New FSD update speed

InformationHot4897 | 2026-02-25 04:49 | 17 views

We have been subscribing for a few months now and love it. But in the last couple days I drove with the most recent update and the speed on standard is nutty. It’s putting me 20 miles over the speed limit in a 55 zone. Chill is often too slow for highway driving. Standard previously was a normal speed, say up to 63 in a 55. I can’t figure out what to do to slow down to a comfortable speed. This just started with the update. Any ideas?

God, they just need to let us set the fucking speed. How hard is that?

I’m not a Tesla apologist, just fascinated by software… To confirm you’re saying that FSD in standard mode drives right past a speed limit sign reading “55”, clearly “sees” the speed limit sign as evidenced by it showing up in the onscreen visualization next to the road, and yet still does 75? Given the frequency of these reports I would have guessed this has to be fixable … the behavior I see is that seeing a speed limit sign calms it down although it can be reckless with speed until then. But that doesn’t sound like what you observe…

Yes, that's exactly what is happening. In fact this has been happening at least since December.

The speed profiles are absolute garbage and for a company that is pioneering a lot of tech advancements, they should know better. Build a car that can drive itself and randomly break road laws intentionally is kind of wild. The best mine has done is 77 in a 55mph zone in dense fog. My wife won't use FSD because of its unpredictable behavior and while I do use it, it creates a different stress than regular driving does. Every time I DC the FSD I record a 15 second message for those nerds at Tesla.

tryzepatide 2026-02-25 12:34

Ok yeah that is clearly wrong. Even being able to set the max speed above posted limit won’t really solve it if the car just doesn’t factor in the speed limit signs or nav data.

The0bst3r 2026-02-25 14:09

The last update that DIDN'T do this for me was 14.1.7.

I’ve seen an improvement with the last update but the speed profiles are still irregular and sometimes it doesn’t recognize a certain stretch of road where it goes from 45 to 55 mph so I put it on hurry and end up with 65 in a 45 (which is actually 55 but it doesn’t recognize the change for some reason) but actually ten over is ok for me personally but it still dings me with my State Farm app. Ugh I think they ding you at 8 over so I usually try to stick to 6-7 over - love fsd overall but this is really insane - loved it back when I picked up my Tesla model y launch March 29th in Cincinnati- had it done anything like it does now with speed I probably wouldn’t have become a fan at all! Why do we have to go forward two steps and back 3?

We bought a new MY Premium on Saturday. First time buyers. FSD on Standard was averaging 5-7 mph over speed limit for us. Although my standard driving is 5-10 mph over depending on location, personally I think standard should be just the speed limit. Or make it to allow the input of a set overage allowance.

InformationHot4897 2026-02-25 17:05

Yes. I was fine with standard until 2 days ago. Now it’s just wild and I don’t feel safe relaxing about speed I have to monitor it all the time, going faster in chill or taking it out of fsd in standard. I asked grok and it said say “slower” but that just took me down a profile.

InformationHot4897 2026-02-25 17:06

Standard was like this until the last update for me

InformationHot4897 2026-02-25 17:09

I want to reiterate that I loved FSD more than anything the last few months. We moved to the country from the middle of the city and this took a huge sting out of the long drives to civilization. Going to a yoga class in town no longer felt like a long chore. I am super bummed. Highway driving speed is going to get me pulled over.

Kooch702 2026-02-25 17:40

This is the main reason I find FSD unusable

I would be thrilled with those parameters. That is what I had before the last update. Yesterday I was up to 76 in a 55 in standard. 56 in chill. I want up to 65 in standard like I had

rlap38 2026-02-25 18:27

Even an automatic “X mph or X% over” isn’t useful since we (and not the car) know at what speed we’ll be ticketed at specific locations. We also know where law enforcement officers like to sit and watch. I need a set max speed function that I can quickly dial up and down manually.

CinquecentoX 2026-02-25 20:22

Even on chill it absolutely refuses to drive the 25 mph speed limit when it enters my neighborhood. My neighbors really don’t appreciate me driving 40 mph past their house. There’s a 25 mph speed limit sign when you enter the neighborhood. I don’t understand why this is so hard.

Putrid-Box4866 2026-02-25 21:10

People should just chill and just use chill mode. Safer for everyone.

Mine does the opposite. Exiting a freeway near home. There’s a 50kmh sign but the flow is always at 70 kmh. Tesla will suddenly slow down every time I pass that sign. So I’ve always known to keep my thumb on the speed scroll and up the speed right away. Just a thing I got used to cuz I know it’s gonna happen right at that spot

InformationHot4897 2026-02-25 22:51

yes same. I don't understand it. Yesterday I drove about 250 miles roundtrip to visit someone and it's a drive I've done probably 20 times with FSD. I had to take it out of FSD over and over. I sent a few messages. Chill - at speed limit, would put me going too slow. I'd like 8 miles or so to be Standard, which it was before. Is there something I'm missing I could set?

AJHenderson 2026-02-26 00:25

This has been a problem for me since the earliest versions of 14 and 14.2 made it significantly worse. Welcome to the suck of the unforced error.

AJHenderson 2026-02-26 00:25

No it isn't. Not when chill is going 10 under the speed of traffic.

AJHenderson 2026-02-26 00:31

I've studied this extensively. What happens is that visual and map detection of speed limit are so error prone that they put in a safeguard that FSD determines what it thinks the limit is based on the road. If this speed is off by 10 or more mph or so, it literally throws out the detected speed limit and goes what it thinks the limit should be. So if it thinks the 55mph road looks like it should be 65, standard will go 72. I know this is the case because I have a 55 mph road near me that FSD thinks should be 70 at times so even chill does 72. When the speed limit goes up from 55 to 65 it gets close enough it believes it and the car slows down when the speed limit goes up. It's really obnoxious because it's entirely something they could fix by simply letting people adjust this hidden base speed it's working from and it would work perfectly for everyone. It's quite possibly the worst unforced error in automotive history.

Putrid-Box4866 2026-02-26 03:03

Chill doesn't go 10 under limit unless it can't. It actually drive above speed most of the time, just chilling on the right lane.

AJHenderson 2026-02-26 03:17

I said speed of traffic, not speed limit.

Putrid-Box4866 2026-02-26 03:22

If you mean speed on the left lane, yeah probably becaue those are maniacs.

AJHenderson 2026-02-26 03:45

No, I mean speed of traffic. Aka the average speed of all vehicles. There are roads around me where the right lane averages 8-10 over the limit because the limit is set absurdly slow. You'd have to be suicidal to use a setting going only the limit or 2 over.

Putrid-Box4866 2026-02-26 04:41

Chill mode closely follow the car in front of it (up to 5mph above speed limit), and if the car in front of it drives below speed limit, then it chages lane, pass the car, and change it back then try to drive within limit up to 5mph above, rinse and repeat. Nothing is safer than that.

Wow but that was in Mad Max. Mine was in standard FSD setting which I omitted. Funny about Priuses (or is it Pre-eye?), often when I see someone roaring past me on the interstate, they are in a Prius.

no_baseball1919 2026-02-26 10:38

I am convinced people here just don't know how to drive in general

AJHenderson 2026-02-26 13:43

That is not at all what chill mode does and when cars in the right lane are going 10 to 12 over the limit, that isn't safe.

lokihorse2891 2026-02-27 00:32

I haven't verified the new setting is there, but I think in your profile you set a max percentage over the speed limit. Tesla recommends 40% which is crazy to me. I changed it to 10% and that's been perfect

Tasty_Action5073 2026-02-27 05:10

Me too. Sign on car screen says 55, drove 75 on standard. Changed it to chill because that was crazy.

InformationHot4897 2026-02-28 02:34

I'll go in the setting next time i head out. I did do the settings ages ago when I got the car but they may be different after so many updates.
