FSD and sunglasses

d_dauber | 2026-03-10 11:20 | 5 views

From your experience, how does FSD handle the driver wearing sunglasses. Does it set off the alerts to pay attention? The sales advisor said you cant wear dark sunglasses if using FSD. That seems a little odd. Thanks

Ive used dark sunglasses with FSD and no issues or it barking at me.

Superbw99 2026-03-10 11:23

I’ve been wearing sunglasses for a long time with FSD and had no issues. My S is HW3 and never nags me, wife’s Y on HW4 also never nags me. As long as you’re looking at the road it doesnt say anything

Hmm... I wonder if it depends partly on the HW version then. I wear dark sunglasses with my '24 MY and run FSD about 90% of the time. No issues.

theoriginalmtbsteve 2026-03-10 11:28

I use sunglasses with the free auto steer and have used them with free trials of FSD, never a problem, no warnings.

BlaineBMA 2026-03-10 11:28

Doesn't matter from our experience

Rare-Winter3355 2026-03-10 11:29

Inaccurate info from the advisor. I have to wear dark sunglasses to drive and in the 2 yrs I’ve been using FSD, I’ve had zero issues.

jabnlab 2026-03-10 11:30

I wear dark, polarized sunglasses and have had no issues with fsd nags.

LivingInMatrix 2026-03-10 11:36

In my experience, as long as your head is straight and facing forward, FSD does not bother.

ajn63 2026-03-10 11:37

Depends on sunglasses. Most of mine are polarized and trigger its “touch the wheel” alerts. Same thing when wearing baseball caps that block its view of eyeballs.

Positive_League_5534 2026-03-10 11:39

HW4 (25 MY AWD) and when wearing polarized sunglasses I do get more alerts, but not that bad since one of the v13 patches. I've never gotten a strike in 15,000 miles of FSD use. However, we don't subscribe to it since the 14.2.2 mess was released so I can't comment on the latest versions.

I have a 1 year old Tesla and I wear sunglasses with no issue with FSD. Sometimes I’ll get “Attention Monitoring Unavailable”, presumably because it cannot see my eyes(?), but it’s not nagging me any more than without sunglasses unless my face is not looking at the road.

thewittman 2026-03-10 11:41

Yeah fsd has no issues with my sunglasses.

SpenseRoger 2026-03-10 11:49

Nah I think it does that cause of the sun I get it in the mornings even without glasses

Bulky-Psychology6786 2026-03-10 11:58

This used to be true with HW4 (I can't speak to HW3), until one of the updates changed it quite a while ago. Both my wife and I wear dark polarized sunglasses while we drive and never get this warning now, but back when we first purchased our 2024 MY it did care about sunglasses.

tomsos1 2026-03-10 12:00

I’m guessing the OP was referring to being able to wear dark sunglasses and not get alerts for not paying attention. So basically you can shut your eyes and the car can’t tell. And yes I believe this to be basically true.

Montaxx 2026-03-10 12:02

Paint eyes on the sunglasses

Eyehopeuchoke 2026-03-10 12:02

My Wife has a pair of Oakley sunglasses that it doesn’t care about. She also has a pair of Prada sunglasses that it will constantly nag at her if she’s wearing. I’d just argue that the FSD has good taste. Lol

d_dauber 2026-03-10 12:04

LOL well I wasnt intending to shut my eyes but hey, if it works...

wtfredditacct 2026-03-10 12:05

Same in my '26

Car_Lunch_Box 2026-03-10 12:08

I use a pair of prescription Ray Bans… I’ve fallen asleep with them on and the MY didn’t notice…

Heffeweizen 2026-03-10 12:11

As others have said, FSD cares more about where your head is pointing than where your eyes are pointing. Back in the day things were different and it had to see your eyes or it would complain. These days it doesn't need to see your eyes.

sQuds 2026-03-10 12:49

The camera sees using IR, your sunglasses might as well not be there at all. Same reason an iPhone can unlock while you’re wearing them, your eyes aren’t hidden from it by sunglasses.

10xMaker 2026-03-10 12:56

Works just fine on V14

ConclusionFlat1843 2026-03-10 13:15

When I wear sunglasses, it's as if FSD (HW3) ignores me. I can look away as long as my face is generally pointed frontwards. I've often thought if I had a brace holding my head up, I could take a nap.

globesdustbin 2026-03-10 13:25

Sunglasses are fine but my ballcap sets it off a lot so I take it off.

Draygoon2818 2026-03-10 13:44

My sunglasses are polarized and have a reflective coating on them. I haven't had any issues.

ckybam69 2026-03-10 14:01

sunglasses no issues. hats seem to cause issues sometimes though.

Independent_Steak652 2026-03-10 14:14

I get fewer nags with sunglasses on. 2023 model y.

Ok-Measurement2476 2026-03-10 14:47

No issues with nag as long as you’re facing forward

StormTrpr66 2026-03-10 17:34

I wear regular prescription glasses with Transitions lenses that turn dark in daylight and in the week and a half I've had the car have never had an issue. A couple of times it gave me the Keep Hands Available nag when I was eating a pizza at night and a couple of warnings to pay attention when I spent too much time messing around with settings on the touchscreen but nothing unexpected.

Zealousideal-Sea-617 2026-03-10 19:23

No issues at all with glasses

HopzCO 2026-03-12 15:49

Not sure why they are talking about. Easily 15k miles on FSD, the majority with sunglasses and never had a single issue.
