Should I take it?

pizookiesswirl | 2026-03-04 05:59 | 78 views

My mom is letting me burrow her 2023 Model Y Tesla that is a lease because in a few months she told me i would have to get a car. She told me that I would get a new Tesla and I saved enough for it but.. my mom got a call saying that we could buy the Tesla model Y for 20K. It has 28K miles and I wouldn’t have to worry about paying so much and can use it for nursing school. I’m 19 yrs old

That's a pretty good deal. I'd take it.

IamWisdom 2026-03-04 06:06

Thats a steal wow

parichayn 2026-03-04 06:12

100% take it.

mikeinanaheim2 2026-03-04 06:13

Yes, at that price you can't go wrong. Insurance cost will be higher though.

tinyboxav 2026-03-04 06:38

If you don’t I’ll give you $22,000 for it

jjj44200 2026-03-04 07:15

Buy it but please , watch your speed . These are fast accelerating cars and at your age I was not responsible at all . I hope you are .

cheapdvds 2026-03-04 07:18

Yeah at your age, since you don't have enough driving experience, cost is everything, lower is better. Chances are even if you don't hit other people, other people will hit you.

Saloncinx 2026-03-04 07:29

I paid more for a 2021 with like 40k miles haha. I would take that deal for sure

PilotPirx73 2026-03-04 09:29

For that price? Answer this: is the pope catholic????

K3jai 2026-03-04 09:42

Yes, for $20,000, it would be an incredible deal if that’s even the actual price or deal. A 2023 Model Y lease typically includes a pre-agreed purchase price at the end of the term contract, which maybe usually between $26,000 and $29,000. I doubt Tesla negotiates with those numbers.

You didn't ask but you need to know if it was built with the HW3 or the HW4 FSD computer. You may not be aware of FSD but this absolutely matters whether or not you care about it because the newer built HW4 FSD computer performs better than the HW3 FSD computer and most importantly the HW3 FSD computer is not currently upgradeable to the HW4 FSD computer. Customers who bought the FSD option (there are many) were told their vehicles would be supported by Tesla to run the FSD software but Tesla has yet to decide how Tesla will accomplish this. In early 2025 Tesla made huge programmatic progress with the FSD software and delivered FSD v14 to the HW4 vehicles but not the HW3 vehicles. By the way this HW3 or HW4 difference applies to all Tesla models and so does the version of FSD software that is installed. It depends on the specific production date and factory of the 2023 Tesla Model Y, as Tesla transitioned from HW3 (Hardware 3) to HW4 (also called AI4) during 2023. Tesla began rolling out HW4 in the Model Y (primarily from the Fremont factory in the US) starting in late May 2023. Early 2023 Model Ys (built before roughly May/June 2023) came with HW3. Most Model Ys built from around June 2023 onward (especially US-built/Fremont) have HW4, though the transition was gradual, and some later 2023 builds might still have HW3 in certain cases or from other factories (e.g., Shanghai exports to certain markets had a later switch in 2024). Since the question is about a leased 2023 Model Y (likely US-market, given common lease contexts), many 2023 leases—especially those delivered mid-to-late year—ended up with HW4. However, early-2023 leases/deliveries typically have HW3. To confirm for a specific vehicle: Check the software menu: Go to Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information. It says "Full Self-Driving Computer" for both, but you can look at camera previews (if available) or side repeater cameras—HW4 has higher-res (5MP) cameras, red-tinted lenses, and only two forward-facing cameras (vs. three in HW3). Or check the production date on the door jamb sticker or VIN details. HW4 offers advantages like better cameras (higher resolution), more computing power (roughly 3-5x faster), but current FSD software still largely runs in a compatibility mode on HW4, with full divergence expected in future updates.

HW4 will never do FSD well. Idk how many of yall are so delusional. Yall gotta wait for HW5.

thewashley 2026-03-04 13:24

I wouldn't recommend burrowing it, that will certainly cause damage!

F1_rm 2026-03-04 13:27

If you actually want it, yes! It's an amazing car, you probably know already, but if this is not something you want right now, you should speak with your mother.

Cold-Pudding-9774 2026-03-04 13:36

I never post literally first time. I just read here to gain insight, but con demon time must be inexperienced or in denial. ( didn’t want to be harsh but not the first words that came to mind ) I live in NY and FSD on HW 4 is amazing. Living on Long Island and going to queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn for work daily where we’re known for psychos on the road all the time. The car preforms better than most ppl and reaction times are certainly better. I’m out there everyday and it even drives so well I can slip in a lil nap shh don’t tell anyone. Btw “Ccondemontime”we’re not delusional you’re just a hater or don’t have new tech. That said they improve fast, so no doubt HW5 will be better but HW4 in my model Y premium 2026 is outstanding even by my professional high standards. FYI this is my second Tesla. 19 y.o OP take the deal bc there’s not a better one, and after school you’ll have plenty of your own money to buy new. That’s a sweetheart deal and if utilized you’ll leverage yourself into great position at a young age. Good for you !

pizookiesswirl 2026-03-04 14:00

I think I will take it. It’s pretty nice and I mean it’s not even a lot to pay off and hopefully I’ll be a nurse in 2030 🥹

NecessaryInternet603 2026-03-04 14:08

Wrong

CConDemonTime 2026-03-04 14:11

Ur delusional if u think unsupervised is going to be viable for HW4. 🤣

NecessaryInternet603 2026-03-04 14:13

I forgot to add that as of today the value of a Tesla with HW4 is thousands of dollars more valuable than a HW3 Tesla. At the present time Tesla is still deciding how they want to proceed vis a vis the large quantities of the Tesla HW3 vehicle fleet.

AZFJ60 2026-03-04 14:23

"got a call" from who? Not sure why Tesla would just give your mom 9-10k in cash. Something isn't right here.

AZFJ60 2026-03-04 14:24

You're 19 and have $50k for a new Tesla? Say more about this, it is awesome.

swimm89 2026-03-04 14:51

You will be, stay focused and don’t give up!

Rare-Lunch3207 2026-03-04 15:22

Yes!!!!!!!!!

harda_toenail 2026-03-04 15:54

CHECK INSURANCE if you’re going to be paying that bill.

harda_toenail 2026-03-04 15:54

Why 2030? Get an adn and get to work!

pizookiesswirl 2026-03-04 16:43

It’s cause I’m working for my bachelors I just started college 😁

pizookiesswirl 2026-03-04 17:18

I also have my MA certification and volunteering so once I get my BSN it’ll be easier 😁

pizookiesswirl 2026-03-04 17:41

Thank you sm 😁

pizookiesswirl 2026-03-04 17:58

She told me she got a call from the person that we lease from for the car

pizookiesswirl 2026-03-04 18:00

Yeah I’ve been saving 😆

Seabee1893 2026-03-04 18:05

I bought my 22 for $32k 18 months ago. That's a steal.

IcyExchange3786 2026-03-04 18:24

DO NOT BUY!!! Sell it to me! Thats a smoking deal. You are saving at least 7k.

harda_toenail 2026-03-04 18:25

If I could change anything about my education it’d be to get my ADN at a cheap community college rather than my bsn at a university. I would do adn, adn to bsn online while working as an rn. Then pursue whatever else. I’m an msn working at a 200 bed hospital. Nursing school is hard. Put aside everything else and focus on school. Save as much as you can so you’re in as little debt as possible as a new nurse. Most of the nurses I work with are barely surviving paycheck to paycheck because they always have a car payment and mortgage and are terrible with money.

pizookiesswirl 2026-03-04 18:27

I would get my ADN but looking at the applications for nursing most of it now requires a BSN if I was 40 with a ADN I would be able to but yeah

harda_toenail 2026-03-04 18:30

The nursing shortage is worse than it’s ever been. If you are breathing and have an rn you’ll get hired.

AZFJ60 2026-03-04 18:40

Sounds like your mom is making up the difference. That's not how lease buyouts work.

Slayerz00m 2026-03-04 18:54

🤣

Slayerz00m 2026-03-04 19:01

I don't know who's con demon time, but just ignore the haters. Make your own decisions, Teslas are great for maybe 70% of people's use-cases. IMO, they aren't good for: - Long distance towing - someone with 200+ miles daily usage with no charging options at office - for someone who has no cheap home charging _(people do make it work with Superchargers alone, but it takes away half the Convenience of EV)_

Minnemize 2026-03-04 19:32

Right?! At that age, I was racing ppl lol

Valkyri_Azula 2026-03-04 22:59

Don’t forgot about factoring in insurance, a few thousand a year.

pizookiesswirl 2026-03-04 22:59

Yeah I’m aware it’s ok

Sensitive_Bite_3677 2026-03-04 23:30

OP should check insurance prices now. 20k car but paying 50k car price with insurance.

handymanny131003 2026-03-05 03:46

It's a good deal, but keep in mind your insurance will be higher than most other cars at this price. You'll save money compared to say a $20k Prius or Camry just in maintenance + gas, but it'll likely offset the insurance. Assume your charging cost is $20 a month, so $240 for the year. You want new tires every 3 years, and that's $1000 for the set. So total cost/year is $575 let's say. Camry I'd budget $350 for oil changes and misc repairs/stuff. Let's say you save another $300/year for whatever big stuff may come up. Tires, brakes, engine repairs, etc. Gas you'll be spending about $150 a month? $1,800+300+350=$2,450 for running your Camry/year. That's $1,800 MORE on the Camry vs a Y, which makes sense that's why people drive an EV! But for you, especially because you're a young driver, insurance is gonna eat you alive. For reference, I am 23 with an impeccable driving history and I got quoted $2,500 for an annual policy on a Camry, vs almost $4,500 on a Tesla. Your $1,800 savings just evaporated lol. This ALL depends on you. Age, gender, driving history, area you live in, etc all impact your policy. So get an agent to get you some quotes on what different cars will cost to insure. Create a spreadsheet to track the numbers (maintenance costs, repairs, insurance, depreciation) and compare it all. You may find the Tesla is cheaper, or you may find it's MUCH more expensive. If you're dead set on a Tesla though, this is a fantastic deal

ConstantStrike5438 2026-03-05 04:23

Good luck with the nursing school with that kind of English at the age of 19.

pizookiesswirl 2026-03-05 04:24

🙄

ConstantStrike5438 2026-03-05 04:27

🤣🤣

Recent_Birthday2727 2026-03-05 20:33

I got a similar deal on a performance at 25k take that deal man!!

Aggravating-Week9313 2026-03-05 22:07

Amazing deal, I bought my 19 Model 3 performance in summer 2021 $25k with 55k miles. And you have about 5 years of battery and motor warranty. I would get insurance quotes too before u buy.

Quick_Possibility_99 2026-03-08 02:42

Good luck in being a nurse. Perfect job to afford the car.

dalardorf 2026-03-09 20:50

Iit must be nice being 19 and thinking a 20k car is not a lot! I remember my first car was a 1988 Honda Civic SI hatchback! It cost me $4k at the time but I had already saved I enough money working full time since I was young. I I digress. Take it in a heartbeat. Seems you can afford it and it’s a great deal. You also know the history of the vehicle….
