Possible to delay pickup?

distracteds0ul | 2026-03-05 15:05 | 6 views

I placed an order last night believing the estimated delivery to be 3-5 weeks as stated on their site. My lease is up in May and was hoping to get the Model Y sometime closer to end of April since I don’t really want to make 2 payments for cars and insurance for 2 months. I got a notice this morning that stated I could schedule my delivery date for March 13-18. Anyone have experience with delaying a delivery for a few weeks?

Yea I did it for like 5 weeks I think. Just messaged through the app and was able to delay

When was that time frame though? Tesla operates by financial quarters and Q1 ends March 31 so they could potentially give the VIN (car) to someone else to guarantee/boost their delivery numbers. If that ends up being the case for OP, then they'll prob place his order on hold, release his current VIN (car), and then he may get another VIN (car) later in the future.

Yea mine was from July to mid August.

In my case, they held hard to my pickup date…I had to change travel plans, or they would put Vin back into inventory 😑. Good luck 👍

What’s it mean when the vin goes back into inventory? Can’t they just issue me a new vin 3-5 weeks later?

They threatened me to release the vehicle if I didn’t pick it up during the dates they gave me

They said that they recommend I cancel this order and order closer to end of April and they would credit and reapply the order fee to the new order. My question now is whether I’d need to reapply for financing if I did that, not really interested in having that many hard credit checks within this short of time.

You were correct. 👍 Latest I can pick up is March 22nd. Originally told me the 31st, and then told me that wasn’t possible either. Or they could also put my order on hold and then give me a new vin at a later time which I believe I’ll then have to reapply for financing.

I had the same happen to me. The website literally told me 2-3 weeks before delivery when I ordered. In two days I already got a VIN and was prompted to schedule delivery. I wasn’t ready to take the car yet at the time. They allowed me to do a 14 day hold on my order and you must release the hold before the 14 days are up or else your order is canceled and you lose your order fee. I had to forfeit my current VIN. I lifted the hold after the 14 days and got a new VIN assigned in two days. I scheduled my delivery a few days after so I ended up getting the car a little over two weeks after I ordered

You won't get the promo rate unless Tesla extends it or offers it again after Q1 (March 31st). The point of the APR promos is to get people to order and take delivery of cars before the Quarter ends so they can report better numbers and their stock price goes up. It all depends what Tesla does as we get closer to March 31. When it gets closer to the end of financial quarters, then Tesla becomes hard to work with and not helpful.

Yep- loose “that” Vin, and start the wait all over again. But this was a couple of years ago, looks like they may be more flexible today.
