Mobile charger button won't open charger port

Nyankittyboiii | 2026-03-02 16:53 | 35 views

Hi, I got a Tesla Model Y RWD Standard 2026 (Europe) a week ago. My mobile charger won't open the charger port with the integrated button, but the button can unlock the port after charging. So the signal seems to work. I did a hard and soft reset. Opening the port via mobile app and on the car screen works. I tried another power outlet. My car is definitely unlocked and doesn't sleep. I got a Tesla Service appointement in 4 weeks, but I hoped, maybe I can solve it before. Thanks in advance!

Does the charger have power?

forknmybut 2026-03-02 16:57

Following this. Mine has been broken for a while and thought it was just the charger.

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 16:58

Yes, charging works perfectly and unlocking via button aswell

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 17:01

I've read a 2 years reddit post in which they claimed that a software update solved the issue.

pardipp 2026-03-02 17:05

i don’t have a tesla but i’ve seen people tap the rear taillight, i thought it was dumb but maybe it’s due to this

ThanksALotBud 2026-03-02 17:05

Open your door to wake the car up.

iamyatsu 2026-03-02 17:06

Seems like many people have this issue. Even changing the charging port within the car will not fix it, it will reoccur. Even the Tesla sales rep who owns the new 2026 MY has the same issue. Hope Tesla finds a true fix for this.

Emergency-Purchase27 2026-03-02 17:08

Have you tried tapping it? That’s what I have always done, I tap the charging door with the charger.

solarsystemoccupant 2026-03-02 17:08

Mine does this sometimes. When it does I just touch the port for it to open. Never let it worry me.

joyspeed 2026-03-02 17:08

I have this happen to me sometimes, what works is: taking the phone out of my pocket. If I am feeling lazy, lightly tap the port with my finger.

ManitoN 2026-03-02 17:09

Had this issue, the charger port was replaced. Also had a warning on my notifications about the broken port.

ckybam69 2026-03-02 17:12

mine will do this randomly sometimes. Usually the car is not awake so I pop a door open then it works. Soemtimes just easier to manually tap the charge port door on the car after 20 button clicks lol.

TheLegendaryWizard 2026-03-02 17:12

Just tap the charger on the port cover and it should open right up

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 17:13

I already tried :(

GamerInfinity1996 2026-03-02 17:14

My garage charger doesnt open mine either.

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 17:14

You mean putting physically pressure on the port? Yeah that works.

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 17:15

How long did it take to replace it? Within a day?

Aerottawa 2026-03-02 17:16

Mine 2025 Canadian RWD does this a lot. Had to wake up the car and press the button 5+ times to get the door open. Sometimes it just doesn't open and I had to press the charger door to get it to open. It's quite annoying.

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 17:16

Okay, I will try it. Thanks :)

ManitoN 2026-03-02 17:16

There were multiple issues so the car stayed in the service center for a few days.

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 17:18

True. I tapping always works.

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 17:18

Okay, thanks.

thewetbandits 2026-03-02 17:19

This happens to me sometimes. It's weird, sometime it works fine, sometimes it doesn't and I have to use the app or press the charge port to get it to open.

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 17:20

Do you plan to make a tesla service appointement or do you just accept it?

Tasty_Action5073 2026-03-02 17:26

I did not know that’s how you open the port. I just touch the door with my hand and it opens. 😂

craig1f 2026-03-02 17:27

That button is flaky in the best of times. I usually just tap the charge port. I only use the button if the car is asleep. Taping the port doesn't work when it's asleep.

slick_p 2026-03-02 17:29

Holdup…pressing the button on the charger handle will open the charge port on the car?!

Sufficient_Water_326 2026-03-02 17:31

Hold back left door handle for 5 seconds

sevargmas 2026-03-02 17:34

Mine was doing this for a long time and I finally asked ChatGPT and it solved the problem immediately. It said to check if my key was disconnected. That didn’t make any sense to me since I use my Tesla every day, but I went in the app to security & drivers and sure enough, my key was disconnected. I went out to my car with my phone and my key card and reconnected it and boom, the charger opens the port now.

Heffhop 2026-03-02 17:37

Sorry, I have no advice. However Why does that charger look different than mine?

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 17:39

It's a German charger

Life-Situation-5201 2026-03-02 17:43

Same! I was like, there is a button on the charger?!

system3601 2026-03-02 17:47

The car is locked or your key/phone is far away

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 17:50

No :(

Original-Material301 2026-03-02 17:51

I've recently had the same issue as OP. I figured out I sometimes need to take my phone out and lightly tap the charging port. Same with my tailgate, it sometimes doesn't respond to pressing the button on the tailgate but will after I take out my phone lol. Dunno why it's so temperamental.

GamerInfinity1996 2026-03-02 17:52

I have had it in to them before for other things and they said they tested it and couldn't find a problem

PghSubie 2026-03-02 17:55

Confirm that the car is awake and the doors are unlocked

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 17:56

I did :(

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 17:57

Didnt work.

Sufficient_Water_326 2026-03-02 17:57

It was added after last update. Is your car fully updated?

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 17:59

I checked it. I am connected and I opened the driver's door aswell. But thanks!

PunkAintDead 2026-03-02 17:59

My first guess is the car is locked even if it's awake ? I would take it to a supercharger and see if you can replicate the issue, then you'll know if the issue is with the car or the charger

Revolutionary_Truck3 2026-03-02 18:03

Sometimes it doesn't work. Use the multi methods unfortunately. #1 Tap the Door #2 Press button on charger #3 Open with app on phone #4 Open in Car in screen #5 Look in Emergency release

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 18:03

It says it is up to date. Software Version 2026.2.6

Sufficient_Water_326 2026-03-02 18:04

Tesla site: Tesla now allows drivers to stop charging and unlock the cable by pulling and holding the rear left door handle for three seconds, provided the car is unlocked and a key is nearby. This feature helps with stuck connectors or third-party chargers and works as a quick release.

mmerken 2026-03-02 18:05

Is this the mobile connector? It's not supposed to be used outdoors. Mine failed after 2 years, corrosion got into the part where the button should be. Tesla told me to get a new mobile connector. I eventually installed the Wall Connector, which is rated for outdoor use.

w1lnx 2026-03-02 18:08

What happens when you press the charge door with your hand or with the charge connector? Only asking because it might be a workaround until you have the Service Appointment.

boonwin_ 2026-03-02 18:09

It does it sometimes I just smack that thing on the Port

EnanoAD 2026-03-02 18:13

I had no idea the button opened it. I’ve always just smacked the door with the charger to open.

Solaphobe 2026-03-02 18:15

I made a similar post 7 years ago when i got my model 3 and boy was i in for some angry downvotes. Haha. Most comments were of the RTFM sort.

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 18:16

Mine is 3 days old :D

Stakalicious 2026-03-02 18:16

Had this happen to me sometimes. There will be days when it works on first click... But more often than not I have to click it multiple times. If it doesn't open in the first 15 seconds of me clicking and holding the button, I just tap the cover and it opens. Not gonna sit there all day clicking.

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 18:17

Yeah tapping works fortunately!

Solaphobe 2026-03-02 18:18

It's less a button and more a colored "dot" on the handle, so it's easy to miss. Took me months to figure that out when I got my car.

Armaced 2026-03-02 18:22

Is the screen dead after opening the door? If so, have you tried a soft reboot (hold both buttons on the steering wheel down for like ten seconds)?

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 18:23

Screen is on and I made as soft and also a hard reset

jmaddr 2026-03-02 18:33

Mine has the EXACT issue. Verify the car by going to a supercharger and pressing that button to open. If it does, it’s the charger. For me, it was fairly obvious what the issue was… I had a lightning strike near the charger. Funny thing though is the charger still charges just fine and has done so for 2 years since the strike. You could also use a friend with a Tesla to see if it opens theirs. If both work just fine, don’t bother going to Tesla, it’s your charger.

mmerken 2026-03-02 18:34

It might just be a faulty unit then (:

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 18:36

Thanks I will try that!

Thick_Dependent_7103 2026-03-02 18:41

I have the opposite issue. I can open to chance, but not open after charging to take it out

Turbulent_Type1999 2026-03-02 18:49

Interestingly, Tesla has removed the NFC capability for the Charge Port to be opened by pressing the button on a Mobile Connector, Wall Connector, or Supercharger handle. Tesla states that “some vehicle variants may not detect when you press the button on the charging cable.” [https://www.notateslaapp.com/news/3242/the-standard-tesla-experience-more-feature-cuts-revealed](https://www.notateslaapp.com/news/3242/the-standard-tesla-experience-more-feature-cuts-revealed)

RedHenk 2026-03-02 18:54

The new Standard y does not have this functionality. Does not work on mine either

dmendro 2026-03-02 19:05

I mean I just tap on my pet cover and it opens up.

Valaj369 2026-03-02 19:09

Charger port replacement can be done by Tesla mobile service. My car has this issue when I first got it. A warning also popped up under the notification section. I had a Tesla mobile service appointment for a faulty hood latch (that was replaced in under a minute). I asked him about it (I didn't put in a request though because it worked fine after that one incident but the error kept popping up (though it's been a year now since the mesaage popped up)). He said put in a request and that the charging port door would be replaced. Said it won't take much time at all and that mobile service can do it.

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-02 19:48

This might be the answer. I already thought something like that. I asked Google and Chatgpt explicit about the standard version, but maybe they dont see the difference between Premium and standard Model Y. Thanks allot!

sriva041 2026-03-02 20:44

It doesn’t work in 2020 MY anymore either.

RedditUser7843526 2026-03-02 21:17

The new Juniper Model Ys combined the RF receiver for the charge port button into the same module as UWB and BLE. This module lives in the bumper, under the taillight. Hold your connector in that area instead and it should work. I had this exact complaint with mine and had mobile service out twice to fix it (both times the tech agreed it wasn’t working as expected); on the second time he found a blurb in the owners’ manual that the connector should be held by the bumper instead. Once we figured out that small piece, it’s worked much better for me. It’s still not nearly as sensitive as my pre-refresh Model 3 (I used to be able to push the button > 1 car length away and it would work) and I’m sad about that fact. EDIT to clarify: I have two ‘26 Model Ys now, and both exhibit the same behavior with the connector needing held by the bumper. One of them replaced a ‘23 Model 3, which worked “normally” to what was expected. This behavior exists on two chargers in different locations, so it’s not the charger for sure.

Technical_Name_8385 2026-03-02 21:19

It's either the UMC or the charge port door. Either can be replaced within a few hours

Difficult-Text8042 2026-03-02 21:39

This happens with one of my mobile connectors but not the other.

YouKidsGetOffMyYard 2026-03-02 21:46

Mine does this every night and has for years, Do you have sentry on at home? if not then your car is going to sleep a few minutes after the last door closes and pressing the button on the charger won't wake it, Open the rear door first and I bet then the button will work. When my car is asleep pushing on the charging cover won't open it either. Edit: Actually my son's Tesla also acts this way and it has a seperate charger.

SpikeyTwitch20 2026-03-02 21:49

Standard Model Y does not have the required UHF hardware for that style of charge handle to open it. You can still press the charge port door, center screen, button on the key (if you have one) or button on the app to open the port. Only BLE chargers (currently only V4 superchargers) will open the door via the button on the charge handle.

YouKidsGetOffMyYard 2026-03-02 21:50

So even though you can just tap the cover to open it you went ahead and put in a service ticket to get the button fixed? I know it "should" work but does it really matter if it doesn't? just saying, I would not waste my time with it..

choerd 2026-03-02 22:59

Could also be a broken button on the handle. I have even noticed this on some superchargers. It usually works as expected but sometimes the button doesn't appear to work.

iamyatsu 2026-03-02 23:03

That’s why best to test with the older models and see if it is a button issue or not. Mine works with other older models except the new 2026 MY.

Robocup1 2026-03-03 00:20

Totaled.

eighties80s 2026-03-03 00:40

There’s a little magnet/metal piece behind the lid. It’s located on the lower left of the lid. When you look behind the lid and it’s not there, that’s your issue 100%.

Kwormie 2026-03-03 01:17

I have a 2024 model Y and had this issue. Opened up a support case with the app, and service guy showed up and gave me a new charger. Said they see it happen a lot.

fjwi9 2026-03-03 01:50

This. The standard variants don’t support the remote button anymore.

Remarkable-Owl-5712 2026-03-03 02:14

hold the speak commands button and ask it to open it's butthole. seriously it works

Horror-Table152 2026-03-03 02:28

STANDARD models do not open with a charging handle request due to not having a rear Bluetooth module. You can open the charge port door via touch, phone or your screen. This is not an issue and normal for standard models.

Poncherelly 2026-03-03 02:59

This happened all the time with my 2020MY and I thought it was that car. I now have the 2026MY and it does the same thing. Funny though because my wife’s 2025 M3 doesn’t do it ever. It’s also not the car being asleep. I can back into my garage, grab the wand and press the button and it still won’t open on occasion.

Wants-NotNeeds 2026-03-03 04:31

Mine’s been intermittent for as long as I can remember. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Always when I touch the port cover, it opens. So, that’s what I do if it pressing the button in the charger doesn’t open the charge port. Never thought to have it diagnosed as it’s not a big deal. IDK if it’s Bluetooth or WiFi related or what. Mild annoyance.

fatherunit72 2026-03-03 04:39

Probably not what you’re supposed to do, but I just poke the door with the charger once or twice and it opens

Betelgez 2026-03-03 07:06

TIL you can open the charger port by pressing a button on a charger.

Dave_Marsh 2026-03-03 07:37

Just press the cover and it will pop open.

Manyconnections 2026-03-03 09:54

Tap the door at the. Bottom it will open up with that slight pressure

aim4squirrels 2026-03-03 11:03

Mine is flaky, but what seems to work 100% of the time is holding the charger wand behind the tail light, and in toward the center of the car just a bit. Kinda like you totally and completely missed when trying to plug it in, then tap the button.

Primary-User 2026-03-03 11:21

Touch the charger flap and it will open

Best-Republic 2026-03-03 11:41

Does it open at the supercharger or Tesla approved chargers other than the one you are using? IMHO. I would have checked that before opening a service ticket. It could be as simple as a bad connection on your plug.

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-03 12:21

I will try it. The car is brand new and the tesla staff said to me that I have to report all issues within 24 hours after delivery via app.

bunebune 2026-03-03 13:18

Mine never works, but it isn’t actually a problem for me

Arth3r911 2026-03-03 14:46

Wake it up! It’s sleeping. Mine does this like it has a mind of its own. I open the door like “bitch wake up!” lol

fire4lives 2026-03-03 16:13

Das ist völlig normales Verhalten! Das Juniper Standard unterstützt diese Funktion mit dem UMC Charger und den TeslaSuperChargern nicht. Die ChargePort ECU ist nicht die gleiche wie beim PremiumModell.

Warm-Recognition-768 2026-03-03 22:38

Hit the open charger button in the app?

DIY_CHRIS 2026-03-04 02:42

Happens to be when my vehicle hasn’t connected yet to the WiFi, same network of the charger.

fitfam5 2026-03-04 03:31

Is your phone in your pocket?

National-Suspect-733 2026-03-04 06:10

I just poke the charger port with the charger when this happens like a virgin who can‘t find the hole.

Best-Republic 2026-03-04 07:29

Oh. Ok. Good luck. Share what you find out at Tesla.

Birdboy7 2026-03-04 08:55

My Shanghai made Model Y is perfect. Berlin made cars have issues

boshta 2026-03-04 16:34

I second that. 2026 Standard M3 with a Wall Connector. Button on the Handle doesnt do anything, also button on a supercharger doesnt open the charging port. I thought it was just me and i have to connect something (although my car and the wallconnector are both in the app). I just tap the port and it opens... Less hassle than taking out my phone, opening the app and tapping on the charging port on the phone screen.

Drcashman 2026-03-04 19:47

I have a m3 (nacs) but it seems like if I am too close to the door with the connector handle I have this issue. By holding the further away it seems to have no issues.

smh_photo 2026-03-05 09:54

It doesn’t work for me when it is really cold outside. Was it cold weather?

CapRevolutionary7380 2026-03-06 19:08

Is this confirmed by Tesla? I opened a service request and they are still looking into it? If it would be the case they would have closed my request immediately with this explanation

Horror-Table152 2026-03-07 05:14

They’re still looking into it because the info isn’t fully listed. Friend has his looked at and then they confirmed standard Ys have to opened with touching the door, your app, or the touchscreen. Part of the cost saving measures.

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-11 18:06

Tried a tesla super charger two times. It didn't work either. I think it's a missing feature of the base model Y as some redditors suggested.

Nyankittyboiii 2026-03-12 10:05

I just had a phone call with my local tesla service. They tested multiple of their Model Y standard and confirmed the abscence of the NFC capability.
