Trying to install emergency straps in Tesla model y 2022. Any suggestions?

dheckler_95678 | 2026-02-28 20:26 | 11 views

The emergency straps I got said they were compatible with my model. But there is no gap in the foam tab to attach the straps. I'm hoping somebody might have a suggestion for compatible emergency straps. Otherwise I'm just getting one of those hammers to keep in the rear.

There is a wire loop under the foam, you’ll have to peel it away a bit to gain access to clip the straps to

So it's okay to tear apart the foam to get to the loop? That was my hang up - I didn't want to inadvertently make things worse. So I stopped

Just peel gently, shouldn’t destroy it if you do

The foam is on there really good, so I took my loop that I bought and zip tied it super tight to just below the loop. Tested it a few times and I’m confident it won’t come loose.

Thank you very much for your help. I got it installed. But boy they don't make it easy.

I just took a sharp metal tool and poked straight through the white foam and through the metal loop that’s inside the foam. You can squeeze the foam and feel the loop. Then I ran a zip tie through that metal loop and attached a big pull tag I got on Amazon for a few bucks. It’s bright red and says ‘PULL TO EJECT’.

This is the most dangerous shit out there. How can anyone be ok with this?

dheckler_95678 2026-02-28 22:50

Yeah I am really surprised there hasn't been a recall or something to correct this. It's absurd. How is one able to access these (without the modifications) in the event of an emergency when time is of the essence?

And think of people innocently riding in an Uber not knowing how to escape! This should have been a MASSIVE physical recall of every Tesla out there.

In an accident there is a small chance that the 12V is damaged and you need the emergency door opener. So yeah, it is a good thing to get a better access to it (i did as well). But remember that the chance of your door get hit, and it wont open anyway is much higher right?

There's always the opposite side from which to escape and EVs, supposedly, are supposed to be designed such that the battery is disconnect upon impact. And even if the 12v battery is there to operate things, the door should have an accessable handle. Even if it's in the pocket, it should be readily accessable.

What I did was peel the foam off the cord you have pictured (should be a loop underneath ). Then I used a “pull to eject” keychain from Amazon, the one the has a metal key ring and fabric banner. Slip the loop into the ring and you’re set. I was able the lay the rubber door pocket back over the whole thing and still had the eject strap sticking out to grab. Then I tested it to make sure the keychain didn’t break. If you do try this and want to test it, roll down the window first. If you don’t there is a chance you could damage the trim.

can someone show us noobs what a successful installation process looks like? Is this a warranty voiding modification?

menntu 2026-03-01 11:52

Do a search for "rope and handle" on Amazon. I bought a couple and tied it around the foam piece, then laying the lining back down with the handles exposed on top:

Comfortable-Car-7298 2026-03-01 13:05

There are new regulations that say all doors have to open from both the inside and outside with the same handle you always use, even without power and tesla said they are working on new handles because of this. I’m hoping that these will turn into a recall or I will have to figure out how to retrofit them. Fyi these separate emergency handles matter very little if it’s actually serious, I was in a smaller accident and the electric door opener stopped working, I knew where the emergency door release is and I knew the electric ones shut down, but it still took me like 40s to realize and get out. Would there been anything more to panic about, like a fire, it would likely have taken more time to get out and 40s in a burning car is already a lot. When you panic instinct takes over and you do what you always do without thinking, if the emergency system differs from your standard you are screwed if time is of the essence.

Here's what mine looked like. I'm less about form and more about function. [emergency door release ](https://imgur.com/a/wkj7bWY)

Agree. My response was to dampen the fear mongers a bit, just to keep the conversation useful
