Truck to Electric

Impossible-Yard4810 | 2026-03-02 12:23 | 5 views

Currently own a 2025 RAM and came to the realization I probably dont need such a large vehicle if I am not towing. Curious though for those that switched from a truck to a Model Y, did you have any regrets? Plugged a lot of info into Ai and it tells me to make the switch but I wanted to hear what actual people think and not Ai.

Ai usually tells you what you want to hear. The newness of your truck wore off. Same thing would happen with the Tesla. Insurance will probably offset gas savings.

Making life choices based on AI. 🤣 Fuck AI. AI is the dumbest thing that billionaires have everybody hooked on for some fucked up reason. Stop using that garbage. If you want a Y, get a Y. Teslas are amazing vehicles to drive. The company sucks, has shitty policies and procedures, and a greedy asshole as a CEO, but the cars are great.

I had a Ram a few vehicles back. It was a fine vehicle for the short time I had it, but I just hated driving it. Big to park, barely fit in my garage, wide, etc. This isn't a slam on Ram, I just don't like driving large trucks. I like nearly everything better about the Model Y. Fast, close to zero maintenance, charges for cheap in my garage, tech is constantly getting updated, the future of FSD, American made, etc. It feels like I'm going back to horse/buggy when I have to drive an ICE vehicle. About once a year there will be something we have to haul where it would be nice to have a truck, but then I'd have to drive that truck the other 364 days a year. I take about 4 trips over 300 miles a year, which is the only time i have to use public chargers, and the Tesla software makes that easy. It's going to take a lot for us to not buy another tesla when it's time to get rid of our ICE vehicle. A couple things to think about: 1. You really need to be able to charge at home 2. Your insurance will likely be more expensive.

Shop around the insurance - i pay less now than i did in my tacoma. End of the day, i feel like i have more useable cargo space, and the things i did tow (small trailers around town, and two seadoos) i can still tow in the model y, so it was a win win all around for me. The truth is, my truck was a pavement princess and my wallet is better off for having got rid of it and my life is simpler/easier driving an EV.

I own both an f150 and a model Y.  Once I sell my camper I’ll probably sell the truck as well. Th truck is nice to have around for towing and the rare dump run but I find the y to be more comfortable and convenient for everything else.  I use the truck so little now that I literally have not put gas in it since September. Even in the snow I find that with a good set of tires on it I prefer the model y’s Awd to the f150’s 4x4 until the snow on the roads gets deeper than about 6 or 7 inches.  In almost thirty years of driving this is the first time I’ve ever honestly considered not having a truck if that tells you anything.

iguessma 2026-03-02 12:48

Stupidest thing I've read all day.

[deleted] 2026-03-02 13:05

The ride of the Y is stiff and uncomfortable on bumpy roads. That's a huge difference for you.

ajn63 2026-03-02 13:07

I still keep the truck for real truck stuff. Ironically it stays on a charger to keep its starter battery from dying. And stop using ai for life decisions.

Famous_Ordinary_6340 2026-03-02 13:15

So I had a 2012 F350 6.7 powerstroke loved the truck it was my baby had a carli pintop 60 gal tank all the accessories. However sold the boat sold the sxs sold the trailer and something more economical seemed to make sense Espically since my job now involved going downtown and parking garages. I got a 26 myp and love it gets me everywhere comfortably and good range I just road tripped to Kentucky from Texas and had a blast never thought I’d like electric cars as much as I do. Only down side now my wife wants one too

Greenjeeper2001 2026-03-02 13:17

This has improved with iterations.

I have driven a half-ton pickup as a daily driver for most of my life. Last time I felt the desire to upgrade, I decided to just keep the truck I have and purchase a 2nd vehicle for a new daily driver. Initially bought a 2023 Civic, but absolutely hated that car. Last year I ended up trading it for a 2026 Model Y and it’s my favorite vehicle I have owned to date. My wife was initially against buying an EV because of all the typical outdated arguments. Now she drives it any chance she gets. The Tesla is super quiet, comfortable, has instant torque, and crazy acceleration. It’s a lot of fun to drive, and it’s very inexpensive charging at home. I’m averaging $50 or less per month for ~1,200 miles. Just make sure you have your charging solution figured out before buying an EV. Install a hardwired charger if possible.

Mr-Zappy 2026-03-02 13:28

EVs depreciate a lot, so consider buying used. Only get an EV if you can charge at home. I’m frustrated at Tesla’s poor quality and the fact they closed the service center near me so I had to drive 100 miles round trip when I need service. Next winter, I may have to take the gas car for some long trips due to continued battery degradation and the fact that Tesla hasn’t put any new Superchargers in a gap of over 120 miles. (This winter it had me Supercharging to 93% and if the battery degrades as much in year 5 as it did in year 4, next year it’ll tell me to Supercharge to 98% to arrive with 10%. While technically still doable, Supercharging is slow above 80% and really slow above 90%.) If you want a bed still, the Maverick hybrid is a great truck.

Fine-Material-6863 2026-03-02 13:33

It’s become a lot better, just upgraded from MY 2022 recently, the ride is A LOT smoother. I hated counting every tiniest seam on the roads that were not even visually bumpy.

Klutzy_Disk_8433 2026-03-02 13:45

It's still early in the day. I'm positive you will hear some more stupidity on reddit

Klutzy_Disk_8433 2026-03-02 13:52

My wife and I own 4 vehicles. Chevy 2500 diesel, Chevy sonic, Kia niro hybrid, and a model y. I probably drive the model y the most even tho it's technically my wife's car. Definitely the easiest/smartest car to drive. Also for us it's basically free to drive since I can charge at home with solar. But I'm a man and I do love my diesel truck lol. We live very rural and own a ranch so the truck is a must.

D1TAC 2026-03-02 14:03

I miss my truck honestly. I miss the room it had, even if I didn't tow all the time that's the biggest thing I miss about it. So much so that my next car after this EV is given to my wife, will be to get a EV truck. Thats the only complaint I have about the Y. Maybe the X would be the better step up or a CT, but depends on others financial positions. You must be able to charge at home, it's really the only way to have a pleasant experience. Insurance for me was actually cheaper then my Denali was. The pros - the torque is instant, virtually no maintenance, the UI experience from the Phone app to the car itself is revolutionary. FSD is also a great experience if you're willing to pay, I find myself driving more with the Tesla because of how inexpensive it is to maintain and drive, it's been a great ownership so far. Only wish for me was a little more interior room.

Illustrious-Tap-7690 2026-03-02 14:11

Prior to my MY I drove a Ram before that was an F150. In 2 years of ownership I've had 3 situations where I would have liked a truck to haul big things. 2 of those times I made it work and the 3rd time I borrowed a family member's truck (thought I could have rented one at Home Depot for $20 for the one hour I needed it). I've never regretted my decision as I do not NEED a truck 99% of the time. The truck was nice on road trips because we could put everything in the bed and just have the cab for people and snacks but the MY has ample storage space to still meet our needs. I don't ever tow anything that necessitates a truck so that was a non-issue for me. The MY handles my little trailer and 700lb payload just fine. The one thing I can think of that I've really missed is just the overall size of a truck. Even with a rear-facing car seat in my Ram I could put the driver's seat all the way back and not touch the child seat. I could flip up the back seat and have a huge space for the dog to freely roam around. Long story short, I sometimes miss elements of the truck, but not enough to ever make me regret my decision or feel the need to go back to a truck (unless the 49k Cybertruck ever happens)

antimagamagma 2026-03-02 14:13

The working man truck nuts are about to find out that gasoline is a problem for their $70,000 trucks.

Curtnorth 2026-03-02 14:18

Came from a RAM truck 2 years ago, well just under 2 years, to a Model Y AWD. I do miss having a truck bed to throw stuff in I'm not going to lie, but the only thing I threw in there that I can't throw in the back of my Tesla is my kayak. I did get the tow package with my Tesla so I can tow my boat around in my utility trailer, but I'm not going to lie and say it's just as convenient as tossing it in the back of a truck bed, because it's not. But outside of that one very specific example, there are zero regrets. One surprising positive was how good my Tesla is in the snow compared to the Ram 4x4, I think my Model Y is the best machine I've ever driven in winter conditions in Michigan. And I definitely don't miss spending hundreds per month on gas, feels like I just spent hours standing at a gas pump.

HoppyDave 2026-03-02 15:26

make the switch

GrimRipperBkd 2026-03-02 15:45

Do what we did: rent one on Turo with FSD for a week or two[, then order two Model Ys the following week]

GrimRipperBkd 2026-03-02 15:51

Thats interesting. Our insurance went down when we got the Teslas. Plug in charger has been fine mostly daily commuting. A dryer outlet with a Y splitter cord also worked really well.

Low-Imagination8692 2026-03-02 15:59

The truck still wins if you need to tow or haul large items. I have a MY as my daily driver, and got an older truck for the times when I need to do truck things.

GrimRipperBkd 2026-03-02 16:01

Tell me you've never driven a Juniper without telling me lol the Model Y Juniper is the smoothest riding vehicle I've ever owned, including 8 BMW sedans and SUVs.

Kristylane 2026-03-02 16:07

I kept my midsized truck (not a Ram if that matters) because I still live on a small acreage in the country. Got the MY because of the 30-40 mile one way trips into town. I love my truck. I love being up high. I love the power - like “oh, there’s a tree down? That’s cool” as I just crawl over it. I just used the bed to stand on to be able to reach tree branches I had to cut. It’s way more convenient to use the bed of the truck for cargo especially when you’ve got stinky stuff or dirty stuff. I also love my MY. I used to do everything I could to make sure I only went into the big town once a week because fuel would cost $7-10 for a round trip. MY costs me about $1.50. Now, if I forget something or maybe I just want to go to Taco Bell, I don’t feel guilty. And the FSD works perfectly for me. The comfort level and luxury level are just amazing. (Don’t be coming after me about that. Compared to a working pickup truck, it is luxury and comfort) I fucking LOVE not stopping at gas stations. Also, and this is *INCREDIBLY* important: my 80 year old mother can easily get in and out of the MY

VinceInMT 2026-03-02 16:35

My wife went from a ‘99 Suburban she’s been driving for 24 years to a ‘24 MYLR. She never drives the Suburban anymore. And she has taken cross country road trips, camping, in the Tesla. No going back.

poetuan-hou 2026-03-02 18:35

Switch from an Avalanche to the MYLR. Everytime I go home Depot and see a big item in clearance, I cried a little inside 😂. The Y does save me a ton of money though.

[deleted] 2026-03-02 20:53

I can remark going the other way (bolt to Rivian, so small truck, but we also own a Y) Going from a small vehicle to a truck (even a small one) I ran into height issues going into parking garages on my last trip, I had to take the skis off the roof to get in suddenly. The truck feels giant and I’m thankful for the front cameras when it comes to parking and there are spots I used to slip into that I just can’t anymore…. I miss my little car for all of that…. What I love and what the Y was missing (I thought about just getting a Y as well) compared to a truck was the storage room, especially an EV truck that has storage for days… but the Y has so much room for its size so unless your like me that is trying to fit 2 sets of hockey gear, for people skis and ski gear plus cloths for a trip you probably won’t miss the bed unless you do a lot of dump runs I suppose.

StormyWardik 2026-03-03 00:43

Went from a f150 and f250 to a Y in August. I havent touched the trucks since. I probably need to charge the batteries. I made sure I ordered the Y with a hitch as well in case I need to move the dump trailer. Best decision.

gamesta2 2026-03-03 00:54

Thats interesting that your insurance went down. Where is the x to doubt button?

Justman1020 2026-03-04 17:32

The whole “you need to be able to charge at home” thing is a myth. There’s a lot of places you can charge for free with just a little research.

JackfruitCrazy51 2026-03-04 18:03

Sure, if you live next door to a free charger or park near one at work.

Justman1020 2026-03-04 18:05

There’s a free charger at my local library, at my local grocery store, local park, movie theater, casino, etc….i think you’re vastly underestimating how many free chargers there are around.

JackfruitCrazy51 2026-03-04 18:08

Who the hell wants to drive to a free (usually slow) charger every other day to charge.

Justman1020 2026-03-04 18:09

K. Multiple of those are level 2. If it doesn’t work for you that going to one of those places is an inconvenience that’s your choice. I don’t find them inconvenient at all though, and saying “you HAVE TO BE able to charge at home” is such a widely generic statement that isn’t true.

JackfruitCrazy51 2026-03-04 18:23

We have a Level 2 charger in our garage, last year we drove a little over 10k miles. Our Tesla spent 372 hours (31 hours/month) charging. I don't personally have 15 days of my life per year depending on other chargers. But it sounds like you do, which is great for you.
