Frequent windshield cracks

ads4vivek | 2026-03-09 22:27 | 46 views

Windshield cracked twice in less than 5 months of pain this brand new juniper. And now there’s this weird alert that popped up right after I got back from the service center. I am so annoyed of this issue and the sheer amount if time I have wasted from driving to service center twice and waiting for almost all day.

Believe it or not, tinting your windshield even the lightest amount can help prevent cracking after small impacts.

ads4vivek 2026-03-09 22:49

Thanks, I will consider this suggestion.

illlojik 2026-03-09 22:58

Yeah, there’s been highway impacts that I was sure would have split mine. It thankfully only left a small pit.

Col127 2026-03-09 22:58

Twice in 5 months?? That’s crazy! From highway driving I assume?

StormTrpr66 2026-03-09 23:15

Get the windshield replaced then buy the Tesla windshield insurance. $16/mo will save you a lot of hassles. I bought it right away considering I've had to replace the windshield on my last two cars.

abgtw 2026-03-09 23:27

Its really crazy that it costs that much ... glass coverage through my regular insurance is cheaper but at the risk of it counting against me more if I use it.

StormTrpr66 2026-03-09 23:28

Yep. That's why I bought the Tesla one. You get one "free" windshield replacement per year for covered incidents, then any additional ones during that year have a $100 deductible.

allenjshaw 2026-03-09 23:29

Source?

abgtw 2026-03-09 23:30

So the Tesla windshields are thin for weight savings. I go check the windshields in my old Ford Escape (super thick) or even my Nissan Leaf and its definitely beefier! The good news is that you can indeed get the cheaper Chinese glass - i.e. Fuyao windshield and its just as thick as the OEM. In fact Fuyao makes OEM windows for Teslas, my car has two!

DeathBlade94 2026-03-09 23:47

How do you figure that? Tint goes on the inside of the car and there are two additional layers after the tint before the exterior glass.

mushyspider 2026-03-09 23:51

I always tint mine and am on my fifth windshield in 4 years. I even try to repair immediately. The glass is weak af.

illlojik 2026-03-10 00:13

Personal experience.

AccomplishedLocal516 2026-03-10 00:26

Zero windshields in 13 years. Model S 2013 to my 26 Juniper. Knock, knock, knock on wood.

allenjshaw 2026-03-10 00:49

Not trying to be rude, maybe you’re just lucky. Unless you’re referring to the clear protection people put on the outside. Tint on the inside is so thin I can’t believe it provides any level of protection from rock hits on the outside. I went through 3 on my model S in 4 years but my 4 year old model 3 is knock on wood still on its original at 88k miles.

wish_you_a_nice_day 2026-03-10 01:13

Stop driving so close behind car and trucks

DrHumongous 2026-03-10 01:17

I was several Hundred yards behind a truck my last crack. Rocks fly far….

scottimusprimus 2026-03-10 01:26

Carry a windshield chip repair kit in the car. Next time you get a chip, fix it ASAP.

2beatenup 2026-03-10 01:52

What is this clear protection on the outside you talk about master?

Famous_Ad7312 2026-03-10 01:58

Cracked my MYP windshield literally 15 minutes after picking the car up in NC two months ago. Thank God my complementary windshield replacement service came with the first 30 days! Had it replaced with ZERO hassle! I subscribe to windshield replacement now and will keep it until the car falls apart!!!

SnooKiwis6943 2026-03-10 01:59

Garage queens lol

SnooKiwis6943 2026-03-10 02:00

Careful about saying the truth around here. You will get downvotes…..

Original-Definition2 2026-03-10 02:29

Dumb Q from MY owner - are these windshields weaker ?

AccomplishedLocal516 2026-03-10 02:31

I wish.180k on my first. Already up to 8k on my new. But yes it is kept in a garage overnight.

ads4vivek 2026-03-10 02:49

I do have the insurance. So cost wise I am totally covered but it’s a hassle to go this frequently

ads4vivek 2026-03-10 02:50

I keep it outside all day and night. Drive 1000 miles every month. Is keeping the car outside causing the frequent damages ?

ads4vivek 2026-03-10 02:51

Same question comes to my mind always

ads4vivek 2026-03-10 02:53

I was driving on a road that had literally no vehicle both the times. It wasn’t even raining (so no hails). One time I was just driving in a parking lot if that matters.

ads4vivek 2026-03-10 02:55

Yes once on the highway.. the first time I was just driving out of Trader Joe’s parking lot

Clu_Rebooted 2026-03-10 03:22

You were two football field lengths away and that car flung a rock at cracked your windshield?!?! I don’t think you’re good at judging distances

Constant-Anteater-58 2026-03-10 03:25

My MY has 125,000 miles. I literally have a few chips and filled them with the RainX windshield repair kit. Works well. I'm not buying a new windshield. Waste of fucking money.

Floating_Bus 2026-03-10 03:32

You must live in Houston?

allenjshaw 2026-03-10 04:44

There’s probably a few brands out there but “clearplex” is one that comes to mind. Last I checked it was pretty darn expensive though. Like half the cost of a windshield or more. On our cars anyway. Might be worth putting on a Land Rover windshield or something that costs even more.

RickS50 2026-03-10 05:31

My current record is 22 days on a windshield. Having zero glass has been well worth it. State Farm sends out a mobile glass repair company to my office so it's super convenient.

Inspectorgenuia 2026-03-10 11:06

I have a 26 model y, I’m on my 3rd windshield in 40k miles so far. I live in mountains so prob that’s why catching random rocks, but I will say that they spread way faster than normal. I’ve had rock chips on other vehicles and they were slow to ever spread , now this model y spreads the crack the first day of the chip. Idk why

SpecialistProject893 2026-03-10 13:53

Got my windshield replaced two weeks ago and last week… you guessed it… another one… so 7 day with my new one

AnOoglyBoogly 2026-03-10 14:15

Negative. Never garaged my Teslas in decade of ownership.

RickS50 2026-03-10 14:30

Ooffff! You must live in or near Arizona too... The land of 20k mile windshields. My last one for replaced from a normal freeway chip. I took a trip to Vegas and on the way back in a construction zone a big truck going the other direction kicked up a rock apparently. It made a big noise, but I couldn't see anything. It was on the border of the windshield below where I could see it from the inside. At the next charging stop I saw it, it was about 2.5" diameter and flaking glass actively. By the time I got home it has already started spreading right into my field of view. I have the Fuso or whatever beans the aftermarket windshield is now and so far I have no complaints about it.

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-03-10 14:53

When you get the windshield replaced, there's a product called "Windshield Skin" that you can have installed. Have it done professionally, and don't fall for the pre-cut. It is claimed to reduce windshield damage considerably.....my detail/wrap guy has installed it on several Teslas with no impact on wipers, cameras, etc. and his customers are happy. I'm having it done in the next few weeks. When summer driving comes along (which seems to be the worst season for flying rocks/chips), it's a good time to look at solutions like this. If you go that route, get the thinnest version (8 mil IIRC) as the thicker may be a little more finicky with the cameras.

The internet says the Ford escape windshield is 4-6mm, the Nissan leaf is 5-7mm and the Tesla model y is 8-12mm. Not sure if that's correct, but that's the info that's out there. Given the MY windshield is more of a structural element I would think it would be thicker.

saviorsreign 2026-03-10 15:29

If you buy the Tesla windshield insurance do you have to take it to Tesla to get fixed? Only asking because I live over 2 hours from the nearest facility

SpecialistProject893 2026-03-10 16:33

Switzerland :) good thing is that windshield is covered by insurance without deductable :)

abgtw 2026-03-10 17:45

Don't listen to fake AI bullshit... They pulled the Tesla number off of how thick a windshield SKIN addon is! [https://www.exclusivemotorworks.com/product/tesla-model-y/](https://www.exclusivemotorworks.com/product/tesla-model-y/) None of those numbers you quoted are correct, Google Gemini AI should be ashamed. Source: Can go look at all my vehicle windshields, the Nissan (2018 OEM glass) and Ford (2013 OEM glass) are at least 2x thicker than my Tesla!

Impressive_Jury_2211 2026-03-10 17:58

Stop tailgating

RickS50 2026-03-10 18:10

Are Swiss roads made out of rocks too? 😆

thewashley 2026-03-10 19:15

Location matters. Texas is awful for windshields.

PopcornIsForever 2026-03-10 23:35

I’ve had my windshield replaced twice on my old model Y and once on Juniper since Nov 2024. 3 times in 1.5 yrs…. I get Tesla windshield protection now. I thought this was very abnormal and suggested that it must be a manufacturing defect to Tesla but no one cares

GaijinFoot 2026-03-10 23:56

Doesn't America have windscreen protection? In the uk it doesn't could as a fault and affect your premium at all. Usually £25 for a chip repair and £115 for an entire new windscreen. Like $160 for you

mdwish 2026-03-11 04:41

Welcome to Tesla, you’ll be at a service center frequently. I had issues once a month for the first 9 months of ownership. It’s ok now, but these cars are built for a good time, not a long time.

filtervw 2026-03-11 12:17

Maybe keep the distance from the car in front, especially in the one in front is a heavy truck.

SpecialistProject893 2026-03-11 15:58

Nah just a lot of stones on the streets :)

ads4vivek 2026-03-11 22:18

Seattle

RickS50 2026-03-12 06:32

Same here, and plenty of lifted trucks and SUV's without mud flaps to fling those rocks at your windshield.
