READ: Tesla's Premium Audio system is included at no extra cost in Long Range and Performance models of the Model 3/Y, providing a 17-speaker setup with dual subwoofers. It is not available as a factory option on Base (RWD) models, where users must rely on aftermarket upgrades (approx. $800–$3,000) for better sound.  YouTube +2

Knaj910 2026-03-13 22:01

And to go to from the RWD to the AWD Long Range it would cost 14.5K USD in OPs case. I'm not saying standalone it's that expensive, but to get it optioned from Tesla you have to spend more and upgrade the rest of the car.

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-03-13 22:37

I understand that. It's the same with most cars. It's a stupid argument. The OP's premise is a ridiculous comparison based on the factor of vehicle acceleration. As if chill should be everyone's go-to because they love it so much. And that anything faster-than is unnecessary. As you noted, there's more than one consideration that's made for customers who spend a premium price. It's worth it to them for their reasons and/or needs. Driving an AWD MY in snow is a better option than the RWD version. If that's required to get you to a job that nets you more than $14.5k, it pays for itself, so to speak.
