I always have to open my Model Y's driver side window and hold my garage door opener outside to open my garage door with my LiftMaster remote. If I press the garage door opener from inside the Model Y, it does not register. Why is that? This is in stark contrast to the 4Runner I had just 6 months ago, in which I just pressed the garage door opener while it was clipped to the flip down sun shade and it opened my garage door. Same remote, same house, same garage door, different vehicle. Does the Tesla have a Faraday cage effect or something that stops garage door opener signals from getting out?

Why not just buy a used Tesla home link on eBay and install it? I did to 2 of my Teslas, super easy, takes 15 min. Worth it because it's so cool to have the garage door open/close automatically.

Had the same issue. Extended the antenna on the garage opener (using a wire) to the outside of the garage, and haven’t had any problems since. Total cost - less than a buck.

I just put a piece of velcro to the back of my opener and stuck it on the carpet material in that same spot.

Mine is Velcro'd hidden under a kitchen cabinet at the back door. Had Homelink in my 2020 M3, but went with MyQ with Juniper. I love MyQ compared to Homelink.

I just use the MyQ app. When I get close to the house, it automatically opens, and when I leave, it automatically closes. Signed up for 5 years, and it was $180 I believe. Works great and doesn't require me to have a garage door opener attached to the car.

Nice! I keep saying I will stick mine on the back of the screen as I use it to close it. For opening I just use Teslamate and Home Assistant automations. Too chicken to do auto close and have it close on the car. Seen that happen before and nope.

Yes. It's a single wire, usually blue hanging down from the opener mechanism. A bit of solid core networking wire (CAT) or phone wire would suffice.

I was looking into this. If you go to their site , it’s very hard to find the actual pricing of the subscription for this. Maybe getting the app will be more clear. I also need to figure out if it’s compatible with my LiftMaster.

I took the clip off, used some pliers to squeeze it together more tightly, put the clip back on, now it stays on the visor just fine. It rattles/buzzes though. Took me forever to figure out where the noise was coming from.

Model Y never came with Homelink, you can get it installed via a service center appointment. I just use MyQ.

I think it's like $45 for a year. 30 day free trial. I don't love the idea of have a subscription for a button (or lack there of if you set it to auto open/close), but after the trial they sent a code SAVE20 that made it $36 for a year so I just did it.

The good thing about it is if I get another car, I can immediately use this. With Homelink, you have to have it installed on your vehicle.

The car already drives me home. I figured I can reach down and push a button. It doesn't pull into my garage for me anyway, parking is pretty much manual. It would be nice if it auto opened and closed. I'd pay a one time equipment cost, but subscription is crazy to me.

I came here to post the exact same thing. I used the command strip Velcro so I could still take the remote if I needed to ever. You can't even see it, but you know where to reach and where to touch so it's perfect.

I'm confused. Where did Tesla remove home link from? Both my cars still have it and it works great. Did they stop selling it? Why would they do that? They had to make good money on that one.

I did something like that originally then later just put it in the center console (I do have an organizer) In the center console I get great range. In the door pocket I had to be closer

You can purchase a remote garage opener for a few dollars on Amazon that you can use your phone to open. That’s what I did.

I bought it for $200 on eBay and did it myself for those looking for a project and to save some money. But I agree, pulling up to the neighborhood gate and then the garage and having them both open automatically is super nice.

I have a Chamberlain garage door opener that has WiFi ability and works with my MyQ app on my phone. I’m not sure if you need that or not.

Well, it’s a cheap subscription and it can easily follow me from vehicle to vehicle, with no equipment needed.

I just purchased a HomeLink off eBay and pulled the frunk and plugged it into the wiring harness still in the frunk area. Works like a charm. And was less than $100 for the upgrade.

General steps. Buy the home link module. Remove frunk tub, plug in the module, reboot car. Once confirmed working, reinstall the tub. Google or YouTube for the exact steps. Entire install takes 5-10 mins

I thought something had to be turned on by Tesla engineer. When I got my first Tesla I bought the module and they sent a ranger to install. After the physical install he had to hook his laptop up to my car and enable something. Not true?

I stopped myq service when it failed twice, I arrived home finding the door was open...then I installed homelink myself. I like the convenience, though it wad 200+ dollars in total

We've connected our garage to Home Assistant and can now control it via the built in browser. As long as they don't remove that as well we're save.

I can't believe why you're worried about what someone else wants to do. For me, it's cheap, it works, and I don't have to worry about putting a stupid button somewhere in my car. On top of that, the button could be stolen and used by a thief. This is more secure, for me, as I use pin to drive.

I bought some little keyfob looking garage door remotes off amazon after one of ours went out. I ended up designing and 3d printing a center console insert(out of TPU so no vibration or rattles) that holds the remote along with some other stuff like change holder and flashlight so nothing slides around. Nice clean design by the way.

They used to include the module on every new car. Then I think they made the realization that they were paying the license fee for homelink for every car sold when only a fraction of those would ever be used. Which makes a lot of sense.

If you have a wifi enabled garage door that supports myQ, you can use the app or car. If not, you'll need the device. I have one of them since I have a super old garage door opener. I bought it a few years ago for $20ish. It works great to control from your phone for free.

That’s odd.when I received my 2018 M3P it had the home link but wasn’t included, so I ordered one and the mobile Tesla unit came to install the one I ordered? But when he went to install it, there was already one there. Then I gave that to my wife and got a 2023 MYP and it already had one but HOMELINK wanted me to pay a monthly fee to use a feature already in my car? A subscription?? Nope. Just use my phone thanks!

I would totally use something like this! Although I heard for security it’s safer to keep it in your glove box so someone can’t just break your window and get to your garage opener… but that’s definitely more convenient than opening the glove box each time!

get a Tailwind or Meross smart door adapter and it'll work with all your cars without having to use these single car specific solutions. You add it to the garage door opener, not the car, and then it uses your phone when connected to your car's bluetooth connection for auto open/close. or you can use the app. A lot cheaper than adding homelink to one car too.

You can buy the module, bracket and bolt for around 230 from service and install yourself. Did it on my 3 and Ys

HomeKit? Meross garage door opener? “Hey dingus, open the garage door” from Apple Watch. Been 99% reliable. Odd occasional delays but get there in the end. I usually tell dipshit to open the garage about 300m from the house.

We're upping our annual subscription to $90. "Well it's still less than a quarter a day..." When you have a working garage opener and all you have to do is tap it. I'll keep my $45 and extend my hand.

thats not good. you use your phone gps which is not accurate about the distance before your door. And it depends on the phone, what if I drive without a phone, or someone else connect to the car Bluetooth to play music. If I need to open an app, I'd rather to reach out to the remote opener.. so as I said, didnt find a good solution as smooth as homelink.

I've been using it for over 5 years and works perfectly. They must have some way to account for the gps because once you set it in the app, it opens every time I drive past the same house on my street. But yes, if you don't have your phone that's an issue, or if someone else is connected, but how often does either happen? The only time I use the app is to open/close it for a walk. Plus a smart opener has other advantages such as notifications if it's left open, night mode to auto close it, being able to check it from anywhere. I'd rather pay 80 bucks and have it work with all my current and future cars, have it integrate with my home automation, than a one off solution. But if it's not for you that's cool, it was just a suggestion since it didn't sound like you had heard of those.

thanks for the information. I had myq so when I stopped paying the subscription I did heard of and considered Merros. Plus I also have home assistant, so the intergration is a plus. I was thinking using ifttt to track gps + car Bluetooth connected as a condition. but my second thought was that I'd better use a dedicated sensor instead of adding workload to the phone.. it will keep tracking gps in the background, draining battery, and not accurate enough to measure the distance. If I drive bypass my house, it shouldnt open, but if I drive halfway of the driveway, it should start opening, so that when I reach the door it is fully opened. I really doubt a phone, which you can place anywhere in your car, can handle this scenario. But it sounds like your experience is different? could you share how the apps(assume Merros's own app) handle this? if it magically works I should reconsider the solution.

I’ve got a 2026 Model Y and I am 100% interested. I was really disappointed Tesla didn’t include Homelink. So many vehicles have the ability to program a garage door opener that I think it was a misstep. I’ve got new garage doors so the MyQ works and is an option, but I’m not interested in paying a monthly subscription fee. I’d rather just go with an option like this.

I have a remote exactly like the posters, and the metal clip would make it rattle on the visor that was driving me crazy. I took off the clip and set it on the charging pad that I don't use, works for me

I just keep mines wedged in the visor 🤣, I just tap the visor when I pull up and garage opens and closes, I NEVER use my visor so it's perfect
