Should I get full PPF on my new Model Y Performance?

Keyblade99 | 2026-03-10 01:15 | 1 views

Just ordered my tesla MYP and I’ve been wondering if I should get full PPF on the car or not just wanted to get some feedback before delivery day thank you!

I waffled back and forth on this very decision and ultimately decided not to. The cost of full ppf was so expensive it doesn't make sense. It's the best car I've ever owned but PPF is for ultra luxury cars IMO. I've also heard it doesn't last forever and is a PITA to remove when it goes bad. That's my reasoning behind not getting it.

My wife and I do most of driving on the highway and we wanted to protect the soft paint. It’s been holding up great for about 3 years now with over 210,000kms on the car. Plus we had decided to do a satin PPF on it and makes it a little easier to spot in the parking lot.

At the very least get the shark fins for the rear doors. Mine took a beating in the first month without the PPF.

Keyblade99 2026-03-10 01:38

Exactly That’s my point of view too, it’s not like a $100,00+ car and I don’t plan on reselling the car I hear a lot of people say it’s mainly to uphold its resell value and I hear others say they would get it cause the paint is thinner than standard manufactures which makes sense so just wanted some insight 👍

I wouldn’t. It doesn’t prevent issues, it just moves them up a level. If you’re that concerned, put the money you would have paid for PPF into a HYSA, and you’ll have more than enough to repaint down the road if needed

dapi331 2026-03-10 01:46

I'm not familiar with those, got a link handy?

808_GhostRider 2026-03-10 01:47

I always get “full front” ppf as rock chips on the front are pretty much a guarantee if I don’t. If you drive on dirt or gravel frequently, maybe think about doing the doors. But other than that, rear ppf isn’t worth it imho

collegedreads 2026-03-10 01:49

Meh. Second MY, still have my 2020 LR. Sure it’s nice to add wraps and PPF and ceramic coating and blah blah. But my first one is fine save for some chips. The key is it never really bothered me much. Just get the stuff that matters to you and forget the rest. It’s a car. People are gonna dent it and PPF ain’t gonna save it lol. I got some tint because I regretted not doing it on my first MY. And the MYPs look mean as hell with and without tint. But the rest is just noise.

ADampWedgie 2026-03-10 01:52

Thought about it. Have a MYP. Happy I didn’t. It’s really not worth it on this cost of car. It’s a daily driver, not a garaged weekend drive car.

Your money your car your decision

parkpassgoaway 2026-03-10 01:54

I hear the resale argument but then I think to myself, is the amount you're going to make on resale really as much as it costs to PPF the car? In my view it wasn't close enough to justify it.

KansasKing107 2026-03-10 02:12

Only get PPF if you want a different look to the car and if you think that look is worth the money. If you just want some protection get some PPF for the front and lower back doors. Generally speaking, if you own the car for a few years and sell/trade in the future, you’re extremely unlikely to get the cost or even part of the cost of the PPF back.

I have done my last 3 Teslas including my new MYP. I personally love it. Much easier to wash, stays clean longer, and I don’t have to be super careful when washing because the PPF protects against swirls. It was definitely expensive, but I just added it to the price of the car (in my mind). At the bare minimum, do the front, side mirrors, and rocker panels. Tesla paint isn’t the most durable. However, I do see the point of the folks who say no.

wasabicoated 2026-03-10 02:29

For gloss, do the front and rear door only For matte, the whole car, of course, because that’ll be weird if you don’t.

teambigchief 2026-03-10 02:29

I got the front bumper, mini rocker panels, piano black pieces (front vents, bottom lip, mirrors, and rear diffuser) done in PPF and then 3M ceramic coated everything but wheels and glass. $2k

Keyblade99 2026-03-10 02:31

Why are the back doors a huge thing?

Keyblade99 2026-03-10 02:31

Understand the front but why the back doors? Sorry for the dumb question

SK10504 2026-03-10 02:32

I installed it in the front. Did it myself. Did it come out perfect? No, but I’m happy with the results and saved a boatload of money. Also ceramic coated myself. We have some nasty winters and sometimes get stuck behind the salt spreader, so the front ppf helps immensely. The combination of ppf and ceramic coating has definitely sped up the washing process (i usually rinseless wash) year round.

wasabicoated 2026-03-10 02:33

Car is wider in the back if you look at it. Front tires will kick rocks up to the rear doors. From Google: “Tesla Model Y rear doors are highly susceptible to "sandblasting" damage from road debris due to the car's flared rear fender design. This causes significant paint chips on lower rear doors/quarter panels within months. Essential protection includes installing mud flaps and Paint Protection Film (PPF).”

snakefighting 2026-03-10 02:42

Get the “vulnerable areas package” , that’s what I got. I care about my things and take care of them.. this has greatly protected my car as I live in Utah, and travel many gravel/mountain roads. Car still looks brand new a year later!

KansasKing107 2026-03-10 02:53

Either get front mud flaps or a little PPF on the lower back doors. They can get pretty beat up with rocks and stuff coming off the front tires. Front mud flaps are cheap, easy to install, and not bad looking. Plus, the side of the car stays way cleaner between washes. In general PPF isn’t needed. I would get a ceramic or sealant for at a minimum for the front bumper just to make cleaning bugs easier.

UsefulDrivel 2026-03-10 03:27

I did the full front, mirrors, rear fender and half hood. Wish I had done the full hood. That doesn’t protect against door dings which I now have a nasty one but is fairly affordable. Think it was 650 or so, I’d do it again.

South_Place_2771 2026-03-10 03:46

I compromised and just did the front, hood … I had to stop somewhere. I wish I did the doors but then might as well do the whole damn car haha

SatoshiBlockamoto 2026-03-10 04:06

Only if you're rich and like the look. Otherwise it's just a colossal waste of money.

mangledmatt 2026-03-10 04:21

I'm getting PPF for two reasons. One is that I go to Portland, Oregon often and I'm worried that someone will key it or spray it at some point. I want to be able to replace the wrap on any panel that gets messed with. The second is that I live in Central Oregon where there are tons of gravel and fire roads so I want to drive on them stress free.

economic-buffer901 2026-03-10 05:33

Condoms (ppf) has saved me many times from highway rocks/dents and $900 well spent on full front I slapped myself. Took me almost 3 days. Learned a lot and if I upgrade, I’ll do it again. To each its own!

quentech 2026-03-10 22:58

> is the amount you're going to make on resale really as much as it costs to PPF the car? Not even close. Some buyers will want to offer **less** for a wrapped car because they don't know what mess is hiding underneath it, and it's a bit of a PITA to take off.

quentech 2026-03-10 23:00

The curves on the MY create a spot on the lower rear doors right in front of the rear wheels that gets pelted with debris from the road and tires - and with Tesla's weak paint it gets bad quick. I have Rally Armor mud flaps and front and shark fin PPF and those rear door areas still get dirty af even with the big mud flaps.

parkpassgoaway 2026-03-11 00:30

Interesting. I'm glad I didn't do it.
