Considering a Switch to MYP

MarketingGuy814 | 2026-03-03 12:49 | 12 views

Hi everyone! Long time lurker who and Tesla fan who is thinking of taking the plunge. I currently drive a 2023 Mercedes EQS 580 SUV. It's big, luxurious, comfortable, and...super boring. A family member picked up a 2026 Model Y Premium AWD in September and it's been a blast to drive and I love the tech (FSD specifically but just about everything else). I'm married with 2 kids (6 and 4) in booster seats. My wife has a new Volvo XC90 plugin hybrid so I don't necessarily need an SUV. So, I decided to test drive all of the Teslas and see if any of them brought enough joy to give up my EQS. **Cybertruck**: Polarizing looks (I think it grew on me), love the tech (steer by wire, etc.), but way too big and cumbersome. Not nearly as floaty as the EQS, but simply not fun to drive because of its size. **Model X:** Much better than EQS in handling, but still a bit floaty even with the suspension at the firmest setting. Tech feels outdated. It's clear Tesla is spending time on the single-screen designs, as the two-screen setup was subpar (using the scroll wheel to pick parking spots, etc.). Didn't care for the falcon wing doors. **Model S:** Too low to the ground, better handling the Model X, but the inside felt a bit claustrophobic to me given how small it is. **Model 3:** Actually felt like the best handling of all Teslas at this time. Nimble and I could throw into corners. It felt more open and airy than Model S, but still low to the ground for my taste. **Model Y:** This was the clear winner for me. Tech is perfect with plenty of interior space and the handling of the MY Performance was fantastic. So, this brings me to the question -- am I completely insane for thinking about selling my EQS and buying a new Model Y Performance? Money is not an issues (I could easily purchase any of the Teslas cash), it's more of the right fit for me. Has anyone made a similar switch (large luxury SUV to Model Y)?

I think you’ll end up disappointed with the creature comforts and overall refinement of the MYP vs EQS. I’d personally consider the iX3 or even iX first

bpearsondc 2026-03-03 12:57

MY is a good size for family of 4, definitely not a large SUV. But, you will be surprised with amount of cargo space. I can fit as much in my MY as my wife's grand highlander. Love my MY just ordered my second one. They are faster than 98% of cars out there as well. Why performance vs premium AWD?

Jman841 2026-03-03 13:08

I got a 2026 MYP at the end of December and love it. Also a similar situation, can buy any car cash (bought this cash) and I test drove almost all of the competition. It’s the perfect balance of practicality, fun, tech, and overall feel. FSD is incredible and a creature comfort I couldn’t imagine living without now, far better than some buttons or fancy chrome trim.

bunebune 2026-03-03 13:09

You will lack the luxury of mercedes in MY. I would choose MS or MX

MarketingGuy814 2026-03-03 13:10

It's possible and that's the only thing holding me back. But, I have to say, Teslas are so easy to live with. Here is a comical example: **Tesla:** Approach car (auto unlocks), get in, put foot on brake, and shift into gear. Park car, get out, and walk away (auto lock). **EQS:** Approach car (80% of the time in auto unlocks, but 20% I have touch the handle multiple times and even get the fob). Then, I get in and put foot on brake, and push the start button. About 60-70% of the time it doesn't actually start (Mercedes says this is normal despite repeated service visits). Have to push again several times until it finally starts. Park car, turn off (about 20% of the time it actually doesn't turn off despite pushing button firmly and completely). Get out and try to lock door with door handle. It takes on average 5 taps to lock and I often get frustrated then switch to using the fob.

Jman841 2026-03-03 13:10

Totally disagree, FSD, phone apps and teslas overall experience is a much better creature comfort vs. some buttons and and fancy trim. Build quality and ride quality on the refresh Y is much better than it used to be, not quite BMW level but close enough that the tech and overall user experience is far better than BMW.

MarketingGuy814 2026-03-03 13:11

That's what I'm thinking -- luxury is nice, but I prefer tech and performance.

MarketingGuy814 2026-03-03 13:12

That's great to know -- thank you for sharing. I tested both and prefer the performance.

MarketingGuy814 2026-03-03 13:13

I am hesitant to buy a model that is being discontinued. From a driving perspective, I prefer the Y vs S and X. From a luxury perspective, I didn't really find the X and S much of a cut above, to be honest. All of them pale in comparison to the EQS.

HoppyDave 2026-03-03 13:13

You don't need the Performance option, especially with small children. The AWD will provide plenty of power, and a smoother ride. Oh, and compare the difference in Insurance rates ?

Powers5580 2026-03-03 13:16

I have had my MYP for almost two years and still smile every time I look at it. Best car I ever owned. The only problem is when I drive my wife's Jeep and I leave it on and forget to lock it when walking away

clipse270 2026-03-03 13:18

Guess it depends on what you need. How big is your family, will you road trip? And pets that need to go along. It’s not a big car so having ample room to travel can be a barrier to some. The biggest question is can you charge at home. That will make or break the whole experience for you. Supercharging every 1-2 days will get old quick

Stepqen2 2026-03-03 13:19

I’m going to be honest, I just jumped into the deep end, I did two test drives, the range was amazing. Both test drives were on the MY Prem LR AWD and I fell in love with it. Used to be a hater, but it will always be an iPad on Wheels to me, even when owning it. I will ask which car we taking? “Big Grey or the iPad” 😂. I decided to YOLO it on Feb 11th, order and finance got approved. Waiting for delivery! Estimate deliver is 19th of April - 12 of May. Hoping to get my VIN on Saturday 21st of March!

Jman841 2026-03-03 13:20

I’ve got over 3k miles on it in 2 months of driving, 2550 of it is FSD. You’ll love it.

Swampassed 2026-03-03 13:22

I went from owning S class cars for the last twenty years to a myp and never looked back.

benjamin_noah 2026-03-03 13:22

I switched from an S63 AMG to a Model X, then traded that in and bought two new Model Ys — one Premium AWD and one Performance. I haven’t been disappointed or regretted my decision at any of those steps. We use the Premium for the kids with car seats in the back, and the Performance is the car I usually drive. I will say, the difference is negligible between the two. I bought the acceleration boost (or whatever it’s called) for the Premium. The Performance is a bit quicker, but not noticeable with daily driving, especially because I use FSD 95% of the time. The Performance has a larger screen by something like 0.5”, but I don’t notice that. I thought the adaptive suspension would be more noticeable than it is, but the rides feel nearly identical (to be fair, that’s with 1” larger wheels on the Performance). The only real different I notice on a day to day basis are the thigh extensions in the seats. So — especially if you plan to use FSD a lot — I’d just buy whichever one you like the seats and styling more.

BetterGoogleit17 2026-03-03 13:23

Throttle House on YouTube gave your Mercedes a pretty abysmal review, so it makes sense to me why you would want to switch. I love my MYP.

Stocksinmypants 2026-03-03 13:27

In the same boat. Wish they updated the X and continued it would love it. But MYP is the way to go now. It's def not as "luxurious" but the tech and FSD is unparalleled. And yes we are a fam of 4 and take road trips in it now because surprisingly it fits a lot. the loaded sienna we bought before for that purpose now collects dust in the garage.

SkipperTheEyeChild1 2026-03-03 13:31

I had a model y. It’s the perfect practical car but I miss the luxury.

IrishMettle 2026-03-03 13:34

Agreed, nobody needs the MYP, it’s a want. If you want it and can afford it go for it! 😁 I have a MYP on order and paying cash.

Stocksinmypants 2026-03-03 13:37

I would love to step away from a Tesla but it boggles my mind that modern car companies have not figured out how to make tech that isn't glitchy or buggy. Why does it feel like the UI runs on a potato with a outdated unresponsive touchscreen on most cars. My brother traded in his BMW M3 for a M3P for the same reasons you listed above.

backcounty1029 2026-03-03 13:38

Do it!!! You're gonna love it. Reading your replies to some of these comments makes me feel like you know what you need to do... MYP!!

Vtecman 2026-03-03 13:42

I have a 22 MYP bought new. Never looked back. I love the driving experience. It’s unparalleled. The staggered tire costs add up but that’s the price to pay for the performance.

Heffeweizen 2026-03-03 13:42

OP I agree with all of your observations. Get a MYP!

AJHenderson 2026-03-03 13:46

I say go for it. We loved our MYP so much it became the family car and I swapped to an M3P.

brewton 2026-03-03 13:52

Just get some aftermarket wheels that are lighter and squared up so you can rotate. Improves performance and tire wear!

Puzzleheaded-Term921 2026-03-03 13:54

While you have some say why not get premium over performance. They are both fast .. don’t realize the extra perks in wheels , seats , carbon fiber wing , sports spoiler and ect . Honestly you’re gonna regret the premium once you see more performances out there . If you like the performance get it . I had two Mercedes GLE and while yes it has more luxury feel . The tech , the screen UI , the overall fun you have just driving a Tesla doesn’t compare , add on the Tesla app and FSD .. Tesla is just a simple clean beast in its own class

CryptoKnightKush 2026-03-03 13:59

And you can’t deny the way better look of the performance vs premium. The wheels and trim accents make a big difference. I’ve had the new MYP for a week now and it’s a blast.

Putrid-Box4866 2026-03-03 14:06

You like the car, you can afford it, I don’t understand what the hold up is? You already did you what you need exactly to decide.

optimusprimal99 2026-03-03 14:10

I think I just drove at least 10 different EV‘s last year with none of them planning to be a Tesla. After a friend forced me to test drive up on why there was no question if it was the right card to buy you’ll love it. Fsd is great too.

RickS50 2026-03-03 14:17

Just be aware that the service experience with Tesla is going to feel very sub par over your Mercedes. The car itself will be good.

Metsican 2026-03-03 14:47

100%. I know plenty of people complain about Tesla build quality and certain choices, like the door handles, and I don't disagree. But as daily drivers, our 3 and Y are just really, really good at the little things. Phone as a key always works, the climate scheduling is super easy, the app is the best car app I've seen, and the list goes on. Charging is dead simple, too, especially on roadtrips. The car is great at telling you where to stop and for how long, preconditions seamlessly, and never requires you to pull out payment. It all just works. All that said, before you get a Tesla, which you would probably enjoy, at least test drive a Rivian. They have many of the same advantages of a Tesla while also being more "plush". We're probably going to replace our Y with an R2. Depending on your timelines, an iX3 may also merit consideration.

MarketingGuy814 2026-03-03 15:27

I love the looks of the MYP, plus the seats are great!

MarketingGuy814 2026-03-03 15:27

FSD is a game changer -- it works really well. I think it's awesome.

MarketingGuy814 2026-03-03 15:28

My wife is adamant she doesn't want to take a road trip in the EQS because she worries about charging. So, worst-case scenario, we take her Volvo.

MarketingGuy814 2026-03-03 15:29

Awesome, just wanted to check that I wasn't insane for considering this change.

MarketingGuy814 2026-03-03 15:29

If you don't mind me asking, what do you have now?

MarketingGuy814 2026-03-03 15:30

I just wanted a sanity check from someone who made a similar change. I don't want to be blinded by the allure of the handling and tech, only to be disappointed down the road. I don't think I will be, but it's always good to hear from others.

MarketingGuy814 2026-03-03 15:30

Awesome!

MarketingGuy814 2026-03-03 15:31

Great feedback, thank you! I love the seats, styling and extra punch on the Performance. I think it's the winner!

Putrid-Box4866 2026-03-03 15:33

Just get it. Juniper is the gold standard of EVs right now as you've experienced it. The hardware is the training vehicles for robotaxis so if unsupervised FSD is coming in the next year or two, Juniper will definitely get it.

MarketingGuy814 2026-03-03 15:33

It's insane! I've tried Lexus, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Volvo, etc. and none of them have the tech dialed in. It honestly feels like everyone else is a Nokia flip phone while Tesla is an iPhone. Lucid and Rivian may be Blackberry level at this point. Lucid is out because the service center is too far away. Rivian is out because I prefer a sportier drive.

Stocksinmypants 2026-03-03 15:37

The best way I've heard it described is that most companies designs cars and then put in a computer as an afterthought. Tesla designs software and then builds a car around it.

Stocksinmypants 2026-03-03 15:38

FSD makes it such a breeze. I told her if she wants to us ton take the sienna we split the drive or I can take the Tesla and I'll drive the whole way no issues. now she doesn't mind stopping to charge lol

Zealousideal-Ant9548 2026-03-03 15:50

Tesla no longer ships with lane assist.  That's less tech than the eqs, no?

deztructo 2026-03-03 15:54

MY Performance will be a waste of money for you. MY Premium would be a better fit. You say money no object so just lease and get a different car next time your bored. Last purchase I was 50/50 on lease vs purchase. With Tesla EV's since they constantly improve and roll in minor upgrades, if you have the money, you'll be happier getting a new one next refresh is done.

Litig8or53 2026-03-03 16:18

No. Ever heard of FSD?

zapres 2026-03-03 16:38

Especially the bills will be “sub par” :)

ionlylandatlootlake 2026-03-03 17:22

Curious, how did you pay cash? Did you run that through the Tesla/Plaid? Wire? Cashiers Check? I see conflicting information online about what Tesla allows for cash payments in 2026.

Jman841 2026-03-03 17:22

Right through the App with PLAID. Linked my account and hit pay.

Jman841 2026-03-03 17:23

Have never had a single moment on this car without FSD. My car has Autopilot (Autosteer now), never used it once. With that said, I totally agree it was stupid for them to remove it. They should replace it with a restricted version of FSD that only works on highways and does not change lanes.

QuantParse 2026-03-03 17:24

Selling my loaded BMW X7 50i this week/next week and taking delivery of a Tesla Model Y performance later this month So am approximately in the same situation as the OP. Also have two kids but we have one other car. Also the second row legroom in the Tesla is MORE than our big SUV. I had been delaying for a few months hoping the Model Y L would be released in the US - but seems we will have to wait. Yes the luxury is less than my BMW for sure but the motivating factors for me were: -FSD. Absolute game changer. Don’t think I would ever buy another car without it. Will be even better with the coming voice controls. -BMW service stinks. At least where I live. Massive rip off every time you go. My BMWs have been reliable but none the less the dealer’s service and attitude are terrible and everything is costly. -Tech. I consider BMW to be best in class tech aside from Tesla. But Tesla is even better. Everything just works better with all the OTA updates. And having Grok built in is amazing. I greatly prefer the luxury and looks and fit and finish of the BMW but these other factors make it an easy choice. I didn’t need the performance Model Y for performance but needed the thigh extenders. If Model Y L comes out in the USA we will likely move to that at some point.

QuantParse 2026-03-03 17:32

I went to look at the Rivian and they are nice cars but autonomy software is nowhere close to Tesla just now. And the Rivian R2 coming out now will only be their Gen2. Without lidar. Later they will sell it with lidar to be their gen3. Might reconsider them at gen3 and when their self driving software improves. They have a small window to succeed before the Nvidia Alpamayo platform is available on other manufacturers more broadly. So they might make it, or if they are too slow then people might prefer Nvidia’s platform on more well known auto manufacturers. I don’t want to take the gamble just now. Some of the YouTube reviewers I watch love Rivians but have had a lot of problems with theirs. Battery and other issues. Tesla largely already been through these teething problems.

ionlylandatlootlake 2026-03-03 17:35

That's what I was afraid of LOL. Would prefer not to link my mobile banking with Plaid, but may have to.

QuantParse 2026-03-03 17:36

I will be taking delivery of a performance instead of premium later this month. I don’t care at all about performance and just got it for the thigh extenders. They make the color choices free if you get the performance so for a premium AWD black ext/ white interior/ 20” tires the lease is $737/month. The performance is $799/month. (Plus FSD) So smaller difference than one might expect.

Jman841 2026-03-03 17:40

Just out of curiosity, what’s the issue with plaid?

RickS50 2026-03-03 17:47

There is that, but don't expect a loaner or a quick appointment.

ionlylandatlootlake 2026-03-03 17:54

Would prefer not to give a third party login credentials, access, insight, etc. to my banking info. They say it's all perfectly safe of course, but you know how that goes...

slayernfc 2026-03-03 17:59

Just do it, you are over thinking it, you have the money, do it.

Zealousideal-Ant9548 2026-03-03 19:51

Which you now need to subscribe to on a monthly basis

wimbledonindian 2026-03-03 20:39

Seems like the new MYP is the one to go for... and you can't go wrong. Drives great, great viz, all the latest and greatest stuff, good seats, feels very airy inside, really good sound system, etc. I have one and love it... but I also test drove the Cyber Beast and I cannot stop thinking about either giving this MYP to my dad or wife... and getting da Beast! That steer-by-wire is nuts!

jperm47 2026-03-03 21:40

I went the other way and downgraded my Model Y Performance order to Premium. I was hoping for incentives to come along but seeing as the Performance is a long lead time and more niche I don't think that's happening. If incentives are coming in Q1 they will be on the Standard/Premium and not performance which will create a large enough gap on pricing imo Also I plan to FSD a lot so not sure performance will be worth it

Litig8or53 2026-03-04 04:06

True. But well worth it.

MarketingGuy814 2026-03-04 21:41

I just want to thank everyone for your replies, insights, and opinions. It's all been very helpful! Today, I was able to take a Model Y Performance for an extended test drive. Ordered one right after with a March-April delivery window. Can't wait for the adventures!
