Model Y 2023 RWD Seat comfort

Sea_Butterscotch_251 | 2026-03-12 13:26 | 21 views

I bought a Model y RWD Registered Dec 2023 Shanghai built online which was delivered 3 days ago. It was a replacement for the exact same car which developed a fault during the first 14 days of ownership & was returned. Both similar mileage at 25k miles. The car I returned was fine comfort wise - the new one I am getting right side back pain caused by the right bolster. I have tried adjusting the seat without joy. This is a picture of the bolster on the right side which shows wear. Has anyone found seat differences between different Model Y’s of this version. Thinking of sending it back & just getting one locally instead I can sit in first to test. Appreciate this is an issue with buying online that you don’t see it first but there is the 14 day return window we get under re Consumer Credit Act in the UK. 🇬🇧

maybe the problem is your body type? are you obese?

Most bolsters are going to look like that not because of the way you sit but because of how you get in and out of the car. So mild creasing is likely going to be normal after a certain number of miles. For example our car has roughly the same mileage on it and the driver side bolster basically looks like that. As for the seats we have a 2024 and I find the seat comfort to be great even on long drives. This is a very personal thing though as people fit in some seats well and not in others. We had a 2018 Model 3 before, I have sat in other Ys including the newest one, and I didn't feel much difference in the seat comfort.

Will be a factor - I’m 6ft 6in 100kg and I have had a herniated disc in the past which meant I had to sell my BMW 330ci and get an Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV which has been fine for the past 6 years but wanted a change & Model Y is one of the few cars I can fit in with someone behind me having enough room.

how is the bolster affecting your back? The purpose of the bolster is to keep snug in your seat during lateral g-forces when you turn hard. It shouldn't be making much contact with you during normal driving. Maybe you are exceptionally wide-bodied? Even then, I can't imagine what it would do. That bolster still looks functional.

Ok thanks for that info - I assumed it was due to someone sitting on the bolster wearing down the foam. Good to know you didn’t find much difference sitting in other Model Y’s

I’m assuming it’s the bolster but it possibly isn’t then - I’m definitely not wide bodied - though middle age spread has affected me 😆

I don’t remember reading of any substantive seat changes in the middle of the production of the pre-juniper y, at least not when they were in full swing like in 2023. As others have said, the bolster looks like that because of the way one exits the car. I suspect you haven’t replicated your perfect combination of seat adjustments and it’s causing you discomfort. Also, the two seats have likely worn differently based on whoever drove the cars for the first 25k

Yes I thought that could be a factor different wear based on the individual. The passenger seat is fine when I sit in that - it’s the drivers seat I find causes discomfort

family member of mine with wide hips hates my Y cuz of the bolsters. For me its so comfy.

p3n9uins 2026-03-12 13:48

I believe it—the passenger seat is going to nearly universally have less wear than the driver’s seat

Sea_Butterscotch_251 2026-03-12 13:49

Interesting - I have wide hips - that could be a factor

In my 2022 Model 3 the seat bolsters caused quite a bit of hip pain for me. I ended up removing foam from both sides and it is way more comfortable for me now. Kinda a pain to do though, I ended up completely removing the seat from the vehicle to do it.

If you are willing to pay, tesla might be able to swap seats for you (between passenger and driver) or even put a new one in. There are also aftermarket seat cover that you can put on top of seat, not sure how much it will help though. If you can convince tesla there's something wrong with the seat, where it hurts everyone, then they can put a new one in for free.

My 2024 Y looks worse than this. My drivers seat moved slightly when I bought it new. I had service “fix” it. They supposedly changed the frame. It continued to move and then the car no longer registered anyone in the seat. 2nd trip to service the “fixed” it by replacing the sensor and now my seat looks like yours with the cover detached from the bolster with additional scratches all over plastic pieces. The seat still moves… lesson learned… don’t let service touch your seat! I asked if they would fix the bolster and they said it was usual wear and tear….😐

Get AWD.. it's better and much funner to own, better speakers, handling, acceleration and better seats. Preferably a premium, a 25 performance wouldn't be bad either

JIsADev 2026-03-12 23:10

Oh I hate it for long drives...

Don't let people fool you into thinking that the state of that seat is your fault. It's a quality control/design issue. My Tesla seat looks exactly the same on both sides of the seat and I can guarantee you that the side of the seat closest to the center console and furthest from the door is not impacted by how I get in and out of the car. I have a 20+ year old SUV with bolstering in better condition and I have been getting in and out of that car for well over 15 years.

>20+ year old SUV with bolstering in better condition and I have been getting in and out of that car for well over 15 years. I agree with you. The seats in my 12 year old Jag still look and feel they're in good condition, zero issues with the bolster. My 2023 MY has the exact same issues as OP. Fwiw I bought the Y pre owned and I don't have a big butt.
