Anyone here financing through Tesla using Santander Consumer as the lender? Any issues or concerns?

StormTrpr66 | 2026-03-05 19:47 | 8 views

I just financed through Tesla using their 0.9% offer and it looks like the lender is Santander Consumer. I just got my first statement and was going to set up autopay but a quick google search turns up that this lender has horrible ratings and basically sucks. Some people reported that their autopay was mysteriously canceled, in some cases leading to missed payments and even repossession. Has anyone here run into issues with them? Anything I should be aware of? Is their autopay reliable or should I just pay directly every month? Any other issues like getting the title after the loan is paid or anything like that?

If auto pay is canceled. You would notice the withdrawal did not occur, then pay manually. How would anyone miss it long enough to worry about a repo. I pickup my Y in 1 hr. And I have the same lender. Google said it is a Spainish bank with good ratings.

I haven't had issues with the autopay over the past year and a half.

lol...we must be using different googles! Here's what came up for me. AI Overview While [Santander Consumer USA](https://santanderconsumerusa.com/payments) offers free automatic payments, it has a poor reputation with numerous user reports of system failures, including **autopay being turned off without notice**, resulting in missed payments. While it is a legitimate, large lender, **customers frequently complain about inaccurate payment amounts, poor customer service, and, in extreme cases, wrongful repossession.**  * **System Reliability Concerns:** Multiple customers have reported that their scheduled auto-pay failed or was deactivated without notice, leading to late fees or penalties. * **Customer Experience:** Santander Consumer USA holds a low rating on customer review sites, with many complaints regarding unprofessional service and difficulty resolving payment discrepancies. * **Alternative Recommendations:** If using their auto-pay, it is highly recommended to manually verify every month that the payment has cleared to avoid potential issues. * **Support:** If issues arise, contact their service department immediately for confirmation of payments.

I'm almost 2 years with these guys, no problems as of yet.

You would be better off using autopay from your bank's bill payment system. The less people/companies you give access to your account the safer.

I just got assigned to them, so this is very timely. I think that I’ll use my bank’s scheduled automatic payment system instead.

No problems for us.

Santander is HUGE in the loan business, so if you look online for anyone with Santander issues you will find a ton of them mostly because they have millions of customers. I have had no problems with them over 2 years, my Tesla loan is with them.

No problem for me either. Had mine since May 2024.

Nobody reviews companies like that unless they had a terrible experience. It's not a restaurant where you might want to recommend them. I've used them for 4 months and no issues yet 🤞

Never mind my last response...it was to the wrong post in the wrong thread so I deleted it. Anyway, that's good to hear. I'm stuck with them for 5 years so hoping for the best.

Santander is a subprime lender. That should tell you all you need to know.

I had Santander for 2 months before I moved my loan to my credit union. A guy I work with had a loan through them and had a car Repo'd that was current on payments. They said sorry it was a glitch in their system but once it was repo'd they couldn't do anything and he was SOL. He had to get a lawyer and fight them because they said he had to pay the difference of what they got at auction and what he still owed. It was a whole sh\*t show. He didn't have a car for about 4 months because he couldn't get another loan while all this was going on. I don't recommend them.

I'm surprised they are offering such low rates like the 0.9% they are offering for Teslas. Usually subprime lenders have astronomical rates since they tend to work with people that have very low credit scores.

So I haven't had issues with auto pay being cancelled but do note that it draws the money from your account on the due date. You cannot change the date of payment. The other thing that's been problematic is you can either use the app or the website, not both. I setup my account initially via the web, saved the credentials to my password manager. Later I attempted to sign into the app on my phone. Incorrect password. Hmm but I use a password manager. Confirm password is correct. Then I reset the password via the app on the phone with my email blah blah blah. Get in, save the new password to the password manager. Think all is well. Time passes, next month I go to the website try to sign in. Incorrect password. Fuck me. Double check the password is correct, it is. Try to log into the app with said password. Works immediately. As a systems engineer my instinct is to poke at this. So I reset my password via the website, get signed in, save the new password. Then immediately go to my phone and try the new password in the App, incorrect password. I called them because financial institutions should have good IT practices and this was decidedly not. To their credit they managed to escalate me 4 times to people that increasingly saw it as a problem, but we're sadly unsure how to do anything about it. That was July of 24. It's still broken today, and I just use the website.

I'd guess they are getting some cash from Tesla directly to offer such a rate.

I had no issues with Autopay, it was always exactly on time. After my vehicle was totaled and my insurance overpaid to settle my financing (my insurance took 3 months to pay out after the accident, its own issue) it did take Santander about 3 weeks to get me a refund check for the over payment as I had continued to make payments after my insurance determined the payment amount so nothing was late, but no real complaints. If you message their support using their web portal it doesn't seem to send you an email or any kind of notice that they have responded which is frustrating as I thought they had ignored me and finally logged in to send another message but they had actually responded within 24 hours but had sent no notification to my email or phone number on file that there was a response waiting in their portal 🤷🏻‍♂️

Use your banks bill pay service.

karlurbanite 2026-03-07 14:19

No issues. Going on 2 years with them.

StormTrpr66 2026-03-13 16:32

Right, I'm in the USA, so I'm using their USA division.
