Tint options?

true-dci-john-luther | 2026-03-04 13:49 | 8 views

Just picked up my new Model Y today and noticed the rear windows and roof are already factory tinted. I have a tint appointment tomorrow and the shop uses XPEL ceramic film. My main goals are heat reduction and a bit of privacy, but I don’t want it to look overly dark or regret doubling up on the rear glass. For those who’ve tinted their Model Y: \- What % did you do on the front windows? \- Did you add ceramic film over the factory rear glass, and if so what %? \- Did you tint the windshield (70%, 50%, etc.)? \- Did anyone tint the glass roof, and was it worth it? Trying to figure out the most sensible setup before my appointment tomorrow. Appreciate any advice!

All I did was tint the front 30%.  It blends well with the rears.  I don't personally recommend windshield tint, but I drive in a lot of rural unit areas.

BenzWagen 2026-03-04 13:59

I just did the front two with 35% which for me, is perfect for night driving. Matches the back pretty good.

aIJay17 2026-03-04 14:05

20% windshield and front windows, 70% rear windows/rear hatch/sunroof

Ok_Rate_1752 2026-03-04 14:08

5% all around, except the windshield. If you're not used to dark tints I would go 30%. Plenty dark and good visibility

KernelClapperz 2026-03-04 14:21

70% windshield 70% roof 35% doors 55% rear

gamingwithtrue 2026-03-04 14:24

I went with 15% front windows, 50% windshield and 35% over factory rear. All ceramic, works well for me. Plenty of light comes in thru the day and looks dark enough at dusk/night.

mozman68 2026-03-04 14:46

This is the way....

BadMotherThukker 2026-03-04 14:47

I matched the factory back windows. 25% I think. They know for sure. Ask what people tend to do ussually for ideas.

s4lty-f0x 2026-03-04 14:57

I did 50 shield, 20 fronts and 5 over the back. The back is a little dark and took a few days to get used to again after years of not having an SUV, but with the cameras mapped to the scroll wheel button, I love the privacy while still having the relative visibility

Secret-Mind-6140 2026-03-04 15:02

It really all depends on the state laws for what people do. Similar with if they do the windshield. In Texas you can do clear on front so the AIR 80 or AIR 90 (measured in how much light through) are options with little chance of getting a ticket for. The front windows can’t be darker than 25%. But believe can do as dark as want for rest. I did do the top glass as Tesla dyed the glass and did UV treatment but not IR blocking so still lot of heat transfer.

mushyspider 2026-03-04 15:17

I did 35% windshield 15% front doors 50% over the rear shaded glass. I wanted it dark though and have white seats, which require a darker tint than with black seats.

matthew19 2026-03-04 15:20

Factory rear glass and rear passenger windows reject heat pretty well. I did 50% front windshield and 25% sides I think. The 70 % front windshield tint is very blue/green. Wish I had done the roof.

brownhairybeardog 2026-03-04 15:20

I did 70 percent ceramic for the windshield. It’s barely noticeable. For the front, I did 35 regular old tint. It has been 3 years and super happy with the results. It’s subtle but classy.

hypehaze 2026-03-04 16:27

Pretty sure factory "tint" is only darkened privacy glass that doesn't have much heat rejection. Someone correct if wrong. So I would always ceramic tint over it for heat rejection properties. Doesn't make sense to only ceramic the front windows and not the rear. Juniper roof glass comes with heat rejection properties from what I hear so I didn't touch it, got motorized roof shade anyways. Heard for roof glass if it's tinted too dark that it can absorb too much heat, and be prone to cracking. Did 25 front, 70 in rears to make them match.(Factory privacy glass has around 20-25 VLT) 50 on front windshield. Don't go darker than 50 imo. It's slightly noticeable at 50. Can go lighter like 70-80 and then you won't be able to tell there's tint on the windshield. None on roof glass.

true-dci-john-luther 2026-03-04 16:33

I went with XPEL XR+ (96% heat rejection) with 70% front, 70% windshield and 30% back. I didn’t know roof already has heat protection and I already added it (should I call them and cancel?). Cost for all is $950. Is it a good price?

Cleverfawn123 2026-03-04 16:45

the roof doesnt need to be done IMO. it already rejects a lot of heat. in my model y I did windshield 50% and front 2 windows 25% with 50% on the all the backs the backs is just darkened glass I added tint on top of it for the heat rejection for my son and future kiddos

Mindless-Respect7155 2026-03-04 16:55

How much did you all pay for ceramic ? Looking to get everything done except the roof TIA

Kenny_Power55 2026-03-04 17:25

I did the same for my car, got the windshield at 50%. Looks so dark!

Ballbm90 2026-03-04 18:44

I thought it was not recommended to tint the roof because of the tint retaining heat and creating risk for the glass to crack?

-Woogity- 2026-03-04 18:45

20% sides and back and top 50% windshield

-Woogity- 2026-03-04 18:46

It’s probably a good shop. I’d say go for it at that price.

paladin_NA 2026-03-04 18:59

35% windshield = too dark for me on my X 15% sides = again too dark 50% windshield and 35% on the side the sweet spot. I did xpel xr plus but the shop messed it up so I ended up getting re-done at 3M. My first experience with Xpel was terrible.

Far-Theory8590 2026-03-04 19:25

Did 50% on windshield and 20% on all side windows. I have the white interior and I kind of wished I went darker for the side windows. The white seats really pop out. I would do 15% or darker on my side windows next time. The roof is insanely expensive to tint. The roof alone cost as much as tinting front rear windshield and all side windows. I just went with a cheap sunshade from Amazon to help with heat from the roof

stadce071012 2026-03-04 20:29

I just tinted the two front windows with 20%, plus a brow strip across the top of the windshield. Matches well with the rear. If I were doing it again I would do 70% on the whole windshield, with a second layer for a darker brow.

Wants-NotNeeds 2026-03-04 22:24

Just the front windows to their legal limit. Even then, it noticeably obfuscates outward visibility. I don’t understand how anything darker is tolerated. Don’t get me started on windshields. Just the fronts evens out the look, and is more sporty looking to me. I don’t have any issues with hot cabin in 95F. No need for anything else with the new & improved reflective roof glass. I precondition for 5 minutes and it’s fine for me.

quentech 2026-03-04 23:02

> I drive in a lot of rural unit areas Same but I love my 40% windshield (tbf, if I was redoing it I'd probably go 50% instead, mainly to cut down on ticket risk - that 40% is really dark from the outside in some lighting).

Inquisitive_Force11 2026-03-04 23:05

Tell the tint shop to match the back windows for a consistent look!

xyzlor 2026-03-05 01:46

They’re privacy tinted I thought but not heat block tinted. I did 70 on the front and 30 I believe on the rest.

AwkwardlyPositioned 2026-03-05 01:51

In my case I mean there are no street lights at all for nearly 35 miles.  That's why I won't do it at least.

Joe_5oh 2026-03-05 04:49

I did 15% for all side windows and rear window. 70% for the windshield. I didnt touch roof glass, going to see how the silver heat rejection stuff is on the Juniper.

LowConfection5326 2026-03-05 06:21

70 windshield 20 front side 55 rear side and roof 30 back

true-dci-john-luther 2026-03-05 14:32

Yes I did, it looks great

true-dci-john-luther 2026-03-05 14:33

Great to hear the new roof has great heat rejection!

true-dci-john-luther 2026-03-05 14:35

I went with 30% where my state laws allow, wish I went with 35% to be safe

true-dci-john-luther 2026-03-05 14:36

yup I did 70% for windshield as well and it’s pretty good. 30% front and back matching.

true-dci-john-luther 2026-03-05 14:37

Yeah good choice

batzona 2026-03-05 14:38

mind sharing a pic? i am also considering doing a 70% for the windshield, thanks!

true-dci-john-luther 2026-03-05 14:39

I’d say it’s YMMV but you can bargain to 30%-40% off if you have 2nd car, they first offer you maybe 10% but you can always bargain down more

true-dci-john-luther 2026-03-05 14:41

Yup, I did sunroof as well but it’s before people tell it’s not necessary lol. But if we can pay extra for more heat rejection I’d say go for it

true-dci-john-luther 2026-03-05 14:42

Yeah 35% windshield is probably too dark, and 15% sides as well. How was your service with Xpel? What did they do wrong?

true-dci-john-luther 2026-03-05 16:41

Here you go pal. Had to upload to dropbox as reddit doesn’t allow me to upload [70% Windshield](https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/intvjnhjym0j5l5onmgpg/Photo-Mar-05-2026-10-37-59.jpg?rlkey=j6bnv0pp3o4cq4xdrcpahzjjv&st=fy358oks&dl=0)

Schnitzhole 2026-03-05 16:48

It's good but I still have their shade cover for it for when it gets 90+ the cabin still gets hot. A lot better than the old models but still not near full rejection.

Wants-NotNeeds 2026-03-05 17:21

Right. It’s still glass, but moderate high temps and between cabin overheat protection and preconditioning I made it through my first summer without much concern.

paladin_NA 2026-03-05 19:56

They were very inefficient at tinting the front windshield of my Model X. Yes, I know it's a large window, but the finish was really substandard; they left excess film on the edges that hadn't been trimmed. This was my very first time using XPEL, as I usually only put 3M on my vehicles, but this was a poor experience and I probably won't go back to XPEL at all.

true-dci-john-luther 2026-03-05 21:45

Ugh, too bad. Did they refund you? Or they are the same shop but just redo with 3M instead of XPEL? My XPEL experience was a little bit different, everything was find except they did some scratches on my windshield but they took responsibility and give me options either get it replaced with Tesla since my Model Y is 2 days new and they discount me further or they setup my replacement with Tesla and pay for it (but still make no different with first option to me though, since I have 30 day windshield warranty, so I went with option 1).

true-dci-john-luther 2026-03-05 21:46

I did exactly the same!

true-dci-john-luther 2026-03-05 21:46

70% for windshield is good enough, I did the same. However I went with 30% for the sides.

batzona 2026-03-09 06:04

Looks good! thanks for sharing
