Worth it or Should I look more into a 23/24

Was wondering what you guys thought on this deal. I’m looking to get a used Model Y but would like to be around $400-$425 a month Would it be better to keep looking out for a 23/24 around that price range instead of this one I don’t plan on getting or using FSD but is the FSD that much better on HW4? Any input would be appreciated

I wouldn't buy anything older than 2023, it's not just about HW4, the cpu is also older and can't handle any AI features that are being offered on Ryzen cpu chips. Not to mention the battery is notably degraded on a 2020 vs a 2023. Atleast consider a 2022 which I found last year for 27K, granted this was a time where sales where very good and now it's closer to 29K but I'd greatly advise you to steer away from a 2020. There are also notable improvements to the cabin, noise reduction and reliability fixes. My vote is to look around, this is the beggining of summer if you can wait till the end, you'll easily get a 2023 for around this price. Also plan to pay around 1k for the cost and install price of a level 2 charger.

Been quite happy with the 2020 LR I picked up last year. Only upgrade I really wish I had was the newer FSD hardware, but would have needed to buy new (and pay more than double to get that) As a side benefit, if you get the earlier 2020 models they don't have the external speaker that plays the annoying safety hum. Makes it much easier to sneak up on ppl 😂 Mine had 43K miles, bought it for $24,999 and got the $4k instant EV rebate.

Not for a 2020. Get a late 22 or newer. They have the newer AMD processors which make the screen much snappier. My early 2022 intel is slow and can barely stream movies. My 2023 AMD MY is sooo fast and streams movies just as fast as my iPhone or tv at home.

I’m sorry but this is crazy I know a guy that bout a 2023 with 8k miles awd and enhanced autopilot for $22k in 2025.

Much appreciated. I think that clears it up for me and should just wait

I appreciate the info. I’ll keep on looking!

To clarify we use the AI for navigation constantly, "Find me a Mexican restaurant near me that's 4.5 stars and above and recommend what's popular to order" for example. Soon it will control car features, it's honestly a must for any new Tesla owners.

If you’re okay with a slower cpu/touchscreen experience, degraded battery, and firm ride, then this is for you. 251 miles is honestly pretty poor range. Make sure to carefully analyze your situation to make sure this is the right car for you. Generally speaking, Tesla’s are often not cheap cars to own since repairs are so expensive. I know this sounds really boring but so would consider getting a used Camry or RAV4 if spending $25k is a financial stretch.

I have a Ryzen CPU in my 2022 Y and also it's not the beginning of summer.

Jedi_Gill 2026-03-10 13:14

Yes the 2022's do have it but it's most likely HW3, which is why I stated 2022 should be the minimum but to future proof it he should get HW4.

I would suggest not getting anything with 21" wheels either. The number of people you'll see on this subreddit that are fully done with the 21"s and go to 19"s or even 18"s is astounding. I get it - it came with performance, but why buy a set up that can't have a tire rotation (unless you don't care about money of course).

Griff5808 2026-03-10 16:08

Much appreciated advice. Definitely looking for a more comfortable ride

MoistMonarch 2026-03-10 23:15

Get 22 and up.

Just be sure you check the insurance premiums first. That's my biggest regret. I wouldn't have bought it if I knew that insurance companies hate EVs this much.

Available_Draw1435 2026-03-14 04:12

That seems kind of awful. I bought my ‘23 performance blue with white interior for 30k and half the miles about 6 months ago.

Available_Draw1435 2026-03-14 04:13

Don’t buy a P. I regret not just getting the LR. The wheels and ride truly suck.
