FSD hasn't required hands on the wheel for over a year. What version are you using?

HW3 FSD without the camera inside is somewhat annoying besides road trips. HW4 no hands on the wheel is amazing in comparison.

Try it on a newer hw4 vehicle

Try sunglasses.. works great!

Class action lawsuit over what? Not liking something?

lol, the answer shouldn't be "get a new car"

I have 2023 Model 3 with hw3 and it’s not required to keep your hands on the wheel, same as hw4.

I don’t need hands on my steering wheel for FSD.

Why would anyone spend $8k on something they weren’t 100% sure they liked?

2026-02-27 02:00
I think pre 2022 did not have cameras inside. My 2019 raven has hw3 but no camera.

You could try to initiate one, but good luck. It is a lot better than when you bought your car

Ok. That must be the difference.

The answer should be, do a tiny bit of research, and then they would have been greeted by countless links to people saying HW3 FSD is not equal to HW4 FSD

Also the side answer is, pay $100 for a month to try it before shelling out thousands for something you've never used

Right?
Although that’s what I did. 😬

This is different, if I recall correctly pre-2022 didn’t have the cabin camera so FSD does actually require hands on wheels.

2026-02-27 02:07
Same here. I can eat and drink a take out meal without ever touching the wheel. I’ll admit this is an odd thing to mention but I can do a full tooth floss without touching the wheel. I do have to keep my eyes mostly on the road.

On my test drive I kept turning it off because I assumed it wanted my hands on the wheel.

I think you really need HW4 to get the full benefits. I believe your car has HW3

I’m on hw3 and it’s incredible.

2020 here and I have a cabin camera. No hands on wheel and hw3.

Oh, maybe it’s pre-2020 then. My first Tesla was 2019 and it didn’t have the cabin camera. I thought they got added in 2022, but it may have been 2020.

2026-02-27 02:13
They have HW3. Does that allow hands off?
Plenty_Yesterday3267
2026-02-27 02:21
I had a 2020 with HW3, much better in a Juniper with HW4. In my 2020, it was crap and hardly used it and wife refused. In the Juniper, wife uses it everyday.
Bigrosey707
2026-02-27 02:36
I didn't say get a new car. I just made a statement for him to try fsd on hw4. You can do this by going to a Tesla service center and doing a test drive

I assume this is some type of user error or you are a bot. Possible causes:
You only have AP turned on which requires hands on the wheel.
You didn’t allow cabin camera to be on.
You are covering the camera.

I have the 2021 Model Y LR and it does not require hand on wheel for my FSD, just eye looking straight ahead. Auto-steer does require hand on wheel though.

2026-02-27 03:42
Yes, I do hands off on HW3 everyday with my 2022 Model Y.

2026-02-27 03:43
What software version are you on if you’re on 12.6.3 and up you’ll definitely have hands-free and it actually works very well. There is minor issues with the software, but other than that it does majority of what hardware force can do except the parking rerouting and decision-making.

You might double check that your interior camera is working properly. You should see a green dot at the top left of your screen which means it sees your eyes.
You don't need hands on for FSD. Autopilot/Autosteer, yes... but not FSD.

FSD w/HW3 does suck. But at least I only pay $49 per month because I made the ding dong decision to buy EAP. Oh well.
Floating_Bus
2026-03-06 21:46
Incorrect, I have a 21MYLR, camera looking at me while I drive hands free!
Floating_Bus
2026-03-06 21:48
You’re likely not updating. I’ve driven my MY fsd for almost 20k miles in the last 7 mos. Doesn’t suck. 99% on fsd.
SHale1963
2026-03-06 23:29
I have the latest and greatest available for HW3. And FSD does suck at times. It STILL get lane center; it favors the left side ALL the time. Struggles with small round a bouts etc. but yes, of the freeway FSD HW3 does ok, except line centering, which seems to be too much for tesla to handle.

I 100% agree. I paid 10k for FSD and I can’t even look down for a second without it beeping aggressively at me to take the wheel, even with sunglasses on. I cannot stand how there is a camera inside the car watching my eyes.
KingWilliam11
2026-03-09 12:26
Yea I cover the camera and just don’t use FSD which also infuriates me lol.
