Clean it asap after buggy drives. Or use a foaming bug cleaner that does most of the work for you. Longer term you could do a ceramic coating on the bumper so they wash off easier if you live somewhere frequently buggy

No need to get PPF. And if you are talking about windshield protection "films" then those things are more trouble than they are worth. You don't need thousands of dollars just to remove bugs on your car.
All you need is soapy water, a bug sponge and some elbow grease. No, you will not scratch the paint in any noticeable way. If you want to make your life a little easier, you can get a bug spray. They soften up the bugs.
Bugs and poop on the windshield are no different than any other car. In fact, they are easier to clean than bugs on the bumper, because glass is very hard. For bugs, I use just plain water and a rough sponge like the Scour Daddy. Don't bother with a bug spray on the windshield because I've seen them cause stains.
For poops, just use water and paper towels.
And finally, stay away from detailing YouTube unless you want to be convinced that you need to spend $5000 to have a car with a skin that starts peeling off after 5-10 years (PPF) and/or slightly harder to get wet (ceramic coating).
TL;DR. Teslas are not that special. You can treat them just like any other car (with a few exceptions i.e. the black trim does discolor on some touchless car washes)

3D bug remover is the best product I’ve used. Buy the jug on Amazon, you’ll need it. Spray on 5 minutes before you wash your car and the bugs will just slide off with the hose, no scrubbing required. Great stuff.

Drape wet bath towels over the front for 15 minutes to soften up the bugs. About half a towel over the hood for friction to hold it in place, and the other half pressed against the contours of the bumper. After 15 minute, wash as usual.

This works amazingly well!! I’ve used it for the front of a high camper that hadn’t been washed for a few years.
I put a dryer sheet in a squirt bottle (with water) and used another as my wash cloth.

Depending on how stuck they are, a high pressure hose around 50-60cm away does a good job. Just make sure you use a wide fan tip and not a pinpoint and use long sweeping motions as to not damage your paint.

I’ve tried many products and 3D Bug Remover is the best. You can see it dissolve the bugs almost on contact. You’re supposed to not let them dry out but when it’s 110 outside and you’re going 70, there’s no way around it.

2026-03-03 03:30
Yes it will cause micro scratches if you rub the dryer sheets hard on the paint.
Funny enough, when I first heard of this many years ago, the exact same thought crossed my mind. But curiosity got the better of me. I used fresh, very well soaked fryer sheets and the bugs came off with minimal pressure. Then I read someone saying you don't need to use the dryer sheets. Just soak it in water and then use that water in a spray bottle to spray it onto the bumper and wipe it off with a microfibre. It blew my mind that that worked just as well. The only issue is that you'll have to wash the bumper with car soap and water after or it'll leave a residue on the bumper.
I then found out about 3D bug and tar remover. I dilute that and spray it on. It uses enzymes to digest the dead bug. I wait five minutes and then wash it off with some water. Been doing that for around 5 years now. Zero issues in any of the cars I've done it to. 3D bug and tar remover is the best product I've used.
I'd go with either of the methods above. I'd personally use the dryer sheets since most people have it at home and wash the car anyways. I use 3D bug and tar remover after road trips in the summer and when the car isn't dirty enough to warrant an immediate full wash.

If they sit really tight you can take couple of towels, get them dripping wet with the washing liquid and then apply the towels to the bumper so that the towels keeps the bumper and bugs wet for 5-10 min. Then they will come more easily off.

That is not true have you tried it or just speculating? I have been doing that for 3 yrs now. No swirls or marks. Use good lubricant + degreaser first. Bugs have acid + protein. You'd need to spray with a bug cleaner and let it soak for about 3-4 minutes. Then take a dryer sheet and gently remove everything. Then do the wash and use some sort of protection after (like Griots 3 in 1 ceramic).

In ‘23 when I got my model Y we took it on a 2300 mile road trip immediately after taking possession. Along the way we used 3D bug & tar remover (following directions) and made sure to do this every night when we stopped. IMO, the very best thing you can do with a Tesla (their paint is shitty) is to wrap it before any damage or chipping. Expensive but cheaper than a paint job! Or look into aftermarket clear coating. I did neither and regret it.

Get a bottle of all purpose cleaner (apc) for cars (make sure it is pre diluted or dilute it per instructions) and spray it on and let it sit for few minutes (don’t put it on in the sun or onto hot surfaces) and don’t let it dry on the surfaces. Then use a garden hose sprayer or pressure washer to loosen and remove the debris. Then used foam car soap and soft sponge or microfiber towel to gently remove any stubborn pieces.
Apc is highly alkaline so make sure you dilute it properly.
After it’s been cleaned up, depending on your budget, you can ceramic coat the front or use spray ceramic sealant to make future removal easier.
