What to expect?

Hello everyone, I’m about to pick up my first Tesla. A 2024 model Y long range. I plan on heavily using the FSD. And the last time I tried it out it felt like overseeing a teenager drive around. What does FSD feel like now? How bad is the nagging when looking away from the road? The one thing I really disliked the last time I tried it was that it felt like I was constantly being monitored and it made my whole experience really negative because if I use FSD, i might look away a few times, not abuse it, but also I don’t want to worry about being flagged every single time. Do you have any recommendations or aftermarket tools I can use? Thanks

If you have HW4, it's very good. Not sure when they switched from HW3 to HW4.

Just pay attention to the road and it's fine. Pull out your phone and you get nags. Pretty easy.

I would say FSD 12 two years ago drives like a teenager. FSD 13 last year drives as well as my mom. And I'm not too proud to say FSD 14 drives better than me. However, the nagging is unchanged. Since about ~18 months ago when hands free FSD was introduced. You only get a few seconds when you look away. Sunglasses are your friend. And at night? Well I have no tips for the nag.

Yes the one I bought comes with hw4

The nagging is because you are 100% responsible for the operation of the vehicle. It definitely nags less than before. For the occasional issue, that’s what the strikes are for. A couple of times, no big deal, but if it is more habitual, then yea, it’s going to put you in timeout.

I understand and it makes a lot of sense. I know a lot people would ask: if it’s full self driving but you’re not allowed to get distracted then what’s the point of having it.

It is NOT Full Self Driving. It is Full Self Driving (Supervised). Tesla paid millions in lawyer fees over that I suspect.

Makes sense lol

It’s waaay better than the earlier versions you describe! 14.2.2.whatever on HW4 is: far smoother, more human, and flows with traffic much better. I have logged 1/3 of my miles in FSD. I’d say it behaves very predictably and safely in everything I have observed over the fall and winter. It’s very steadfast, more so than the way most people drive. I find it works well on open road, freeways, jams and tight traffic and congested city streets. It even dodges debris in the lane and negotiates road work (lane shifts, detours, flagger controlling the intersection, etc. Heck, it even handled a street light outage in a busy 12 lane/4-way intersection at night! FSD, being strictly vision-based, however, has limitations. Noticeably, they’re brought on by weather. Namely, rain, windshield fogging and film, plus road grime getting on the camera lenses. When they degrade the image you get on screen warnings. I can’t recall it ever shutting it self off though. Tesla has improved the stability and it shows. I can’t remember when I last intervened due to an unsafe or unpredictable line choice. I hardly ever get nags since the past few updates. When I do, I usually deserved it having looked at the display too long fiddling with some setting, looked at my phone or even at passengers too long. When I intervene, it’s frequently due to my annoyance of its lane choice/lane switching and the mapping’s navigational choices. When you’re commuting, for instance, you learn the best lane to be in and which bridges to use or exits to avoid (because there might be a train!). Obviously, it can’t predict our preferences, but it sure can try! I will say, I stay ever present knowing someday I may need to intervene in the blink of an eye. A few incidences on the older versions showed me how it can make erroneous choices. AS GOOD AS IT IS, YOU HAVE TO STAY ALERT! Over time, I learned to relax and trust it to a degree. It’s important to be more vigilant whenever circumstances warrant it, acting like a defensive driver, which is part of the learning process. Still, you can let your guard down frequently and relax a bit in most conditions. It’s a good tool. Just know when to intervene and don’t hesitate to take over. Resuming FSD is just a button push away!

I have not found the nagging to be excessive at all. The only times it nags me is when I've been legitimately not paying attention for too long. But normal driving, I can glance at my phone, pick it up, turn around briefly to grab something from the back seat, fire up my Kindle to play an audiobook, look outside and check out the scenery while driving, and a lot of other stuff without getting nagged. But when I was digging through the car's menus in the main display and lost track of how long I had been doing that, I got a gentle nag that was a chime and a notification flashing on the screen to pay attention. I looked up and that was enough. I've also gotten one or two alerts to put pressure on the steering wheel. I'm guessing it just couldn't see my eyes. One time the in-cabin camera was obstructed by how I had placed the sun visor which was blocking the view between my face and the camera. But nothing excessive or annoying.

Mid 2023 was the switch.

For me the biggest change is hands free. Completely different world even with the nags.

It is better. I use it frequently. I have gotten use to it and I know when to intervene. I am going to continue using it. It is a very relaxing way to drive. I used it to drive from San Diego to Buckeye Arizona and it worked ok. This morning it could not make up its' mind about going through a yellow light and I just punched it. Problem solved. There are stretches of freeway that had work zones but the work zones have been removed for several months but FSD still thinks the speed limit is 55 so it starts slowing down. I know what is going on so I kick it out of FSD and drive myself until FSD figures out that the work zone if over and then I go back into FSD.

Gotcha. I had a chance to drive it yesterday and it blew my mind. It’s comforting knowing we’re heading that direction
