What adapter do I need?

healimon | 2026-03-11 20:57 | 20 views

Last year I made my first road trip in my MY to visit my parents in Massachusetts. I expected there to be places to charge my Tesla natively all over the place. I was wrong. The only charger near their has had this connector (see photo) and we couldn't charge their and I drove 20 minutes to supercharger in Lexington. This year I want to charge at the place down the street. What do I need to buy, how much does it cost? We our going there this weekend and need one fast.

Won't get it by the weekend though. You can pay double for one through Tesla and they may have some at the Service Centre.

theMyceliumFixedIt 2026-03-11 21:01

I bought this one (link below) for those instances where there are no superchargers during road trips. Works great, costs about $80 (on sale from when I bought it for$100) https://a.co/d/05u05F15 And it's on Amazon so you can get it pretty fast.

Lanky-Friendship1948 2026-03-11 21:02

what sorcery is this?

wtfredditacct 2026-03-11 21:03

Your car should have come with an NACS adapter. They also sell CCS1 to NACS all over the place if you don't want to shell out for the Tesla branded one. Just saw you need it this weekend... probably look on Amazon and cross your fingers

healimon 2026-03-11 21:06

I assumed that the adapter that came with the car would work with the next most common charger type. It most certainly did not. The adapter that came with it looks like it would work with the top half of the charger but obviously doesn't fit this monstrosity.

healimon 2026-03-11 21:10

Thank you. Just ordered. Arriving tomorrow. You saved me at least 20 minutes driving to the next town to charge or researching WTH I needed.

rademradem 2026-03-11 21:12

There are 4 common EV charging adapters. The adapters switch between NACS level 1/2 and J1772 (2 adapters one for each direction) and between NACS DC fast charging and CCS1 (2 adapters one for each direction). If you have a Tesla you need the adapters that go from J1772 to NACS and from CCS1 to NACS.

dapi331 2026-03-11 21:13

What year is your Tesla? Older ones won’t be able to use that (even with an adapter) without a hardware retrofit for CCS compatibility.

healimon 2026-03-11 21:15

My thoughts exactly. In what world is this the best solution?

healimon 2026-03-11 21:16

Thanks for the heads up. 2026 Hopefully it works.

SP3NGL3R 2026-03-11 21:16

That's just j1772 or whatever. CCS is the bulky thing you're holding. J1772 was the other common household level 1 while CCS was its fast charger older sibling. And that's what the car-side had. It is basically a physical difference between the charging speeds, and maybe an "over time" upgraded design from a car having just j1772, like J1772++.

SP3NGL3R 2026-03-11 21:18

Hit up a local buy-sell (Facebook or something) and see if someone close has a CCS-NACS adapter you can just grab in a few minutes. Better yet have them come meet you and ensure it works. If I were the seller I'd happily take 15 minutes to help you out. OR. Amazon it, I bet there's an overnight BUT here's the big tip, get it delivered to your parents address.

deztructo 2026-03-11 21:20

Oh no. For most people do not buy high power items on Amazon. You want a CCS to NACS adapter. Check your throughout your car. My 26 Juniper came with the mobile charger and CCS to NACS adapter.

John-Miami 2026-03-11 21:23

Make sure your car shows Enabled for "CCS adapter" or "CCS and 3rd-party NACS DC charging" in the "Additional vehicle information" section on your display.

theMyceliumFixedIt 2026-03-11 21:41

I tend to agree, to at least be cautious when buying high power anything on Amazon. I was in OP's shoes last year. I did lots of research and opted for that highly rated, highly reviewed product from a company that exists and sells outside of Amazon. The perk of having fast shipping while getting a reputable product can be found on Amazon, just takes a bit more digging and cross checking.

SuccessfulParsley946 2026-03-11 21:42

A big one

dapi331 2026-03-11 21:45

Definitely

Lenn1986 2026-03-11 21:55

Me, a European, confused why you cannot use the standard charger that all cars use.

abgtw 2026-03-11 22:14

A vastly inferior CCS1 DC Fast Charging connector. Basically 2 years ago everyone but Tesla used that connector. There is a reason the manufacturers are moving to NACS!

abgtw 2026-03-11 22:15

2021 and newer all support CCS.

abgtw 2026-03-11 22:19

You strange Europeans and your CCS2! Once the US converts over to NACS for everything it will be an even better experience... down the road! Lots of different DC Fast Charge connectors exist actually: [https://www.akyga.com/default/images/how-to-charge-chinese-electric-cars-in-europe/fot1%20types%20of%20plugs%20for%20charging%20electric%20cars.jpg](https://www.akyga.com/default/images/how-to-charge-chinese-electric-cars-in-europe/fot1%20types%20of%20plugs%20for%20charging%20electric%20cars.jpg)

abgtw 2026-03-11 22:20

Most people either go with the official Tesla adapter/A2Z as a backup or use the cheapest one on Amazon. 500A DC is pretty scary if something does go wrong however! These adapters are really simple actually, with just some very basic protections - basically just a temp sensor on the DC pins with some circuitry that tell the charging to stop if high temp is detected: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxmAziLZDH8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxmAziLZDH8)

noford150b 2026-03-11 22:42

Yes, because the metric system saved us! /s

the-supreme-mugwump 2026-03-11 23:41

Charger in OP pic looks like a usb type B connector and NACS is usb c

Jayman_007 2026-03-12 00:05

These are all over Amazon and can be had in 1-2 days.... Example $70: https://a.co/d/0f2WUGH7

Groovyguy 2026-03-12 00:06

How old are we talking about? I have a 2023.

ajwillys 2026-03-12 00:16

I got that adapter 3 years ago when I bought my car. Haven't used it one time. Maybe I should sell it.

dapi331 2026-03-12 00:31

2021+ are safe. 2020 depends. Pre 2020 need retrofit

uyuyuiyuyui 2026-03-12 00:34

My 2026 came with the adapter. Check your trunk.

PsychologicalGoal927 2026-03-12 00:36

Check your trunk, Tesla should have given you one

Inside-Bet6499 2026-03-12 01:15

Actually, all 2020 model Ys are fine. There was a period in 2021/2022 where they had supply chain issues from the pandemic and dropped CCS support.

lionheart4life 2026-03-12 02:51

You are probably not going to need it unless you take road trips where you may not have access to Tesla superchargers, or want to have the option to use a different brand. I feel like mostly every non- Tesla charger is J1722 for level 2.

ajwillys 2026-03-12 02:52

Yep, I take tons of trips all the time. In 3 years, I have close to 60k miles on it. I definitely don't think I'll need it.

OwMyDragonBallz 2026-03-12 05:46

Mine didn't for this plug. It did for the other

Sure_Analysis3438 2026-03-12 07:40

Yes I was also really confused 😂😂 But it’s good the Europe has decided quite fast for just one standard :)

WorksWithWoodWell 2026-03-12 13:31

Tesla just includes the J1172 AC charging adapter, it, sadly, doesn't include the CCS1 DC Fast Charging converter.

uyuyuiyuyui 2026-03-12 14:15

Mine was included, and appears that others too. https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/s/EQHGfbKZyY

rongz765 2026-03-12 14:19

I use Tesla mobile connector that can plugin into outlets when Supercharger is not accessible. Pretty convenient to charge the car on my parent’s driveway.

healimon 2026-03-12 14:48

Yes. I will be doing this as well. However, being that this will be a one night trip, coming from NJ, and we will be arriving with very low juice charging back up to near full would take way too long. What I will do is use this new adapter down the street and get the car back up to 85% or so and then let it slow charge over night with my mobile charger so I can got to 95%.

rongz765 2026-03-12 15:41

I don’t let mine go over 80% unless there’s a long road trip the next day. Normally I make sure I have 20~25% before arrive at my parents house, Supercharge as needed enough for the night. When I leave, I just hit on highway and find the closest Supercharger. The closest supercharger to their home is about 20 minutes drive as well, never use the charger and other none Tesla brand chargers.

digiblur 2026-03-12 15:50

You will probably need it after you sell it. Murphys law. I rolled up to a parking lot on a trip last December and low and behold. Free 150kW units with CCS1. Hell yeah. Busted the adapter out and charged while I was getting food inside.

dapi331 2026-03-12 17:13

Both were included for me. There’s threads in this. Seems to matter when and where you picked it up

IzzysGhost 2026-03-12 20:17

[It does](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/comments/1r8nasz/ccs_combo_1_adapter_came_with_my_2026_my_lr_awd/) in many areas.

WorksWithWoodWell 2026-03-15 01:06

I have a 2026 MY Juniper and work for Tesla, it doesn't in the U.S. Just the J1772 is standard. We have had owners in Cali that won the 'Trunk Lottery' and got one, but it's not standard.

IzzysGhost 2026-03-15 02:15

When we picked up our first 2026 Tesla MY, the Tesla associate doing the delivery looked in the Trunk, and said, “Hold on. You’re missing a part.” Then he came back with the adapter in a box. Our second MY a couple of months later had it in the trunk already. Google it. Lots of customers report it’s delivered with their vehicle. It depends on the area you’re in. For some reason, some Tesla sales supply and others don’t.
