HW3 or HW4 Model Y

holygr4il | 2026-03-02 21:25 | 3 views

In the market for a new vehicle and currently deciding between for a 2022 MYP with 38k miles for 31K OTD or a 2023 MYP with HW4 and 45k miles for $33.5k OTD. Both directly from Tesla. I’m not sure if I want FSD, it sounds cool and maybe will use it for commuting in the near future. Ideally want to own the car for 5+ years. Any advice is appreciated

$2500 gets you a car with the latest available FSD hardware and a model year newer. If you have any significant interest in using FSD, that sounds like the better option. Both will increase your resale value. HW3 is at the end of the line. It has probably gotten about as good as its going to get.

If you plan to use FSD, the HW4 one for sure. Keep in mind the basic warranty is basically over in about 5000 miles.

As soon as basic warranty ends the used vehicle 1 year 10k warranty begins so that’s another bonus.

Ah yeah, I forgot Tesla offers that.

Used performance? If you are asking then neither. A Y performance for someone asking is even more non-sensical.

I have a HW3 car, and just bought a HW4 car this weekend that I’ll be trading it in. The FSD using HW4 is like an entirely different product. Seriously cannot emphasize enough how much better it is. I consciously don’t use it on my HW3 car even though I paid for it in full upfront years ago. It hasn’t gotten an update in over a year. The latest and greatest truly feels like an uber driver.

If you are going to use FSD then hw4 is a no brainer.

HW4 all the way. FSD is the future of driving. I am in year 5 with MYLR and love it, but covet HW4.

The difference between hw3 and hw4 is dramatic and likely permanent. Get the hw4.

HW4.

Hw4

Having driven them both, it really comes down to whether or not you want FSD. The autopilot performance is otherwise identical. Keep in mind that HW5 will be out next year so HW3 and HW4 will end up in the same boat. Personally I'd pay the extra $2.5k for HW4 and a car that's a year newer. But both are good cars.

Do the used cars from Tesla still have autopilot? I was looking through some listings and they only mentioned FSD subscription. I just assumed they soft-deleted autopilot from used stock as well (to mirror the new ones).
