First Road Trip - Schedule Charging to 100% Question

Big_Acanthaceae4891 | 2026-03-04 23:20 | 3 views

Hi there –   I've been a proud Tesla Model Y owner for nearly three months now and have mostly been driving locally, covering almost 1500 miles so far. To share a bit about my home charging setup, I installed a Level 2 Tesla wall charger just two weeks after getting the car. I follow the ABC rule by keeping it plugged in and ensuring the battery stays charged to 80%. I have a daily charging routine from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, charging at 32 amps, and by the time I wake up, the car is usually already charged to 80%. From there, I'm all set and ready to drive to work.   I'm excited about my first road trip! I plan to fully charge my Tesla to 100% because I need to hit the road right afterward, but I wonder—how do I figure out the best time to do that? My trip starts Friday at 6:00 PM here in Florida, so I’ll need the car fully charged to 100% by then. So by Friday morning, I expect the battery to be around 80%. How can I schedule charging to 100% so the car is ready to go when I leave?   Any tips to help me time this perfectly would be greatly appreciated!   Thank you in advance -

Just start charging from 80-100% around noon(possibly even later). If it sits at a 100% for a couple hours the car doesn't explode I promise.

A few hours at 100% is not going to cause any problems but if you really want to time it better, assume you will get 20% more charge in 3.5 hours.

NiceBench9100 2026-03-04 23:27

You’re overthinking it dude. Just charge to 100% whenever is convenient for you.

On Friday, in the App you can swipe the charge limit up to 100%. No need to be overly particular about when you hit 100%: sitting at 100% for a few hours is no big deal

The_Soldiet 2026-03-04 23:37

Set end charging time, remove the start charging time and set the charge limit to 100%.

RevolutionaryBug8938 2026-03-04 23:39

Set the limit to 100%, then lower the amps until the time remaining to charge limit lines up with the time you’re set to leave.

Honestly after taking a few road trips it's not even worth charged to 100% honestly maybe you get one less stop maybe you get no less stops

PTX2010 2026-03-04 23:46

Schedule in the app to end your charge at 100% at the time you plan to depart. The car will automatically start the charge accordingly. That said, charging to 100% periodically won’t hurt the battery in any significant way.

As a couple of people have said, don’t set a start time. Set a max charge level and an end time. The system will figure out when to start so that it hits the desired end charge level prior to the set end time. As it turns out, I also set mine to 80%, with only an end time set for my morning commute. Tomorrow I’ll be going an extra 120 miles or so, therefore I’ve set tonight’s charge to 100%.

You’re doing more harm keeping your car at 80% all the time than you will be by charging to 100% for a few hours. But in this case just keep in mind that the charging slows down a lot for the last few percentage points. So give yourself time to get to 100%. Also, you’re fine charging to 80% every day. My point was just that keeping your car at a high state of charge like 80% is more harmful than just keeping your car at 100% for a few hours once. But neither is all that harmful except that if you don’t need 80% you’ll have less degradation if you charged consistently to a lower state of charge.

When it completes at 80% in the morning, set the charge limit to 100% and it’ll show however many hours it needs to gain the extra 20%. There’s a “stop charging” button on the bottom left corner of the grey box in the app, just click that and it will turn to “start charging” then just start the charge however many hours it said it needed to charge.

sbddude 2026-03-05 00:30

The day before leaving, raise the limit from 80 to 100 percent, then lower charge amps so that charging completes in the morning when you want to leave.

Striking-Virus-7819 2026-03-05 00:44

Just charge it to 100. You’re not going to hurt it if it sits a few hours. Or shit even a few days. Charge to what you need when you need it and forget about it.

Ok-Measurement2476 2026-03-05 00:51

You can do scheduled departure so it’ll start charging to finish at the leave time. If I’m going to 100% I normally do it 30-45 minutes earlier than departure cause it seems to drag in the 98,99,100% range.

KansasKing107 2026-03-05 01:00

This is the answer. No need to fuss around with trying to time it when the car will do it for you.

AngleFun1664 2026-03-05 01:08

This here. People really like to overthink it. It’s a car, just use it like a car.

808_GhostRider 2026-03-05 01:30

FWIW, here’s what I do if going on a roadtrip. Set my car to charge to 80% during super off peak (ends at 6am), then set my car to end charging by the time I want to leave at 100%SoC. This way you’re not paying peak rates for the majority of the charge

jefedezorros 2026-03-05 01:44

I scrolled through all of the answers to find this one and this is the right answer. The efficiency at 100% is so poor that I don’t think it even extends your range. Unless you can actually reach your destination on a single charge, it makes more sense to charge to 90-95% and hit your first SC with less charge.

Intheknow636 2026-03-05 01:57

Why is it harmful to keep car at 80%?

here-to-crap-on-it 2026-03-05 02:03

Recommend not charging to 100% if you use Regen braking. Go to 98% instead. You don't want a nasty surprise when you have no Regen braking at the start of your trip.

Sweaty_Valuable8348 2026-03-05 02:06

It's a good thing to charge to 100% every few months so the battery can calibrate itself.

NYHeel 2026-03-05 03:04

I wouldn’t say that it’s harmful but keeping your car always at 80% is significantly worse than keeping your car at say 55%, for purposes of degradation. The higher your state of charge the worse the degradation. The OP referenced ABC and 80%. That means he’s always keeping the car at 80%. It’s not overly bad (Tesla does recommend it after all) but degradation is worse if you consistently keep your car at 80%.

avebelle 2026-03-05 03:24

You should keep it as low as you can while still being usable. Most people probably use like 20-30% a day so there’s really no reason to charge to 80%.

Intheknow636 2026-03-05 03:35

Ok, thanks . I drive only 15 -25 miles maybe I should charge to 80 on Monday and charge again perhaps on the following weekend ? So let it drop 80 to 30? I thought charging everyday to 80 is the way . Thanks

NYHeel 2026-03-05 03:40

I just charge to 55%. I don’t use a lot of miles on most days. So unless I’m driving more one day I just set the charge limit to 55%. Based on the graphs and research on NCA batteries, the US based 2026 Model Y battery, 55% appears to be the highest storage SOC before a significant increase in degradation. Keep in mind that you’re not ruining your car charging it to 80%. But you are likely to have more degradation on the battery after 3-5 years vs charging it to 55%. If that’s important to you and you don’t drive much on most days then 55% might be the charge limit for you. If you don’t really care then just charge to 80%.

Kvillase 2026-03-05 16:07

Have you not opened the charging settings in the car at all? They literally designed the car to do exactly what you want.

Big_Acanthaceae4891 2026-03-05 16:26

I have indeed, but I require further insight and clarification regarding the scope of potential actions and its implementation, particularly in conjunction with my existing scheduled and integrated charging system.

dkpnw 2026-03-05 16:47

enable the "Apply Friction Brakes when Regen is Limited" option and be done with it. No difference in that case. Not sure why this option isn't just on by default

Kvillase 2026-03-05 19:07

Did you just use AI to write a response to my comment?

Big_Acanthaceae4891 2026-03-05 19:21

🤣🤣🤣, No, that was the executive IT Manager that I am response that came out. But thank you.

AlmostLiveRadio 2026-03-08 11:45

I wouldn’t be worried about charging to 100%. In fact, they say it is bad to let it sit with a full charge, especially if it is warm. I would just set the charger to 100% an hour before you left and maybe it will be over 90%. Just stop in charge along the way letting the automatic routing tell you when. It charges much more quickly when it is at a lower state of charge.
