Tow hitch is worth it. It’s not like aftermarket you’d just plug and play it. It’s an actual tow bar that’s installed. Third party won’t be much cheaper, I’d just get it from Tesla.
Mine came with the parcel shelf, I bought the 3w all weather mats 9 or 10 piece for the same price Tesla charges for just the fronts.
Keep in mind the Tesla one comes installed and is guaranteed to fit. That peace of mind might be worth the higher price, but that's for you to decide.
I really like the pet liner. I think I paid $200 for mine and no regrets. Pay attention to the washing instructions. I’d go 3rd party for floor mats
Get the tow hitch from Tesla. It has the wiring for lights and the software package to enable tow mode for navigation. That’s if you are planning to tow with it. For a simple bike rack, you could probably go for a 3rd party option. However, personally- I think from a resale value (if you care about that) having the Tesla one would be better.
3rd part floors mats are def the way to go. Just as good and plenty of options for less money.
I would get the tow hitch direct from them unless you’re willing to buy and install an aftermarket one yourself. Regarding the other accessories, there are third party options. Some which may be better priced and/or offer better coverage such as some third party floor mats. You may be able to buy a parcel shelf from an owner that doesn’t use theirs.
You'll need tesla toolbox for the software piece. Just pay the 1300 at tesla. Your probably only save a hundred or 200 for the headache
Most of the accessories that I ultimately purchased were not from Tesla, and some of the ones that I got from Tesla ultimately were returned. The hitch is one thing that I would suggest you do get if you are interested in using it. Not like typical cars where you can just bolt on. it requires removal of the bumper and it is more involved.
I got it. Haven’t used it in 3 years but it’s there if I need to.
I want it for the bike rack. So aftermarket then?
I think it’s because he is looking at the standard model Y
From Tesla
You are not saving much money by going 3rd party, just get it from Tesla
I installed one myself. It was plug and play. The hitch was around $250 and the plug was $50. It did require about an hour or two of work. I would have liked to find my car had come with a hitch but none were available at the time. Others may not have the patience or tools to do the job. It took about six tools and a torque wrench was the only tool that I wouldn’t expect most people to have on hand.
Tow hitch from Tesla. All the rest, aftermarket.
Biggest regret for me was not going with tow hitch at time of purchase.
I got the tow hitch from factory as part of the build. It did not come with the wiring for lights. Am I missing something?
I like the branding matching so went with Tesla floor mats. If you don’t mind paying a little extra the quality is great and looks sharp with the chrome logo.
Tow hitch from Tesla. Aftermarket kits are all worse, even if they are mechanically better, because they don't come with the tow software package that shuts up alerts about your trailer following you and also has some nice things like indicating when your wiring may be disconnected or wrong. The cheapest way to get it direct from Tesla is pre-optioned with the car instead of a later add-on. If you want it even cheaper, get a real Tesla kit from eBay or something and ask Tesla to install it, and they will turn on the software flag. Or do it yourself and then ask them to turn the software on after but I'm not 100% sure they will. They will not enable it for third party hitch kits. The other stuff should be the same price. I'd recommend buying them later, so you can use a credit card on them and get cash back. Obviously, think about what you actually need. * Parcel Shelf - I've never found this actually useful as a "shelf," it's too high. It's more of a privacy cover for what's in your trunk. Depending on where you go and what you leave in your car, this could range from vital to useless. Third party alternatives are fine too. * Pet Liner - this is maybe the one exception, if you plan to have pets in car day 1. It's a nice liner, you can get third party ones on amazon, but the Tesla one is a bit better fitting than most I've seen (still not very). The pleather (vinyl) seats can easily be punctured by claws, or stained, they're not the most resilient material. * Air Mattress - refer to TeslaCamping sub posts. I think it's *okay* but personally I prefer the Lost Horizon mat as it's a bit more plush and uses a battery-powered flextail pump so it can be used outside of the car easily too. LH also fills up from the head instead of the foot so it's easier to do without opening the trunk into the cold and the bugs. * All weather liner - these are OK, they've improved, but there are definitely good aftermarket mats to consider like 3dmaxpider or tuxmats for great coverage. Skip most weathertechs, their cuts suck. * Roof rack - to be honest, the roof rack setup on Teslas is cursed and I'd say these cars are just not the ideal choice if this is a heavy consideration. But if you're gonna do it, get the Tesla one, and make *them* install it. So if it breaks the glass, they don't get to point fingers elsewhere.
I went with Tesla. They have the hitch with its vehicle specific wiring harness. And they enable tow mode on the car so it’s not forever warming to of a vehicle following dangerously close. Yes, somebody knowledgeable can install a wiring harness. But I don’t want random splices in my vehicle wiring harness. And, yes, somebody knowledgeable can install a hitch, but I didn’t have the space to disassemble the parts and keep them safe from damage while I worked. Happy to have Tesla install the Tesla hitch and make the Tesla change to the software.
Yes. It should have it, make sure you check inside the hole. I've definitely connected and towed a trailer that needed the wiring for lights and brakes before.
Tow hitch directly from Tesla.
Weather mats, parcel shelf, and pet liner is a must for me
get it from Tesla. no hassle
Which hole? The hollow part of the hitch or somewhere inside the trunk?
Pricey, but I will ditto the pet liner. It is new to me so cannot comment on durability, but I like it more than the $80 one I was using previously.
I'm thinking of the hole the hitch is in, as in behind the cover plate. Like, next to the square metal hitch, there might be a connector in there. Edit: mentioned in tow instructions https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/modely/en_us/GUID-F5C80FF5-8DE3-4750-8BAF-0DCC0CFA0C5C.html#ELECTRICALCONNECTIONS
I’d have to lean towards the factory tow package but then replacing the weak tow bar if you’re towing anything with a hitch height difference of more than one inch. (It’s in the specs). And I can’t imagine many trailers are that low. I’ll also point out that the way the receiver is hidden makes it a pita.
Cool, I'll have to take the cover off when I have a chance this weekend. I'm also thinking about picking up a magnetic cover to make things easier. Only one I got was the tow hitch
Oh yeah, I got one of those. Works great, easy to remove, but it's not fallen off after about 2 years of use. Not even in automated car washes. Sadly I can't remember where I got it--I think they're pretty much all the same though, aliexpress amazon dropship special.
Tow hitch from Tesla. Service menu needs to be updated. Plus, preserve your warranty Everything else aftermarket
I went with the Tesla one. They came to my house and and installed it while I worked. The installer was very careful to not do any damage to the finish. Very happy even though a bit more expensive than a third party item and install.
When I’m on my model, why it had a hitch on it and there is software option for Towing. I’m guessing you don’t have that option?
The Tesla parcel shelf sucks. And the pet liner is no great thing either.
~~In case you don't know, you can't get the Tesla tow hitch afterwards, i asked.~~ EDIT: Nevermind, i guess you can. Tesla rep told me it wasn't an option.
U can always bring it back to Tesla to install the tow hitch after delivery.. granted it will cost a little more. I found this out because I’m trying to get a model Y delivered before end of this month to transfer FSD and I really wanted the hitch. Tesla rep gave me this fun fact.
I bought an aftermarket Frunk mat and the Tesla Frunk mat is by far the best. Personal opinion, the Tesla products are exceptionally better than what I’ve seen from the aftermarket. I do have the 3D Elegant Floor mats, which are exceptional as well, no regrets there..
Tow hitch is worth it
Tesla one for software and compatibility . What I don’t like is that the chasis can only stand a vertical weight of 70 kgs in the tow hitch
It would be a lot cheaper, but you won’t get access to Tesla’s software. Not really necessary, but it’s nice to have. I almost went the aftermarket route, since I didn’t want to pay 1300. It was going to be around 600 installed. But I’m glad I didn’t do it because ended up selling the car and got a new one with a stock tow hitch.
Yeah, you won’t have tow software with an aftermarket
I could have used it a few times if I had one. I just bought a new Y and chose one a tow hitch. I will probably never need to use it now 😂
You can fetch a decent aftermarket hitch for ~$200. If you're capable of installing yourself, I think the savings is worth it. Covers the cost of getting a nice bike rack!
I was worried about that. I towed a 16 foot trailer and as soon as I hooked up the wire harness, my car recognized it. It went right into tow mode. I thought it would be an issue but I guess I got lucky
Get it.
I got all weather liner from Amazon for $100.
They misinformed you. It is available in your app to order.
Same.. and finding out it’s +$300 after purchase
Housemate wouldn't wait for Tesla appointment, cost the same, didn't get software, installer snapped half the tow panel clips in the process. Not worth aftermarket. Just get Tesla to do it. Can tow fine but car thinks I'm being tailed!
Do you have a link to it?
Tow hit hitch, yes. Accessories, no. I made the mistake of not getting the tow hitch on my 2023 MYLR and I ended up biting the bullet and paying $1300 for Tesla to install it afterwards. Luckily mobile service was able to do it right in my driveway but definitely get it from the factory if you think you’ll need it at all.

I mean vertical load on the hitch, for installing a bike rack

Lol, this comment makes me feel good!.. I am a huge DIYer, I'm even running my own electric and installing a level 2 charger myself, I installed a hitch on our previous SUV.. But for some reason I felt like I would regret not getting the tow hitch from tesla at purchase so we did!
Yup! Here you go https://a.co/d/09bODPJV
after delivery? like a year later say?
It is not. https://www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/modely/en_us/GUID-F5C80FF5-8DE3-4750-8BAF-0DCC0CFA0C5C.html Installing and Using a Carrier When using the tow package to carry accessories, the 2" x 2" (5 cm x 5 cm) square hitch receiver is designed to support vertical loads of up to 160 lbs (72 kg). Ball mounts that are compatible with the square receiver must be purchased separately.
Where are you that they installed the hitch via mobile service visit to you? I’m handy enough to do it myself, but would probably pay for Tesla’s if they came to me…
Thank you!
Yes. I have a 2024 MYP that does not have a hitch. Why: As T discounted the car that I did buy by $5,500, I chose not to worry about the hitch at the time of purchase. Let's say I want to buy that hitch today. I'm opening up my T App... Upgrades... Installable Upgrades... (scroll down)... Model Y Tow Package $1300 That INCLUDES: 1) Tow Bar & 2" Ball, 2) Trailer Harness, 3) Tow Mode Software Package, AND ALSO... shipping it to your local T service center AND installation. Pretty well everything except buying a pizza for you while you wait. So, yeah... somebody lied to you. Sorry.
> Pet Liner - It's a nice liner, you can get third party ones on amazon, but the Tesla one is a bit better fitting than most I've seen Teslarati's are better.
I’m in Maryland. It’s honestly not a matter of being handy or not. If you want the genuine OEM hitch Tesla needs to install it. They also enable tow mode in the software so it’s more than just physically installing it. Can’t do that on your own or with a 3rd party installer.
Air mattress looks nice if you plan to car camp. It’s like perfectly fit to the Tesla. I did 3d mats USA. There are much cheaper options for all weathers than Tesla or 3dmusa. Would have got Tesla all weathers if it was in the store. They only had old models ones when I got mine
nice, good to know. I was informed by the Tesla rep at the center. How can they be this clueless?
Tesla doesn't pay them commission, they have little incentive to know more. No pressure sales is a double-edged sword. Thanks for the conversation. Have a great life!
Get the tow hitch for sure factory installed and the other stuff you can find either used or aftermarket afterwards. Also opt in for the glass insurance.
Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
Tesla mats are better than aftermarket
No that’s wrong. Just hook up the wires and software will automatically detect it.
shit I’ve been loading right to the limit without knowing the actual limit. thank you
Factory tow hitch all the way.
I needed hitch for bike rack. Cost me about $550 from u-haul. What I liked about them is they installed hitches the vendors had not tested yet on jupiters.
$135 for the parcel shelf is diabolical. i got it for free with my tesla and it is so poorly designed that i just throw it off to the side 95% of the time because the way it folds out is horrible
