Seems like many people have this issue. Even changing the charging port within the car will not fix it, it will reoccur. Even the Tesla sales rep who owns the new 2026 MY has the same issue. Hope Tesla finds a true fix for this.

Mine was doing this for a long time and I finally asked ChatGPT and it solved the problem immediately. It said to check if my key was disconnected. That didn’t make any sense to me since I use my Tesla every day, but I went in the app to security & drivers and sure enough, my key was disconnected. I went out to my car with my phone and my key card and reconnected it and boom, the charger opens the port now.

Tesla site:
Tesla now allows drivers to stop charging and unlock the cable by pulling and holding the rear left door handle for three seconds, provided the car is unlocked and a key is nearby. This feature helps with stuck connectors or third-party chargers and works as a quick release.

Is this the mobile connector? It's not supposed to be used outdoors.
Mine failed after 2 years, corrosion got into the part where the button should be. Tesla told me to get a new mobile connector. I eventually installed the Wall Connector, which is rated for outdoor use.

Mine has the EXACT issue. Verify the car by going to a supercharger and pressing that button to open. If it does, it’s the charger.
For me, it was fairly obvious what the issue was… I had a lightning strike near the charger. Funny thing though is the charger still charges just fine and has done so for 2 years since the strike. You could also use a friend with a Tesla to see if it opens theirs. If both work just fine, don’t bother going to Tesla, it’s your charger.

Interestingly, Tesla has removed the NFC capability for the Charge Port to be opened by pressing the button on a Mobile Connector, Wall Connector, or Supercharger handle. Tesla states that “some vehicle variants may not detect when you press the button on the charging cable.”

Charger port replacement can be done by Tesla mobile service. My car has this issue when I first got it. A warning also popped up under the notification section. I had a Tesla mobile service appointment for a faulty hood latch (that was replaced in under a minute). I asked him about it (I didn't put in a request though because it worked fine after that one incident but the error kept popping up (though it's been a year now since the mesaage popped up)). He said put in a request and that the charging port door would be replaced. Said it won't take much time at all and that mobile service can do it.

The new Juniper Model Ys combined the RF receiver for the charge port button into the same module as UWB and BLE. This module lives in the bumper, under the taillight. Hold your connector in that area instead and it should work. I had this exact complaint with mine and had mobile service out twice to fix it (both times the tech agreed it wasn’t working as expected); on the second time he found a blurb in the owners’ manual that the connector should be held by the bumper instead. Once we figured out that small piece, it’s worked much better for me. It’s still not nearly as sensitive as my pre-refresh Model 3 (I used to be able to push the button > 1 car length away and it would work) and I’m sad about that fact.
EDIT to clarify: I have two ‘26 Model Ys now, and both exhibit the same behavior with the connector needing held by the bumper. One of them replaced a ‘23 Model 3, which worked “normally” to what was expected. This behavior exists on two chargers in different locations, so it’s not the charger for sure.

Mine does this every night and has for years, Do you have sentry on at home? if not then your car is going to sleep a few minutes after the last door closes and pressing the button on the charger won't wake it, Open the rear door first and I bet then the button will work. When my car is asleep pushing on the charging cover won't open it either.
Edit: Actually my son's Tesla also acts this way and it has a seperate charger.

Standard Model Y does not have the required UHF hardware for that style of charge handle to open it.
You can still press the charge port door, center screen, button on the key (if you have one) or button on the app to open the port.
Only BLE chargers (currently only V4 superchargers) will open the door via the button on the charge handle.

So even though you can just tap the cover to open it you went ahead and put in a service ticket to get the button fixed? I know it "should" work but does it really matter if it doesn't? just saying, I would not waste my time with it..

STANDARD models do not open with a charging handle request due to not having a rear Bluetooth module. You can open the charge port door via touch, phone or your screen. This is not an issue and normal for standard models.

This happened all the time with my 2020MY and I thought it was that car. I now have the 2026MY and it does the same thing. Funny though because my wife’s 2025 M3 doesn’t do it ever.

Mine’s been intermittent for as long as I can remember. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Always when I touch the port cover, it opens. 2026 Standard M3 with a Wall Connector. Button on the Handle doesnt do anything, also button on a supercharger doesnt open the charging port.
