Ow, my freakin ears!

FrimFramSaucy | 2026-02-26 17:17 | 30 views

New 2026 Model Y owner - anyone else have this problem or just mine? Rear passengers sometimes watch netflix in the back on a drive, and the whole speaker system shifts to "rear". The volume is so low and only playing in the back, so they turn the volume up to 95% to hear clearly, and I also don't mind listening to what they're watching. Then, either we get out of the car, or the show ends and we decide to turn the music on from front control, but the volume is still set at 95%. Then BAM - it's so jarring to everyone and we scramble to find the volume. As a newer user, it takes me a few extra seconds to find the volume. Then we all take a deep breath and recover together from the sound trauma we just collectively experienced. If this is just a problem with my car, I'll take it in and have it addressed. If not, some things need to changed 1. The system should remember the last used volume setting for Front and Rear 2. When in rear, this just needs to be louder (I suspect this might just be a problem on my car) 3. Why can't the audio from a show in the rear just go through the whole car if I want? I like to listen to the movies they're watching on a long drive - at least have it as an option. Edit: Changed "kids" to "rear passengers" to prevent this technical issue from turning into a parenting lecture.

My first recommendation would be to have your kids look out the window or communicate instead of watching Netflix in the car. No reason why kids need more screen time while they’re riding in the car with plenty of things to look at. Beyond that, I do wish that you could set a default volume for each time you got in the car, or it would just reduce the volume each time. Even in the 90s, my Ford truck would reset the volume to a low volume every time you got in the car no matter what it was on the last time you got out. It’s such a simple feature. Unfortunately, it does not exist on the Model Y.

Heffhop 2026-02-26 17:38

Weird because my 2022 Model Y defaults the volume to low every time I get in.

deztructo 2026-02-26 17:41

>some things need to changed 4. You need to interact with your kids so that they don't grow up on Netflix. 5. Tell you kids to turn the volume down before they get out of the car. But honestly, you are clearly not their parent and expect Tesla to take care of them for you. We know where they get that from.

Ok, change the situation to it's only me driving and want to listen to movie audio playing in the back. Or even adults watching in the back. Anything constructive for those scenarios?

BoxxTV 2026-02-26 17:50

You can switch the audio to the whole car, ive done it a few times because the audio defaults to only the back speakers

FrimFramSaucy 2026-02-26 17:59

This is what I'm looking for - how do you do this? When i adjust volume on the screen, it just gives "Front" and "Rear" options as the audio source. Rear being the show in the back, front being the station I was listening to. I don't know how to make the "Rear" source play in the whole car.

To adjust the audio balance in a Tesla, open the Media Player, tap the audio settings icon (slider icon), and select the "Balance" tab. You can drag the center circle on the car seat diagram to focus the audio to specific areas. It will default to rear, so just drag it to the middle of the car.

You got a bunch of typical reddit jerk non answers. I know there is a way to make it play on all speakers but I can't remember off the top of my head what you have to click. I just know I've done it. I think it's on the audio request popup.

You should get Bluetooth headphones for the passengers. They can watch Netflix and you can listen to whatever you please. Makes long drives with kids bearable.

Loose-Day-9382 2026-02-26 18:24

What is your deal? LOL

FrimFramSaucy 2026-02-26 18:27

Thank you! An earlier comment clarified the process.

FrimFramSaucy 2026-02-26 18:31

Thank you, kind sir! This did it. I knew about the balance when listening to whole car music, but for some reason I assumed I wouldn't be able to override the system defaulting to just the rear balance when the rear source plays. I just tried to change it and it works perfectly! There's still some issue where the rear speakers are just not that loud compared to the front - so a rear passenger is better able to hear audio coming from just the front speakers balance vs just the rear speakers balance at the same volume level. I can live with that though. Cheers!

Oh fuck off. Never played a gameboy in the back of a car?

sevargmas 2026-02-26 20:38

It’s low when the door is open, but when you close the door the volume is restored to where you last left it, even if it is deafening loud.

Fireefury 2026-02-26 21:13

The best solution though for the kids is wireless headphones for the rear display; at least that’s what I’d do

Heffhop 2026-02-26 22:21

Not my experience

Dry_Situation_3582 2026-02-27 02:37

That's correct.

MisterBumpingston 2026-02-27 03:35

You may be setting the volume low enough it’s not “ducking” the volume. Whenever a door is open it’ll lower to a specific volume the return to the original when all doors are closed.

Heffhop 2026-02-27 05:25

I listen via Bluetooth. I listen to audiobooks and am hard of hearing. I set the volume to almost 90%. Everytime I get in the car it’s back to 30%. I literally get in the car, step on the brake, press play and immediately have to turn the volume up.

jpjacobs_ 2026-02-27 08:01

Would be good if Tesla dropped the silly limit of maximum 2 connected Bluetooth devices... so I don't have to disconnect my phone to make both kids happy. Would help with wireless game controllers as well.

leredditxddd 2026-02-27 13:25

Omg you are my hero. Thank you.

PhoteksTTV 2026-02-27 14:06

I was thinking of getting a little blue tooth speaker for my 2 year olds car seat. I really hope they update this so you can play audio from the rear screen and front music at the same time

napalmthechild 2026-02-27 15:33

I was that kid who stuck his head out the window and kept his mouth open to “taste the air” and a bee got caught in my throat. Yes I was special and myself and my family would have probably benefited from having a rear screen that day.

Stepqen2 2026-02-27 15:39

What headphones would you recommend? Can you pair two sets at the same time, even if different brand, I.e I have some friends in the car that want to watch something and they have two different pairs of headphones.

sevargmas 2026-02-27 16:19

Video it. Turn it up loud, leave the car, step away so it auto-locks, go back to the car, get in, and close the door.

aranea100 2026-02-27 17:05

Anything you can find on Amazon should be good. Although I haven't tried you should be able o pair your Samsung or Pixel buds too. However, because phone is in the vicinity I'd suggest dedicated headphones for the car. Yes you can pair more than one. Also you know you can pair game controllers for playing arcade games too. Basically, the back seat is an entertainment center :)

Stepqen2 2026-02-27 17:06

Oh that’s sick! I’ll have to check it out when I get my car! The phone in the vicinity shouldn’t be too much of an issue, I can just turn off Bluetooth etc.

aranea100 2026-02-27 17:10

I like keeping bluetooth on so I can make and receive calls in the car. Bluetooth headphones are cheap enough that we actually have one in each car. Easier than remembering to take it with us for each drive.

Hopeful_Parfait7131 2026-02-27 19:19

So you have to disconnect phone to allow the 2 headphones connect. Tesla needs to sort this more bluetooth connections. Or just make rear and front seperate sound. Shocked nobody has mad some sort of bluetooth speaker that fits somewhere with power. Under screen maybe like the fridges can get.

Tesla developers are terrible
