Who else has an older Model Y? How’s it holding up?

Initial_Cycle_8344 | 2026-03-05 16:54 | 52 views

I’ve had mine since late 2020, 115,000 miles on the car. Battery only charges to 250 miles now. Curious how everyone else’s cars are doing? I live in the north east

2021 MYP here. Bought new in March of ‘21. $74k with FSD. It’s been a really solid car for wife and me but since we’re retired, we’ve only put 28k miles on her by now. We’ve taken a couple of really long trips from San Diego to Oregon and both trips went really well. It has been a great long hauler car. We flip and manage properties and the space plus the hatchback have made it a great utilitarian vehicle. The only real problem was a breakdown in a store parking lot; car was towed to the SC and the rear drive unit inverter and 12v battery were replaced under warranty (8857 miles). I haven’t done the battery test yet. I swapped out the staggered 21” Ubertine wheels to non-staggered 19”s and the ride improved considerably. And I can now rotate the tires. Other than the HW3 only supports FSD v12, not a lot of complaints. But I do feel I was sold a bill of goods when fully autonomous driving was promised for my extra $10,000. I kind of feel abandoned in that respect.

I've got a 2021 LR that I've had since the very end of 2020 with about 70,000 miles. I think I can get about 275 miles on a full charge or so, but I haven't done the battery test. I'm going to replace the suspension on it this spring but that's about it so far.

Zestyclose_Paint3922 2026-03-05 18:10

What was the original range on the battery?

PreacherSquat 2026-03-05 18:23

2021 myp. original 12v low voltage battery lasted up until recent. control arms had torn bushings that i replaced. hv battery seems intact for 60k. the only annoying thing is the plastic part of the driver seat where the adjustment controls are have cracked so it's hanging loosely.

insearchof1230 2026-03-05 18:48

2021 MYLR here. A little more than 50k on the odometer with no issues *knock on wood*. Full charge gets me about 293mi last time I went to 100%. I’m also in the North East.

Traditional_Ask262 2026-03-05 18:57

We have a 2020 Model Y LR AWD with 95k miles on it. Runs great! No problems so far.

Kind-Teach-1549 2026-03-05 19:04

2020 MYLR, 160K miles. Charges to 254 at 100%. All control arms, rear knuckles are shot since last 10k miles or so. Planning to fix it soon. But overall it's holding up pretty well. I plan to drive it as long as it can last. I found battery replacement is cheap in my area (about 5k with installation in Florida). So i don't see myself jumping to another car anytime soon.

drdom12000 2026-03-05 19:08

2020 MYLR 120k km Still running great after repairs but starting to wonder what will happen next. Replaced computer at about 100k Front wheel bearing at 115k Oil pump in the front drive unit replaced at 110k(under warranty save for the $200 connector cable) New warning has sporadically shown up about something or other (can’t recall why it’s for) but it’s not shown up in a while now. Fingers crossed! Nothing between 2020 and 2025 though lol

collegedreads 2026-03-05 19:26

2020 MY with 136,000 miles. Just picked up a 2026 MYP today in addition. I absolutely love both cars but holy hell have they upped the quality in 5 years. NVH/fit and finish have really improved. Sound system is still better in the OG tho.

buddhac2is 2026-03-05 19:38

Hv battery died at 86k but was covered under warranty.

thebluick 2026-03-05 19:43

Sep 2020 Model Y with 32k miles. car is still doing great. 224 miles of range when I charge to 80%. on 2nd set of tires, 3rd windshield, but that's all. Ride quality, rattle and road noise is as awful as its ever been and kids hate it when we take my car instead of my wife's Lincoln. Planning to keep my Y for 2-3 more years then switch to a Rivian R2 or R3

Penny__Packer 2026-03-05 20:06

I’ve already put 75k mi on my July ‘23 build lol

Snoo85977 2026-03-05 20:15

2020 YLR bought it used with 86k miles, like new. Has 138,284 miles now. Still running great. Suspension is a bit hard but I’m used to it.

thebluick 2026-03-05 20:25

I pretty much only drive to work which is only like 10 miles.

Influxlve 2026-03-05 20:45

2022 MYP with 115,000 miles going strong so far only real maintenance has been the tires really. Will drive this till it’s time to trade for the juniper eventually.

akidesir 2026-03-05 21:27

2022 model Y, 44k km one battery replacement at 42k about 4 months ago. New replacement battery showing 515km range. Pretty happy but the rough hard suspension definately getting to me

New_Asparagus_3140 2026-03-05 21:38

2023 with 45k miles on it. No real issues except the annoying water in the cabin when the windows are open/windshield wiper issue. The depreciation was a bit of a Shock as I only drove Toyotas before I bought the model y.

bighoss1025 2026-03-05 22:06

21 myp here too. Same issue with the driver seat. About 43k miles.

dannyl1017 2026-03-05 22:11

2021, 26,249 miles, battery shows 261 miles at 90%.

Penny__Packer 2026-03-05 22:32

I can’t imagine spending so much on a car I’d barely drive, but I’m sure you’re in a much better financial state than I am if you’re fine doing so, so more power to ya!

bokworski 2026-03-05 22:33

Pickup on October 2020, I guess it’s a ‘21? 80k miles. List of things that needed to be addressed: -heat pump. Failed 2k miles after warranty -rear axle leaking grease ( fixed under warranty) -front passenger restraint system. Changed OCS filter. - new 12V battery @ 62k miles -B pillar mysteriously cracked. Not sure if from a rock on freeway. I’ve also swapped out to the 2022/2023 suspension cause i couldn’t stand the rough ride. Seems better, but still not soft enough. Comparing this to other cars that I’ve own, my 2013 Prius only requires oil changes.

mykalh78 2026-03-05 22:52

2023 Model Y with 210,000kms on it. Noticed some degradation in the winter, when commuting to work I would reach with 69% left. I get 62% now. But it could be the cold winter in Toronto that caused this. With the weather warming up, I see the range coming back.

Initial_Cycle_8344 2026-03-05 23:15

Pretty good! Thanks for sharing

Wasabulu 2026-03-05 23:32

we will sue the s\*\*T out of tesla to make us hw3 owners whole!

DasArtmab 2026-03-05 23:36

2021 MYLR 100k 273 mi range. Replace main processor and right control arm. I should not I beat the hell out of this car. A lot of DC charging and a lot of 100% AC charging, as I mainly use it for roadtrips. This thing is bulletproof

quentech 2026-03-06 00:15

> 160K miles. All control arms, rear knuckles are shot.. it's holding up pretty well Bro, that is not holding up pretty well. Maybe for a Tesla, but not for any other car, it is not normal for a pile of control arms and knuckles to be shot @ 150k miles

PatMagroin100 2026-03-06 00:49

Early 2020 Y LR. 85k miles. Holding up great. I get about 265 full charge. Mid-Atlantic

Kind-Teach-1549 2026-03-06 00:51

M3 and MY is known to have this control arm issue. I have seen those bushings failing at less than 30k miles. It also depends on driving habits. I've lowered my car(drove about 50k in Florida) on coilovers and before lowering i had increased the height on same coilovers to drive in the countryside in upstate NY (drove about 70k). I'd not compare it with camry or rav4 ofc or any other hondas. But i think it's pretty impressive that these control arms survived this much of abuse.

Coffeshop_Inspector 2026-03-06 00:53

2023 Y LR. 65k miles and im down to 295 miles at 100% from 330. No issues so far!

StopBeingABot 2026-03-06 01:16

Test drove a 2024 MY long range as I'm considering a 2024 MY performance. I did not expect the suspension to be so stiff. I felt EVERY small crack in the road. The performance, I've read, is even worse. Don't know if I can deal with that long term, and I really really want a MY performance

hillbilly-thomist 2026-03-06 02:03

2021 SR, bought it with 72k miles on it in Oct 2025, now at 88k (commuting and Uber/Lyft). Battery degradation was 18% when I bought it, now at 21.5%, I can’t get about 200 miles at 100%. Hoping for a catastrophic battery failure in the next 12k miles, but I’ve been budgeting for an eventual out of warranty replacement. I plan to drive this thing into the ground.

Veritas_Gt3 2026-03-06 02:27

If you get under most cars @ 100k miles they have worn control arm bushings + worn suspension components. These are wear items. I’ve replaced control arms on my Porsches, BMWs and Toyotas. Now if his car can’t steer due to worn control arms that’s another issue.

quentech 2026-03-06 04:06

> M3 and MY is known to have this control arm issue. I'm aware, hence: > Maybe for a Tesla

Waste_Curve994 2026-03-06 04:11

2020, 45K miles. Holding up great, shreds tires, worst suspension I’ve ever experienced but great commuter car. Will never buy another one with subscription autopilot.

CT_7 2026-03-06 04:17

What shop and area for a $5k battery? Sounds like a great deal

Kind-Teach-1549 2026-03-06 04:22

Partacar in Hollywood. It's a bit above 5k. But you can always negotiate in person.

dcun202 2026-03-06 04:33

2021 YLR bought it new. 165k miles. Commute about 100 miles a day for work its whole life. Charged at home majority of the time with the tesla wall charger. Battery charge to about 245 at 100%. Only maintenance was the 12v battery replacement and will be going in next week for my rear seat squeaking issue. Other than that for maintenance its only been tires for my yearly maintenance. Car still runs great besides my squeaking noise.

NioRockets 2026-03-06 04:35

2020 MY just hit 171k miles, car been squeaking from the front since about 120k miles. Took to service center last week they said suspension is shot 8k to replace it… trading it in and ordered a new one. Hoping the new MY is better and lasts longer. Pretty much Only real issue I’ve had

RezzaBuh 2026-03-06 04:43

Not very well 😞. I'm going to pick up my '22 MIC TMY LR with 82k kms from the body shop right now. My wife had a minor accident. Well, damage worth of almost $20k!!! New steering, new suspension... Otherwise no issues. Other then the upper links replaced under warranty at 80k kms. So holding up very well!

Recent_Screen1385 2026-03-06 05:41

2023 MYP - 82k Replaced my tires once No issues- 303mi at 100% but I have fun driving so I think its lower based off my driving style Haven't done battery test Best car I've owned

hullski 2026-03-06 05:56

Did you replace the windshield with oem? I need to replace mine but kind of hesitant to go with Tesla since it’s double the price of after market.

mrgalkon 2026-03-06 06:02

I did one a few years back and it was not OEM. I’ve not had any issues.

mrgalkon 2026-03-06 06:12

2021 MYLR. Got it new. Just over 50k miles now. FSD enabled. Battery charges to 270-280 miles at 100% these days. In first couple of years: - Windshield replacement in 2022 from a crack that formed - HEPA retrofitting for latest biodefense support - Multiple flat tires / tire replacements ($400+ per tire) In the last month: - Front motor stopped working randomly. Tesla replaced it for $100 (labor). - Less than a week later the main computer stopped working mid drive. Car still drove fine but nav, cameras, sensors, etc all went offline. Tesla replaced free of charge. Other notes: - Big hit to range in the cold when you don’t have a garage. Especially if no home charging available. - Tesla roadside service in Colorado has been goated. Quick and more helpful and responsive than AAA. - Tesla service center near us usually gives us loaners which is sooo nice when something does happen. Overall very happy with it. Whenever I have to use another car I am so happy to be back in the Tesla.

OLVANstorm 2026-03-06 06:36

NW here. 2020 Y. 52k miles. Still awesome! Charges to 293. Still looks new and drives like a dream.

Dizzy-Woodpecker7879 2026-03-06 10:50

2023 MY LR AWD is fine. I always fastcharge and regularly to 100%. Lost abou 10% battery. Still reaching 500km. 130.000km. Had one issue with wheel support arm, thats it. Just tyres changes.

CrappyDragon 2026-03-06 10:56

2021 Model Y long range checking in. 140k miles. 100% range shows at 277 miles Had to replace the left fender camera a while back. Did it myself. Was not that bad. Recently started having abnormally loud noise from rear motor assembly. Noise changes pitch based on speed. Was hoping it was bearings but Tesla confirmed the rear motor would need replacement. Estimate is $4.5k Debating fixing it and driving the car to oblivion or Trying to trade it in for a 2026 while the rates are good. Honestly if not for the motor, I'd keep the car as long as it could drive me but at a roughly $10k value, a motor replacement is a hard pill to swallow. Then again, so is autopilot being removed on the newer models.

thewashley 2026-03-06 11:15

Fingers crossed us HW3 FSD owners eventually get a hardware upgrade!

Wraith_Kink 2026-03-06 11:52

I have a 24MYP, I will need back surgery in my mid 40s if I daily drive this but car go zoom when you hit the pedal, never gets old despite that being common opinion

upcycledmeat 2026-03-06 12:07

You can zip tie it as a cheap fix. There are videos on YouTube if you are interested.

Chris_Reddit_PHX 2026-03-06 12:13

Can I ask, what was the cost of the new suspension?

thebluick 2026-03-06 12:31

I used tesla, but insurance paid for it

Hough_G_Rection 2026-03-06 13:29

What year was your model y if you don’t mind me asking?

Solaphobe 2026-03-06 13:35

2021 MY and 2018 M3 and both are holding up really well, both used as our daily drivers. Neither are high mileage as our commutes are fairly reasonable at 10 miles and 15 miles one way each. We've taken both cars on a couple long trips - the Y is much more comfortable than the 3. Neither has a plush ride, but the ride is definitely reasonable for a couple of sporty cars.

ScaryTerrySucks 2026-03-06 14:21

What? Most cars will need bushings and suspension components at that mileage. They are wear parts

ScaryTerrySucks 2026-03-06 14:22

Control arms are not part of the steering system

buddhac2is 2026-03-06 14:23

2021

StopBeingABot 2026-03-06 14:31

Man it's that bad? Pennsylvania roads are THE WORST. I really really want the instant power and zoom, and I get the stiffer sporty suspension for performance not comfort.. but man what a difficult decision lol Ps I'm an adrenaline junkie I race super sport motorcycles at the track, some days at the track I see a guy running a plaid. I can't afford a plaid and have a family so I need the extra room, the MYP seems like a good fit for me, but I also can't stand potholes

jlstphns 2026-03-06 14:46

Why don't you use your autonomous driving? I love it.

Sfkn123 2026-03-06 14:46

This really puts into perspective of how everyone thinks it's just a battery replacement when these cars die, but they completely forget that EVs still have motors.

Sfkn123 2026-03-06 14:48

Haha if you think the '24 LR is bad, you should have tried an older MY build. I had a March 2022 one and it rode like a Honda Civic on cut springs and blown shocks. Recently upgraded to a Model 3 Performance and it's night and day.

TJayClark 2026-03-06 16:03

June 2021 MYLR in the south here: Amazing car, just crossed 100,000mi At 34k I had a HV battery replaced under warranty. Other than that, control arms, 2 steering wheels, and the LTE chip and low voltage battery have been all the service I’ve had. Total spend is about $3,300 on service.

PracticlySpeaking 2026-03-06 16:49

2020 MYLR with just under 45k on it. A full charge is somewhere around 280 miles. I have destroyed multiple sets of rim protectors while parallel parking in the city — this car has deceptively wide hips! The 'car computer' got stuck in a boot loop after a failed software update last summer, and a $2,300 replacement was all the SC had to offer. That made me not a happy camper. So far the notorious AC compressor has not grenaded, and I keep hoping it was already replaced. (Being the second owner, Tesla SC refuse to share any service history with me.)

No-College4612 2026-03-06 17:54

160k miles on any car suspension is gonna start going. Good thing is suspension is pretty straight forward on these. Doesn't have to be done by Tesla

CR8VJUC 2026-03-06 18:41

FSD is not automatous. V14 is getting there, according to so many on here that have HW4 and use it daily. Apparently they love it. But since mine is a 2021 model with HW3, it’s nowhere near as good. I don’t trust it, really. You do realize the definition of automatous? Level 5 autonomous driving represents the highest level of vehicle automation, where a car can operate entirely on its own under all conditions and on any road, without needing a human driver or controls like pedals and steering wheels. These systems are fully autonomous and do not require human interaction or supervision. We are a loooooong way from that my friend.

huggsypenguinpal 2026-03-06 21:40

2020 MYLR with about 73k miles. I'm estimating about 265mi displayed range but not sure as I haven't charged to 100% in a while. Had the 12V replaced in 2024 when it showed me an error. Someone rear ended me a year ago or so and sadly the replacement hatch doesn't sound the same when closing. Otherwise, the car is doing well!

Wraith_Kink 2026-03-06 23:19

Hahaha, I mean it’s not the best but as a fellow junkie, I bearable for the experience, I think I need another comfier car eventually, happy with it now

Tight-Permit351 2026-03-06 23:54

Rattle box 2024, I’ve had so many issues with a new car. Never again.

CrappyDragon 2026-03-07 00:15

Yeah with all the obsession over range and battery expense, my primary concern was the battery as well. I did not expect a motor to failure but you're right, They are cars and can have failures like anything else. The unfortunate part is when something fails it's likely unrepairable and needs replacement. No rebuilds and not much resources for 2nd hand or aftermarket. The car has saved me significantly on gas over the years so I try to keep it in perspectiv though.

Mammoth-Grand137 2026-03-07 03:28

2020 Model Y, sub 28k VIN. At 129k miles now. Car charges to 273 miles at 100%. I've had the 12v battery replaced once. Tesla replaced the front right control arm due to squeaks under warranty. The FSD computer was replaced at 109k miles for $1,600. Front motor oil pump failed (my fault likely) and was replaced for around $500 at 125k miles. The ride continues to be very rough or 'sporty'. The tires all wear on the inside more, even though I've had multiple alignments done and it's "within specifications". Getting 40k miles out of a set of tires has been difficult. My driveway exits onto a rural highway, other than 5 directional changes, FSD was certainly an expensive choice to have made.

DrSendy 2026-03-07 11:19

"I live in the north east" ... of.... where?

Every-Category-5889 2026-03-07 13:14

that would be the NE united states when not stated otherwise. cold winters, pot holes to consider

PSG1JOHN 2026-03-07 21:26

2023 at over 31k miles full charge at 287miles only thing I had done to it is change tires because of a side wall nail.

Aggravating-Sea6995 2026-03-07 21:49

2021 MY LR, 174,000 miles. Battery degradation about 77% now. Left upper control arm begins has some noise even after ai re-grease it.

Puzzleheaded-Cow-199 2026-03-07 22:29

I have a ‘22 LR FSD ($10k) that I bought a few weeks before the big ‘ol price drop. 24,000 miles- mostly neighbor carpool. Probably a dozen 250 mile round trips. I’ve lost so much money on it I feel like I have to drive it until it melts into the earth. It runs out of warranty in a few months and I’m curious what I should try to get worked on before that happens. It’s never had a very smooth ride and passengers don’t enjoy the bumpiness. The battery has already been replaced after it randomly stopped charging one day. The AC required service once. Otherwise it’s just been tires…and the interior looks long in the tooth but it’s not garage kept plus we have kids and I don’t question it much. I wonder if/when/what is going to start breaking on it. If I had it my way I would take the Tesla tech & screen and put into a Tahoe.

systemr99 2026-03-08 00:02

2022 MYLR \~29K and 290mi at 100% charge warranty is up later this month and I'm getting telsa to replace the front lower lateral link and compliance arms on both sides as the bushings are all torn. Not sure how long I will keep the car, thinking about maybe a R2 when it comes out (have a deposit down). Conflicted since its a HW3 car, other main complaint is how bad the suspension is but test drove one w/ juniper shocks recently and it's a pretty big difference in mellowing out the harshness and am thinking of doing that and keeping it longer.

RiggerLFW 2026-03-09 02:37

Did they replace with a rebuilt pack? Or new? Was there a big range difference after?

buddhac2is 2026-03-09 02:40

It was a refurbish pack. When my car went down I was getting 270 miles at full 100% charge. After my battery replacement I go back to 330 miles at full charge.
