Model Y L in US / EU? Bigger batteries?

Anonym0oO | 2026-03-08 17:00 | 154 views

Since the Model S and X are discontinued in some regions and are going to be discontinued in a few months everywhere else, two questions arise: The Model Y L coming to the US and EU should only be a matter of time, in my opinion? And the more important one: Since S/X are gone, the 3/Y could receive larger batteries without entering the territory of S/X or reaching their range levels, because they are not there anymore. How possible is it that bigger batteries (≈ 90 kWh usable or so) will be used in the 3 and Y? Especially since other companies are already putting larger batteries into similarly sized cars? Really looking forward to hearing your opinions.

I find that whatever is the logical thing for Tesla to do is the opposite action they take. The Y L should have been released in America first because *cue Americans are all fat jokes*

- Remove autosteer - remove ultrasonic sensors before front camera - remove radar in favor of vision before software is ready - put obnoxious “curve control” in autopilot - nearly everything about the cybertruck instead of a vehicle with mass market appeal - massively overstate FSD abilities and timelines for a decade What else did I miss? EDIT: Dear god, how did I forget removing the turning stalks in newer cars

Wipers. Alienate most of your customers who built your brand by opening your mouth

Turn signal stalks on the model S, X, and 3

Yes.

The y l is still super small for a 6 seater. American adults aren’t fitting in the 3rd row and 2nd row even is cramped.

schaudhery 2026-03-08 22:23

Yeah the X was too small as a 6 seater so the Y L (smaller than the X) is wild. The Y L should have competed with Rivian R1S and Kia EV9.

I'd consider trading our 23 seven seater for one but not if it doesn't come with autopilot OR FSD is way cheaper per month (I'd possibly do $500 for the year or something like that). Our current configuration Y will likely be in the family until it's too expensive to keep going honestly. Included autopilot is a set and forget for 80% of my wife's daily commute. Paying $99 a month to bridge that 20% gap is a non starter.

Same

I love the steering wheel buttons, but I am well aware that there are people who absolutely will not purchase a Tesla because of it. Removing them outright was a dumb decision.

Animanganime 2026-03-09 00:23

The proportion looks so much better than the current non L models.

Hockeyshot39 2026-03-09 00:31

I love FSD…

Such-Regret4652 2026-03-09 00:32

They would do so if the car can maintain their current weight. Otherwise, no. For handling, safety and packaging issues among others, Tesla doesn't just get more range by adding more cells like other brands do and make their cars heavier. That's why Teslas are almost always the lightest EVs for their size and range.

Hockeyshot39 2026-03-09 00:35

Many cars don’t have one lmao

Praying for a Model Y L Plaid.

Now that I ordered they'll release the newer version soon

Right? Other manufacturers do the equivalent of “putting in a bigger gas tank” instead of making the vehicle more efficient. Once you start looking at miles per kw it makes more sense which ones are more efficient.

Such-Regret4652 2026-03-09 08:05

Exactly. Focusing on efficiency is the only way. That's why the new cybercab can get away with only a tiny 35kwh battery and get 200miles of range.

Anonym0oO 2026-03-09 13:44

True. But when towing, a 10–15 kWh larger battery would be nice to have. Also, in the EU, or at least in Germany, speeds of 90 mph and more are normal, and I really notice the range drop when you don’t want to stay behind trucks and drive these speeds. I know it’s a local issue, but German OEMs compensate for this by putting bigger batteries in their cars, like the iX3 with its 108 kWh battery while being similar efficient at these speeds. And while my Model Y’s 78 kWh usable battery when new sounds nice, don’t forget the degradation of 10–15%, making it a sub-70 kWh battery ‚pretty quickly‘.

Thanks for your sacrifice 🙏

isurviveoncoffee 2026-03-09 23:00

Tesla needs more revenue and they just removed a 7 seater. I could see this being the next logical way for them to get more sales.

Outside-Comparison12 2026-03-10 00:22

Would be nice

matthew19 2026-03-10 03:52

I hope it gets the tan interior option.

Brutaka1 2026-03-10 04:34

My assumption is they're going to replace the Model S with the Roadster 2 and the Model X with the Model Y L. That's been my guess.

gtg465x2 2026-03-10 20:32

Current Y Premium RWD isn't far off at 357 miles... would only need about 12% more battery (92 kWh instead of 82 kWh).
