I designed a hidden garage door remote mount for Model Y since Tesla removed Homelink

Crafty_Jump7215 | 2026-03-05 17:55 | 439 views

My Model Y doesn’t have Homelink, and I got tired of my garage remote just sliding around in the center console. So I ended up designing a small mount that holds the clicker on the inside of the door panel. It keeps the remote mostly out of sight but still easy to press when pulling into the garage. I made it for **2020–2024 Model Y**, since those don’t come with a built-in opener unless you add Homelink. Just curious — would anyone else actually use something like this? If there’s enough interest I might make a few more.

This is nice and I will add the Tesla HomeLink add on is also nice. Never having to press the button to open or close the garage door is something you get used to.

MrNunez 2026-03-05 18:02

I'll take it! Throw that bad boy on Etsy... and send me link!

Squeakyduckquack 2026-03-05 18:03

Seconded!

PapaPapi33 2026-03-05 18:05

Send me one! Looks great.

captaingreyboosh 2026-03-05 18:13

Does this stop the lift master rattle too?

Top_Brilliant_5708 2026-03-05 18:14

Would love one for my 2026

Thebrianeffect 2026-03-05 18:15

I’m in.

Teemberland 2026-03-05 18:15

THIS!

BooDog47 2026-03-05 18:17

I double side taped mine to the back of the bottom left corner of my screen.

izzeo 2026-03-05 18:18

Bastard lol I was trying to make one of these, but I can’t get it to not slide around. I just finished making a back seat charging pad / storage container. Are you sharing this anywhere?

Thaneyeo 2026-03-05 18:18

Cool design. I just use double sided Velcro and attached it behind the monitor on the bottom left.

JohnGatling00 2026-03-05 18:19

I always have to open my Model Y's driver side window and hold my garage door opener outside to open my garage door with my LiftMaster remote. If I press the garage door opener from inside the Model Y, it does not register. Why is that? This is in stark contrast to the 4Runner I had just 6 months ago, in which I just pressed the garage door opener while it was clipped to the flip down sun shade and it opened my garage door. Same remote, same house, same garage door, different vehicle. Does the Tesla have a Faraday cage effect or something that stops garage door opener signals from getting out?

SgtRedeye7 2026-03-05 18:19

I’m in

chp110 2026-03-05 18:19

exactly the same for me... easy and quick.

Few-Advertising-8932 2026-03-05 18:19

Was just thinking about this very issue. I’d love one. How much would you retail for?

akolozvary 2026-03-05 18:20

That's awesome

Softswinging 2026-03-05 18:23

Why not just buy a used Tesla home link on eBay and install it? I did to 2 of my Teslas, super easy, takes 15 min. Worth it because it's so cool to have the garage door open/close automatically.

PintSizeMe 2026-03-05 18:25

Is homelink not even an option anymore?

Majestic_Ad5924 2026-03-05 18:26

Retrofitting the Homelink has been worth every penny for me.

NoaLink 2026-03-05 18:26

or mount the remote control behind your screen using velcro command strips and have it completely out of sight and out of the way.

SF-S31 2026-03-05 18:27

Had the same issue. Extended the antenna on the garage opener (using a wire) to the outside of the garage, and haven’t had any problems since. Total cost - less than a buck.

Successful-Cover5433 2026-03-05 18:28

nah, my garage doors are accepting incoming call from me to open the door, so it's just one click for me to dial it

Derbieshire 2026-03-05 18:29

That’s where mine is. I just used Velcro…

IllustriousSimple297 2026-03-05 18:33

I just put a piece of velcro to the back of my opener and stuck it on the carpet material in that same spot.

Pchemical 2026-03-05 18:33

I have used double tape to paste garage door remote at the back of the screen at bottom. It’s very seamless.

Disdatndathird 2026-03-05 18:35

Samsies

LazicusMaximus 2026-03-05 18:35

Same. Out of side and accessible

Mvtchwow 2026-03-05 18:36

This is just an ad post

Accomplished_Goat439 2026-03-05 18:37

I use the metal clip that comes with the remote along with a folded up napkin. And it still falls off the visor at random times. Where can I get this?

Heyyliz 2026-03-05 18:37

Yes please! I saw the image and instantly was like “I need that where’d they get that” for my model 3

JohnGatling00 2026-03-05 18:40

Pardon my ignorance. Just copper electrical wire, or specific antenna wire?

PsychologicalGoal927 2026-03-05 18:47

Yes

IPThereforeIAm 2026-03-05 18:48

Same! First place a thief will look, though

bc8306 2026-03-05 18:54

Mine is Velcro'd hidden under a kitchen cabinet at the back door. Had Homelink in my 2020 M3, but went with MyQ with Juniper. I love MyQ compared to Homelink.

SF-S31 2026-03-05 18:55

Just copper electrical wire

JohnGatling00 2026-03-05 18:55

Thank you stranger!

wtfredditacct 2026-03-05 18:57

You've got to order it separately. $350-ish installed, I'll just use my remote lol

PintSizeMe 2026-03-05 18:58

Ok, so price went up, I had to pay 199 for it when I got my M3 in 2018, and our MY from 2020.

aka_linskey 2026-03-05 19:02

They removed it? Dang, glad I got it when I did.

Schnitzhole 2026-03-05 19:02

Why did they remove homelink or do you just mean it’s a purchased option now? Anyways i put my clicker above where the phone charger is. Theres a nice void under the screen mount where the stock clip can have it sit and it never accidentally gets pressed there

RickS50 2026-03-05 19:03

Same, but with Velcro.

aRandomRedditor9000 2026-03-05 19:04

You can get them half price on ebay if youre willing to install it yourself, i dont think its worth it if youre replacing just one remote though

thomasabowden 2026-03-05 19:07

Is that hanging on the outside of the door pocket? Seems like it would pop off when I take things in and out of there, like my umbrella. Do you have that experience?

j_d_q 2026-03-05 19:13

Could you share the cad on thingiverse or similar

justchevyt 2026-03-05 19:13

Yes!!

wildmicrowolf 2026-03-05 19:13

I just use a 3M strip…

Draygoon2818 2026-03-05 19:16

I just use the MyQ app. When I get close to the house, it automatically opens, and when I leave, it automatically closes. Signed up for 5 years, and it was $180 I believe. Works great and doesn't require me to have a garage door opener attached to the car.

digiblur 2026-03-05 19:18

Nice! I keep saying I will stick mine on the back of the screen as I use it to close it. For opening I just use Teslamate and Home Assistant automations. Too chicken to do auto close and have it close on the car. Seen that happen before and nope.

Stanman77 2026-03-05 19:18

Same, but with 3M Vhb Sticky Adhesive Pads

horsehunghamsta 2026-03-05 19:24

Same, but with some used bubblegum I found under my desk in the second grade.

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-03-05 19:28

Just order an OEM Tesla Homelink module off of eBay ($200 last I checked) and install it yourself. There are YouTube videos on how to do it......easy peasy. I did this last summer......works like a charm.

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-03-05 19:29

Same, but with some left over roofing nails.

SP3NGL3R 2026-03-05 19:34

Yes. It's a single wire, usually blue hanging down from the opener mechanism. A bit of solid core networking wire (CAT) or phone wire would suffice.

dreamcastdc 2026-03-05 19:49

avebelle 2026-03-05 19:51

Nice. I velcro mine to the top of the windshield next hump.

FitterOver40 2026-03-05 19:55

I did the same in our new Juniper.

Capable_Fly_7422 2026-03-05 19:57

Or if you have a 3D print file?

theegeneral 2026-03-05 20:09

I was looking into this. If you go to their site , it’s very hard to find the actual pricing of the subscription for this. Maybe getting the app will be more clear. I also need to figure out if it’s compatible with my LiftMaster.

StormTrpr66 2026-03-05 20:10

I took the clip off, used some pliers to squeeze it together more tightly, put the clip back on, now it stays on the visor just fine. It rattles/buzzes though. Took me forever to figure out where the noise was coming from.

icy1007 2026-03-05 20:12

Model Y never came with Homelink, you can get it installed via a service center appointment. I just use MyQ.

sanctimoniousfsck 2026-03-05 20:13

Same!! Perfect place for it. And makes changing the battery easy.

StormTrpr66 2026-03-05 20:14

That requires a $5/mo subscription though doesn't it? I have the MyQ app on my phone for free and that works fine but I thought that using the car's MyQ app required a monthly subscription.

MrFC1000 2026-03-05 20:30

Same but I just imagine it’s there since I had nothing to hold it with

runwithscott 2026-03-05 20:31

Third!

lislejoyeuse 2026-03-05 20:40

It almost certainly is, it's like pairing a universal remote to a garage door. Super easy. If you want proper Tesla integration though you have to pay a subscription to my q

Puzzleheaded_Leg7722 2026-03-05 20:42

I just paid for the home link module. They installed for free and even set up my garage and gate remotes.

elthepenguin 2026-03-05 20:43

Same with my sword!

6packvern 2026-03-05 20:44

I think it's like $45 for a year. 30 day free trial. I don't love the idea of have a subscription for a button (or lack there of if you set it to auto open/close), but after the trial they sent a code SAVE20 that made it $36 for a year so I just did it.

goztepe2002 2026-03-05 20:48

i just velcro'd mine behind the screen.

Draygoon2818 2026-03-05 20:49

Draygoon2818 2026-03-05 21:06

0101001001001100 2026-03-05 21:06

I just use the metal clip it comes with and clip it to the inside of the door pocket, it’s literally the same isn’t it? What am I missing.

theegeneral 2026-03-05 21:08

Do you know if you HAVE to have the “Wi-Fi compatible garage opener” that they’ll send you for $1 shipping ? I’m just wondering if it works for free with just the app, no additional device , or will I need the device in order to control it from my Tesla

Hummelbuilt 2026-03-05 21:08

Great idea! Would this work on the Cybertruck?

Draygoon2818 2026-03-05 21:09

The good thing about it is if I get another car, I can immediately use this. With Homelink, you have to have it installed on your vehicle.

cdubec 2026-03-05 21:18

I’ve got mine clipped into the under screen drop down drawer. Fits perfectly and out of view too.

j_d_q 2026-03-05 21:20

I'm not paying an annual subscription to open my garage door

theegeneral 2026-03-05 21:22

Never thought I would either , but $3/month for a year subscription to just pull up to the house and have my garage open automatically is enticing me.

Intheknow636 2026-03-05 21:22

I do the same for the remote but in the storage compartment , still works while hidden there

Landon_Strata 2026-03-05 21:26

I velcro to the carpet in the door pocket

j_d_q 2026-03-05 21:26

The car already drives me home. I figured I can reach down and push a button. It doesn't pull into my garage for me anyway, parking is pretty much manual. It would be nice if it auto opened and closed. I'd pay a one time equipment cost, but subscription is crazy to me.

7venhigh 2026-03-05 21:50

Take my money

Whole-Beginning1362 2026-03-05 21:53

Same

nomis_nehc 2026-03-05 21:55

Yah, it’s $350 for mobile tech to come out, install, update config file and just have the convenience of it working. Worth it to me (wife’s car).

dmendro 2026-03-05 22:07

I’m, 10 cents of double sided tape does the trick.

KansasKing107 2026-03-05 22:25

I just used the hook side of the Velcro to stick mine inside the door pocket. Never has moved since installing it.

flyingdutchman7588 2026-03-05 22:26

This bothers me so much and one of the reasons why I don’t put it on the sun visor

SE_MI_CT 2026-03-05 22:33

I came here to post the exact same thing. I used the command strip Velcro so I could still take the remote if I needed to ever. You can't even see it, but you know where to reach and where to touch so it's perfect.

Jayman_007 2026-03-05 22:56

I'm confused. Where did Tesla remove home link from? Both my cars still have it and it works great. Did they stop selling it? Why would they do that? They had to make good money on that one.

tony310s 2026-03-05 22:58

dimitrirodis 2026-03-05 23:11

removed homelink??

kkittenring 2026-03-05 23:17

They removed homelink? This is news to me, I have it on my 2021. What an odd and bad decision.

Aytewun 2026-03-05 23:18

I did something like that originally then later just put it in the center console (I do have an organizer) In the center console I get great range. In the door pocket I had to be closer

kay860 2026-03-05 23:23

You can purchase a remote garage opener for a few dollars on Amazon that you can use your phone to open. That’s what I did.

COinParadise 2026-03-05 23:37

I bought it for $200 on eBay and did it myself for those looking for a project and to save some money. But I agree, pulling up to the neighborhood gate and then the garage and having them both open automatically is super nice.

aredeex 2026-03-05 23:45

General steps. Buy the home link module. Remove frunk tub, plug in the module, reboot car. Once confirmed working, reinstall the tub. Google or YouTube for the exact steps. Entire install takes 5-10 mins

bigceej 2026-03-06 03:20

You love paying a subscription to do the last thing that should have one, opening a door you own?

Epson234 2026-03-06 03:29

For this price, just get the MyQ subscription and it connects to the Tesla screen with geofencing.

jefedezorros 2026-03-06 03:57

I thought something had to be turned on by Tesla engineer. When I got my first Tesla I bought the module and they sent a ranger to install. After the physical install he had to hook his laptop up to my car and enable something. Not true?

mrchowmein 2026-03-06 04:05

Here are the steps for the Juniper. https://youtu.be/BwevAtgh-HY?si=7ARhA2Aa9og0kz0X I just had to enable via service mode.

jefedezorros 2026-03-06 04:25

MrNunez 2026-03-06 04:25

Will this work on a 2026 Model Y?

6100315 2026-03-06 04:26

I did double sided tape to the same spot

jefedezorros 2026-03-06 04:26

Guessing they mean they removed it as an included OEM feature which they did like back in 2018.

Bruceshadow 2026-03-06 04:35

do you need to pay a subscription?

Bruceshadow 2026-03-06 04:38

way better then handing over $23 for a $2 3d print.

Bruceshadow 2026-03-06 04:41

I can't believe people pay money to these subscription services. It's a garage door opener for fuck sake.

Bruceshadow 2026-03-06 04:45

will it be a deal when they decide to drop the service in 2 years? Or maybe then you can't open your garage cause the cloud AI servers are down?

Bruceshadow 2026-03-06 04:46

but it's only 10 cents a day to not have to push that button! /s

RuZZZZ1 2026-03-06 05:01

Thanks

Particular-Run7619 2026-03-06 05:05

Particular-Run7619 2026-03-06 05:07

What do you mean Tesla removed Homelink? Hasn’t it always been an optional extra?

ensoniq2k 2026-03-06 08:42

We've connected our garage to Home Assistant and can now control it via the built in browser. As long as they don't remove that as well we're save.

aka_linskey 2026-03-06 09:00

Oh, I didn’t know it was free at some point. I bought it a while back. 🤷‍♂️

RealEstateBandit_ 2026-03-06 10:09

I just drive through the garage door

Draygoon2818 2026-03-06 11:17

I can't believe why you're worried about what someone else wants to do. For me, it's cheap, it works, and I don't have to worry about putting a stupid button somewhere in my car. On top of that, the button could be stolen and used by a thief. This is more secure, for me, as I use pin to drive.

matttopotamus 2026-03-06 11:17

Works good. I live in the Georgia heat and after a brutal summer it sometimes melts the adhesive off. It was actually pretty messy, so I sucked it up and got MyQ

Draygoon2818 2026-03-06 11:19

To not have to worry about an ugly contraption I have to keep in my car, that could be stolen if someone breaks into it? Ya, it's absolutely worth it to me. I make more than enough money to be able to handle $36 a fkng year.

Best-Republic 2026-03-06 11:19

I use MyQ. It is a cheaper option than home link anyways.

Draygoon2818 2026-03-06 11:20

If it came to that, I have other ways I can open the door without having to keep a button inside my car. Why are you so worried about what I do? You do you. I'll worry about me.

thewashley 2026-03-06 11:20

+1, you should post this to one of the model sites (personally I prefer makerworld)

nextdoornicky 2026-03-06 12:46

I tried this but the adhesive melted from the summer heat !

Chaos744 2026-03-06 13:29

Paid $32k for my 2025 Model Y after my trade. Purchased MyQ for 10 years. This would be a sweet backup on the rare occasion when internet is wonky.

sdavis1987 2026-03-06 13:52

If you get down with 3D printing, this is the way: https://makerworld.com/en/models/23768-compact-garage-door-opener-for-tesla-model-3-y

jaredb03 2026-03-06 13:52

I bought some little keyfob looking garage door remotes off amazon after one of ours went out. I ended up designing and 3d printing a center console insert(out of TPU so no vibration or rattles) that holds the remote along with some other stuff like change holder and flashlight so nothing slides around. Nice clean design by the way.

John-Miami 2026-03-06 13:54

Looks nice. PLA+? I didn't want to pay Liftmaster, so I installed Tailwind. It opens and closes my gate, and garage door, automatically by GPS.

terps_boy 2026-03-06 13:58

I love this idea

Tacokolache 2026-03-06 14:08

Same but with FlexTape

jefedezorros 2026-03-06 14:33

They used to include the module on every new car. Then I think they made the realization that they were paying the license fee for homelink for every car sold when only a fraction of those would ever be used. Which makes a lot of sense.

MangoAtrocity 2026-03-06 14:40

I just slapped a Velcro strip on mine and stuck it to the carpet liner on the inside of the pocket.

6packvern 2026-03-06 15:12

If you have a wifi enabled garage door that supports myQ, you can use the app or car. If not, you'll need the device. I have one of them since I have a super old garage door opener. I bought it a few years ago for $20ish. It works great to control from your phone for free.

Low_Desk1822 2026-03-06 15:25

That’s odd.when I received my 2018 M3P it had the home link but wasn’t included, so I ordered one and the mobile Tesla unit came to install the one I ordered? But when he went to install it, there was already one there. Then I gave that to my wife and got a 2023 MYP and it already had one but HOMELINK wanted me to pay a monthly fee to use a feature already in my car? A subscription?? Nope. Just use my phone thanks!

spicyb12 2026-03-06 15:26

Same but with ez pass supplies

33kv 2026-03-06 15:40

3M VHB tape will hold inside of a hot car interior other double sided tape not so much in 30 min ill have something way cooler.

RickS50 2026-03-06 15:52

You weren't messing around! How do you change the battery?

Smooth-Exhibit 2026-03-06 15:59

This is the way

Bruceshadow 2026-03-06 16:24

Because you are perpetuating the "You will own nothing and be happy" world we are becoming and it sucks. Don't you want control over your own objects instead of some corporation you rent from?

chompmiester 2026-03-06 16:26

It’s lame that model x has this built in but y and 3 don’t

Bruceshadow 2026-03-06 16:27

oh oops, i'm mixing it up with the Q thing.

Fit_Driver_5564 2026-03-06 18:07

I don’t understand and can’t picture how

MattKozFF 2026-03-06 18:34

Why did Tesla remove Homelink??

JRskatr 2026-03-06 18:42

I would totally use something like this! Although I heard for security it’s safer to keep it in your glove box so someone can’t just break your window and get to your garage opener… but that’s definitely more convenient than opening the glove box each time!

cdubec 2026-03-06 18:49

I’ll take a picture and try to send it to you when I get out of work.

thefishhawk1 2026-03-06 19:00

get a Tailwind or Meross smart door adapter and it'll work with all your cars without having to use these single car specific solutions. You add it to the garage door opener, not the car, and then it uses your phone when connected to your car's bluetooth connection for auto open/close. or you can use the app. A lot cheaper than adding homelink to one car too.

ifelden 2026-03-06 19:09

You can buy the module, bracket and bolt for around 230 from service and install yourself. Did it on my 3 and Ys

JuiceAdditional23 2026-03-06 19:12

HomeKit? Meross garage door opener? “Hey dingus, open the garage door” from Apple Watch. Been 99% reliable. Odd occasional delays but get there in the end. I usually tell dipshit to open the garage about 300m from the house.

j_d_q 2026-03-06 20:15

We're upping our annual subscription to $90. "Well it's still less than a quarter a day..." When you have a working garage opener and all you have to do is tap it. I'll keep my $45 and extend my hand.

Particular-Run7619 2026-03-06 21:40

thats not good. you use your phone gps which is not accurate about the distance before your door. And it depends on the phone, what if I drive without a phone, or someone else connect to the car Bluetooth to play music. If I need to open an app, I'd rather to reach out to the remote opener.. so as I said, didnt find a good solution as smooth as homelink.

Bruceshadow 2026-03-06 22:20

yes, thank you. even better example then mine

thefishhawk1 2026-03-06 22:26

I've been using it for over 5 years and works perfectly. They must have some way to account for the gps because once you set it in the app, it opens every time I drive past the same house on my street. But yes, if you don't have your phone that's an issue, or if someone else is connected, but how often does either happen? The only time I use the app is to open/close it for a walk. Plus a smart opener has other advantages such as notifications if it's left open, night mode to auto close it, being able to check it from anywhere. I'd rather pay 80 bucks and have it work with all my current and future cars, have it integrate with my home automation, than a one off solution. But if it's not for you that's cool, it was just a suggestion since it didn't sound like you had heard of those.

Particular-Run7619 2026-03-06 23:12

thanks for the information. I had myq so when I stopped paying the subscription I did heard of and considered Merros. Plus I also have home assistant, so the intergration is a plus. I was thinking using ifttt to track gps + car Bluetooth connected as a condition. but my second thought was that I'd better use a dedicated sensor instead of adding workload to the phone.. it will keep tracking gps in the background, draining battery, and not accurate enough to measure the distance. If I drive bypass my house, it shouldnt open, but if I drive halfway of the driveway, it should start opening, so that when I reach the door it is fully opened. I really doubt a phone, which you can place anywhere in your car, can handle this scenario. But it sounds like your experience is different? could you share how the apps(assume Merros's own app) handle this? if it magically works I should reconsider the solution.

jasoraso 2026-03-06 23:20

This is the way

RRotellini 2026-03-07 00:04

I would love one but my opener is different. And I have a 2026.

pentak3 2026-03-07 00:46

Or you can use [https://www.garagedoorautomator.com/](https://www.garagedoorautomator.com/) \- it works with Genie doors & very cheap.

htdwps 2026-03-07 05:40

Velcro and stuck it inside door pocket

WorldTraveler886 2026-03-07 05:46

I use a 3M double side tape and attach it to the bottom back of the screen, work pretty well too.

Jumping_Jackalope3 2026-03-07 07:39

I’ve got a 2026 Model Y and I am 100% interested. I was really disappointed Tesla didn’t include Homelink. So many vehicles have the ability to program a garage door opener that I think it was a misstep. I’ve got new garage doors so the MyQ works and is an option, but I’m not interested in paying a monthly subscription fee. I’d rather just go with an option like this.

chr0me28 2026-03-07 13:07

Recurring fee, I'd rather pay one time for homelink

meteorchopin 2026-03-07 14:25

The master rattle sucks but just another to add to the list of rattles in the car.

MrNunez 2026-03-07 14:59

Ha! I thought maybe the lip of the holder was contoured specifically for the door edge since he was specific about the model y model years. Either way I just ordered. Can’t go wrong for $20!

Dry_Airport_8814 2026-03-07 15:14

Podrías compartir el archivo stl? Gracias

Echmotor_069 2026-03-07 17:27

Removed? My Juniper Launch Series came with it from Berlin factory. I used it everyday.

doug12398n 2026-03-07 18:13

We don’t all just pay the $49/year for the homelink subscription? Auto opens and closes the door for me I love it lol.

nomis_nehc 2026-03-07 19:41

How did you update the config? Just curious since all my vehicles already have it but a good to know.

nitroused911 2026-03-07 20:14

I have a remote exactly like the posters, and the metal clip would make it rattle on the visor that was driving me crazy. I took off the clip and set it on the charging pad that I don't use, works for me

Mundane_Engineer_550 2026-03-07 20:36

I just keep mines wedged in the visor 🤣, I just tap the visor when I pull up and garage opens and closes, I NEVER use my visor so it's perfect

Agreeable-Feeling-67 2026-03-07 21:39

Same but with jizz

0101001001001100 2026-03-08 05:56

Weird I have the same exact remote with a metal clip. No rattle on mine. I’ve clipped to both the visor and to the door pocket. I like it out of site on the door pocket, exactly as how OP has it in his pic, except I just use the metal clip it comes with which does the same exact thing.

subat0mic 2026-03-08 07:45

Same, exactly

CorkChop 2026-03-08 15:07

They didn’t “remove” it. You didn’t buy it.

Beszy 2026-03-08 15:18

I want this

MolarMike 2026-03-08 16:12

MiQ is free

bigceej 2026-03-08 23:20

No it’s not. https://www.myq.com/auto/tesla?srsltid=AfmBOoqJYhyRQtvMf5K7JUWO3AfekP0eqtRZndJywlmEOFAZNzHFEjrD
