If you want your side windows defrosted too, it works best to aim the "face" vents at them and run air on both defrost and face.

Double tap it to where it shows up red instead of blue

Ok_Swordfish_2462 2026-03-12 20:16

Click once (blue) for Defog, click a second time (red) for defrost - note that it is designed to clear the windshield from the manual: 1. The windshield defroster distributes air flow to the windshield. Touch once to *defog* the windshield (the icon turns blue). Touch a second time to *defrost* the windshield. Touch a third time to turn off and restore the air distribution, heating, and fan to their previous settings.

This is the correct answer. Touch once and it’s blue and just blows ambient cabin air. Touch a second time and it’s red and blows hot air to defrost and it will defog much faster. Hot air can hold much more moisture so it evaporates the water off your windows much faster than ambient air.

So yes, it does tend to suck even if you use it correctly in “red” mode (click the blue one to run it red to apply heat). But the advantage of the Tesla is that you do this preemptively. That was my mistake when I first needed to use it, was sitting for a little while as it finally defrosted. It’s slow, but you should turn it on before you get to the car.

Aerican1234 2026-03-12 20:29

Agreed! I have never seen or heard of a car doing this horrible of a job with defogging. This winter I went for 70 miles doing 75mph on a highway completely trusting the autopilot because I couldn’t make sense of the interface and no settings worked. And that was after I read the manual. No, I am not setting my interior to 69 degrees during the winter, Tesla. Even the side view mirrors fogged up somehow. Complete fail on their part, terrible UI.

Defroster crack my windshield 😂😂 And I’m not alone… Tesla quoted me $1.5K to replace…

teepee107 2026-03-12 20:34

Mine works great better than my previous odyssey

lunettenoir 2026-03-12 20:38

Ya you’re doing something wrong. You show the side windows but defrosting is technically for windshield and rear glass. If you want to defog front windows you have to aim the ac vents towards them by manually adjusting their positioning through the HVAC screen. Or just open and close the windows a few times for a quick but temporary fix.

boih_stk 2026-03-12 20:40

How?? How cold does it get where you live?

deztructo 2026-03-12 20:42

>DEFROSTER SUCKS .... Am i doing something wrong YOUR BRAIN SUCKS. 2nd picture tells you what you did wrong. I'm sure this isn't your 1st car. This is just the OP being overdramatic to draw attention.

ChickenFlyLice 2026-03-12 20:45

It helps if you use Hot instead of Cold

schizzy__ 2026-03-12 20:47

I couldn’t agree less. For one, just push the right scroll button (or mic button) and tell your car to turn on the defrost. Simple. Or just push the defrost button twice like it says in the manual. It’s imperative to know how to use the basic controls of your vehicle prior to driving. Especially on the interstate.

Personal_Code_9342 2026-03-12 20:48

yeah my rear defroster I swear doesn’t work.

Chiryou 2026-03-12 20:49

Air circulation will do you wonders

justchevyt 2026-03-12 20:49

You may need to get your hvac checked. Might have a leak somewhere with your refrigerant.

Melbit_ 2026-03-12 20:50

When the glass is extremely cold and covered in snow/ice, blasting hot air on the inside creates a steep temperature gradient, which can cause the windshield to expand unevenly and crack (a stress or pressure crack). Other folks have had the same issue..

CautiousPhysics2840 2026-03-12 21:00

Thanks! I just never had this problem with my past cars.

fgarc016 2026-03-12 21:00

This happens in the cold if you set your AC to recirculate. Turn that off and your side windows should stop fogging up. Those other ones only affect the front or back windshields.

boih_stk 2026-03-12 21:01

I'm in Montreal, Quebec, and it reaches even lower than -22°F here in the winter, and I'll blast the defrost for 30+ minutes before I even get to my car, no issues. The car's toasty, the snow and ice is melted off, and I haven't even thought of this to be a problem. That's why I asked how cold it gets where you live, plus I got a Texas built model Y, so I know it's not about it being a customized glass for our northern weather.

All other cars I've had have a small vent facing the front windows that sends air to them when the front defrost is blowing. It's just a small duct on that system. I *think* the 3 & Y do too, but it's sends wayyyy too little air to be effective. Another "California thinking moment" for Tesla.

unicornandrainbow_ 2026-03-12 21:11

You can just change the vents orientation to blow to the sides and it does the same job.

iluvmacs408 2026-03-12 21:12

...did you just reply to my comment with my own suggestion at the top of this reply thread?

unicornandrainbow_ 2026-03-12 21:14

Yes, as you mentioned that and then mentioned the side vents the other cars has aftewards :) , using your info for yourself.

CautiousPhysics2840 2026-03-12 23:29

Yeah thats what i thought 👍🏼
