Model Y Windshield Replacement – Safelite ($1405) vs Tesla ($1577+) vs Local Shop ($1200). What Would You Do?

mahdy1991 | 2026-03-03 20:58 | 14 views

Hey everyone, Unfortunately got a crack in my Model Y windshield and now I’m trying to decide where to get it replaced. Here are the three quotes I received: Safelite: $1,405 total – Windshield – New wipers – Special anti-water windshield treatment – Includes tax Tesla Service Center: $1,577 – Windshield replacement only – Plus tax (so final will be a bit higher) Local third-party installer: $1,200 total – Windshield – Camera calibration included So Tesla is roughly $200+ more than Safelite and doesn’t include wipers or any treatment. The local shop is the cheapest option and includes calibration, but obviously it’s not Tesla or a big national chain. I’ve read mixed opinions about going third-party vs Tesla directly, especially with camera calibration and making sure everything works properly afterward. I obviously want the job done right — no leaks, no wind noise, no autopilot/camera issues. For those of you who’ve had your windshield replaced: \- Did you go with Safelite, Tesla, or another local shop? \- Any issues afterward with calibration or fitment? \- Would you do it the same way again? Appreciate any real-world experiences before I pull the trigger. Thanks!

Tesla for sure

BarcaLiverpool 2026-03-03 21:03

Go through insurance and pay your deductible. Take it to Tesla collision center.

Many-Relief-2235 2026-03-03 21:03

I’ve done my Tesla with Safelite and Tesla (4 windshields thus far) - 2 from each one.  All have been positive and easy experiences. And Safelite used Tesla glass as well. Honestly I would just look at reviews and go from there.  Windshields I think are pretty standard and Safelite and Tesla are reputable. Just comes down to price and what’s easiest for you.

kenzo99k 2026-03-03 21:03

Tesla would I think recalibrate the windshield camera. I’d go with Tesla.

norf937 2026-03-03 21:10

Tesla. We had our Model Y windshield replaced by Safelite before. Afterward, there was clear wind noise coming through the bottom of the windshield at highway speeds, and the front cameras behind the glass constantly had condensation issues which affected FSD.

Dangerwolf1979 2026-03-03 21:11

I’d pay my deductible and get it fixed through insurance…

brewton 2026-03-03 21:11

Safelite will have to do the same. They did it on my GMC Yukon XL.

JefreyA-01 2026-03-03 21:15

insurance through safelite was 100

Alucardis666 2026-03-03 21:17

This is the way

Level-Photograph633 2026-03-03 21:21

If you use Tesla, you can join their windshield protection plan.

kenzo99k 2026-03-03 21:22

Sure. I just meant that OP didn’t mention that Tesla would too. For the price difference, I’d stick with Tesla. They can be touchy or sometimes even jerks about aftermarket work. If there were a camera issue with FSD, Autosteer or TACC errors, an accident or just weird behavior, it’s an easier story if they did the work.

OLVANstorm 2026-03-03 21:22

It's more than replacing the windshield. There is a calibration of the camera to figure in there. I did 2 Safelight replacements. 1 was ok. The 2nd did not calibrate the cameras properly and I had to go into Tesla to get it fixed. I would just pony up and have Tesla do it.

Gravemore_ 2026-03-03 21:25

Bite the bullet and then Spend the $16mo for the insurance after you get an OEM replacement from Tesla

aswickedas 2026-03-03 21:36

When I had mine done my insurance company told me to always go to Tesla.  Don't go anywhere else.

Hot_Sheepherder_9749 2026-03-03 21:48

Replaced mine about two weeks ago with Safelite through insurance. Saved around $700. Have had no issues since.

Fit_Buffalo9314 2026-03-03 21:49

Insurance, or if you want to pay out of pocket, go with tesla, and after replacement subscribe to the windshield protection plan.

MichaelMeier112 2026-03-03 21:50

> Special anti-water windshield treatment What is this? Ask if Safelite also have the special wind resistance coating they can add for $450

StormTrpr66 2026-03-03 21:56

Probably Aquapel or something like that. What I've been looking for but can't seem to find is any product that protects the windshield from being sandblasted and ending up with those tiny pits that you can only see when the sun hits it just right, then it looks like your windshield is covered in glitter. Every single car I've had ends up like that.

woody60707 2026-03-03 22:02

Safelite will use aftermarket windshield. But then Safelite charges $700 to calibrate safety cameras. ... These cameras are self calibrated. Lol       Edit: the legal requirements for windshield make aftermarket and OEM mostly identical. But if you ever want to sell your car, you will take a hit for having an aftermarket windshield.

woody60707 2026-03-03 22:04

$1000 deductible is pretty common now of days. Also a claim like this shouldn't affect your monthly payments, it's a risk with every claim.

Ornery_Climate1056 2026-03-03 22:08

Non-factor......you can do the camera calibration yourself: Controls / Service / Camera Calibration / Clear Calibration then drive 25 miles on a freshly(ish) striped road in daylight.

Hollowbound 2026-03-03 22:14

This right here. I paid $500 deductible to get my windshield replaced by insurance because I had a chip with “legs” that didn’t qualify me for the Tesla windshield plan. After getting it replaced and then getting the plan, I had to replace my windshield again after two months. Didn’t cost me anything beyond the monthly payment.

kconfire 2026-03-03 22:14

Pay out of pocket and replace windshield through Tesla. Buy windshield insurance.

kconfire 2026-03-03 22:15

herdofcorgis 2026-03-03 22:20

I had my non-Tesla windshield replaced by Safelite, told them the car’s features and having a head’s up display. The aftermarket glass they used did not work with the HUD - it was displaying double. I fought to have them redo the job with OEM glass at no cost, they still tried charging me $250 for the second replacement. Never again.

Mundane_Engineer_550 2026-03-03 22:23

100% through Tesla, then you can get the windshield protection plan to cover the next one

oh_io_94 2026-03-03 22:32

Insurance and deductible. If your deductible is over 1500 just pay Tesla

cheapdvds 2026-03-03 23:11

if price is close, tesla 100%. I heard nightmare stories from safelite. Internal damage, camera stopped working, water leak, had to go back multiple times... . etc.

IzzysGhost 2026-03-04 00:15

I have $0 glass deductible in New York, that's the same price annually as Tesla's windshield insurance. It covers ALL glass, roof, side windows, front and back windshields, not just the front windshield. So check with your insurance company and see if they offer $0 deductible glass coverage. I just had a windshield replaced on my 2060MY and after a bit of haggling, they agreed to cover OEM glass. Tesla was $200 cheaper than SafeLight, so I had Tesla cover it. I had to pay out of pocket, but I had reimbursement two days later.

IzzysGhost 2026-03-04 00:18

Many times, same manufacturer as well. Fuyao was the glass Safelite quoted in my replacement. They manufacture glass for Tesla.

Mud_BooDa 2026-03-04 00:18

I’ve gone to Tesla - As they will recalibrate the cameras and if there’s any issues after the fact it’s all warrantied

treyhunna83 2026-03-04 00:35

Insurance

FoxBearBear 2026-03-04 01:06

I have glass without deductible on mine

woody60707 2026-03-04 01:09

You likely live in Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina, or Arizona where state laws limits deductibles on safety issues, such as a windshield.

DeathBlade94 2026-03-04 01:11

Man where’s time gone, a 2060 MY already? How’s the charging curve, build quality, more importantly how’s fsd? 🤣

DeathBlade94 2026-03-04 01:13

Same here. Recently learned I can get State Farm zero deductible glass coverage to reimburse me so next windshield will be done at Tesla and then I’ll be getting the protection plan so I don’t have to risk an increase.

IzzysGhost 2026-03-04 01:31

I always forget which reality I’m currently in. At least it’s good to know Tesla is still around 35 years later.

DeathBlade94 2026-03-04 01:53

Given current climate around the world for one reason or another I can’t blame you 🤣

LexusRC 2026-03-04 01:55

Went through Safelite last month and got a non-OEM windshield. Seems to work fine though.

dontrackonme 2026-03-04 03:21

I have been driving for 30+ years and have never had a windshield crack. Is this a common thing in Teslas?

RojerLockless 2026-03-04 03:37

My local glass shop did it for 450

the_cappers 2026-03-04 04:06

Camera calibration is a scam. You press a button and drive it around. Thats all

Hustlean 2026-03-04 04:28

Does the windshield break easily?

Aromatic-Union1707 2026-03-04 04:28

They must pass safety requirements but have no requirements on visual quality.

Aromatic-Union1707 2026-03-04 04:29

Fuyao does make glass for Tesla but not windshields.

Ordinary-Cake8510 2026-03-04 04:32

My Tesla Service Center uses Safelite.

mahdy1991 2026-03-04 05:51

More luck.

mahdy1991 2026-03-04 05:51

Dang

Psyking0 2026-03-04 16:50

Mine was 1000 to replace from Tesla service. I did not use my insurance. Then I got the $16 insurance.

meowtothemeow 2026-03-04 18:15

Tesla

Intelligent-Ad-9112 2026-03-04 19:39

Safelite is really good I used them

sanil1986 2026-03-05 02:08

My insurance claims caused the next policy to go up ... yes, the windshield even though I had it through insurance .... next time it happened... yes, twice!!!! i did it locally at around 850

GucciTokes 2026-03-05 05:00

exactly what i had to do but the $16/mo is worth it — just had mobile service come out to fix a ding for free last week 👍🏼

UCBearcats 2026-03-05 05:53

Safelite is awful.

d33170 2026-03-05 06:59

💯

Dear_Needleworker485 2026-03-05 21:18

FSD by end of year! This time for real!

DeutschQuack 2026-03-06 11:46

This type of claim wouldn’t impact the insurance premium as glass is covered under Comprehensive coverage and is considered an ‘act of god.’

NovelAgent111 2026-03-06 20:14

I went thru this lately, two Model y windshield replacements. One at Safelite, and the other at Tesla. The Tesla process was cleaner and faster. But the safelite process is fine, also, if you are not near a Tesla shop. Insurance covered it the same for me, both ways. But I have to add that I had purchased the specific glass "rider" for all our cars. Amica Mutual Insurance. So, I cannot predict what others are paying. Good luck.

NovelAgent111 2026-03-06 20:18

Yes, should have mentioned: Tesla shop gave me real Tesla glass. Safelite gave me generic Asian glass. No calibration problems with either windshield replacement. Though you would have more confidence with a Tesla shop doing re-calibration, if needed, rather than a Safelite shop that sees one or two Tesla's per month. But both solutions are working fine a few months down the line. Neither shop did a first-class job of washing the glass, inside and out.
