Why Performance over LR AWD?

FloAlex | 2026-02-28 12:48 | 14 views

Why would you choose the Performer over the LR AWD version? Over here in Germany the price difference is 9k €. I would guess you can get a custom suspension and aftermarket performance seats for way less. But personally I don’t need 21“ rims and the performance bodywork.

I don't think excessive wheel gap is attractive.

Personally, it doesn’t sound like it is worth it to you. Some people like 21” rims, faster acceleration and the look of performance brakes. I am also with you that LR was a better fit for me, but for a lot of people it is worth it for the faster torque alone.

In the US the performance also has Vehicle to Load capability, the other trims do not. Cost difference is also much less since all “upgrades” are included with performance trims. I wouldn’t go for it in Europe with how big the price difference is there.

I chose the Model Y Long Range over the performance. 3.5 years in, I made the right call.  The Long Range is a better daily driver and family car due the improved ride and cheaper tire replacement — and it still has more performance than my passengers can handle. My daughter applied a “no zoomies” rule when she was little and the car was new, because full-power acceleration was disorienting.  We’re all used to it now, but I still feather the go-pedal for the comfort of my passengers. If you’re going to be using the Model Y as a family car, the Long Range version is as good as it gets.

If you going to drive it on a track?

Checked the Tesla site, and it looks like the Germany version doesn't include all paint / interior options like the US version does. I don't see a reason to get Performance there unless you really want the extra acceleration.

Some people like the look and the acceleration of the Performance. I use the LR AWD Model Y as a cheap commuter car that required no petrol station visit and those things mean nothing to me.

Well, active suspension? More power ? Way nicer seats ? Car to load ? I mean there are quite a few things I could count towards the performance upgrade. (And no, although I can afford it, I still didn't swap my MY RWD for a performance)

Doesn’t the new juniper P / LR have more differences than the original Y?

FloAlex 2026-02-28 15:14

No intention for a track day.

Successful_Swing_465 2026-02-28 15:39

Its faster and more fun with better suspendion

paz9x 2026-02-28 15:50

It does. Seats are a big one.

It is a modest extra for the gti version, unlike conventional cars where gti trims carry large costs. And I like a good deal. So I got the Performance. I'm happy, I think it looks slightly more put together. The extra power I'm not sure matters. But I found track mode is great for snow driving if you're that type of driver.

Then save the money imo

Nixxo55 2026-02-28 19:38

If this is a question you need to ask youll probably be fine with long range. For me at the time the little styling changes pluse the extra hp. Also go better headlights at the time. Not sure if they both come with the same headlights now. I own 3p and a yp. No regrets.

Nixxo55 2026-02-28 19:40

This is 100% correct. I got the P to zoom zoom by myself.

MhVRNewbie 2026-02-28 20:13

For the 2 things you mention. But if you can get it for LR AWD cheaper the go for it. I'm not aware of any aftermarket parts yet. I guess any good seat replacements would not be cheap.

“I feel the need. The need for speed.”

MrSnackR 2026-03-01 11:04

If we're being honest. The difference in looks is not that significant at first glance. Get the performance for the... performance.

thewittman 2026-03-01 12:22

For me the pros faster car. The negatives not any better brakes or suspension, and it has worse tires 21s are not as good as the 19s. For me it was not worth it.

thewittman 2026-03-01 12:26

Better suspension would be a stretch as its total shit for all teslas. It's worse on 21s with 19s it's ok but it cannot hang with cars in the same speed category (in canyons). It's also questionable for reliability with bolts coming off its always in my mind when im pushing.

itreallydob 2026-03-01 17:04

What is “vehicle to load capability”?

Jman841 2026-03-01 17:27

My car can power up to 2200 watts at 120 volts from the charge port to power anything I want/need whether it's out camping, power tools where I don't have electricity, or running emergency items in my house if I loose power (I live in Florida). Basically a 2200 watt generator.

"Performance"

I was speaking of the performance end not the comfort end. I have yet to get a 1g reading when cornering on any track with stock components.

What kind of question is that?
