The goal is full autonomy. They removed speed control. If they can not give us the control back, they should give us a table so we can pre- configure the maximum speed for each limit, you can set your preference for 55mph, 64 max, 66, or 70 etc..

I found myself switching between sloth, chill, and standard modes in order to keep the car from excessive speed in high enforcement areas
Maybe Tesla designers think this makes us pay more attention to the road?

Or pay for any tickets and insurance increases. Then I'm happy letting it do whatever, same way I don't care how my uber driver is so long as I make it alive. Liability is still the greatest barrier to trust.

There are cities like mine where there are speed cameras so it’s just not optional. They need to either have a quick speed limit” button or something

I don't even use FSD on highway travel anymore. AP with the ability to stay in a lane and set my speed is so much less stressful.

I see this posted daily since the update. Has anyone contacted Tesla and complained directly?

Wouldn't FSD be able to react to emergency situations? Pretty sure AP doesn't have that ability?

I'm fairly new to FSD and am not particularly bothered by the speed controls but I am starting to notice some patterns.
There appear to be 4 basic things that are in play:
1) Your setting (sloth, chill, etc)
2) What the map says (advantage - doesn't require seeing speed limit signs; disadvantage - could be out of date)
3) The last speed limit sign it saw
4) Who it's following ("flow of traffic")
The most discernible pattern I've noticed is that it can get confused when turning onto a road with a different speed limit from the one it was previously observing.
Example: there's a residential area with a 25 speed limit that turns onto a main road with a 50 speed limit, what to do until you see the next sign?
The problem with unconditionally obeying the map is that maps are not always up to date. The problem with unconditionally obeying the signs is that they are sometimes spaced far apart and it can be a while until you see the next sign.
From what I can discern there is some kind of timer where if it hasn't seen a speed limit sign in a while it will revert to the map data. And sometimes it will be encouraged to speed by other speeding motorists, when I would not be goaded into speeding for fear of a ticket or accident.
Anyone else noticing these types of patterns? It doesn't seem totally random...

To put a fine point on it - I almost always see it quickly slow down to something close to the speed limit (at least in standard mode) when the FSD visualization sees a sign, but it may regress to its bad behavior if it's been a while since it saw one. It's particularly noticeable in areas where I live that have had recent speed limit changes.

And it mostly recognizes normal US speed limit signs - not special construction signs or painted numbers on roads or nonstandard school zone speed limit signs from what I can see.

What do you mean exactly? In either case you are responsible for supervising. AP will maintain follow distance and speed and without unnecessary lane changes so it is much easier to supervise IMHO.

I suppose it narrows the variables drivers have control over enabling more consistent responses from FSD. Instead of adjusting the speed cap as before, I use the scroll wheel to toggle between modes to a similar effect.

I've seen this as well. But in my Model X, it will hold the last seen speed limit (meaning - display what it say on the screen) for a brief period of time (like 5-10 seconds) and then revert back to what the map data shows which causes it to speed right back up. Very annoying in construction zones.
My prior Model Y didn't do this... it would hold the last observed speed limit sign until it saw a new one.

Of course supervise, but sometimes FSD has better reaction than you. (plus it sees 360)
I'll give you an example, I don't believe AP will avoid someone sideswiping you from the back, FSD will (if it can of course).

I totally agree with both you guys and for me the perfect compromise would be FSD with precision speed control by the driver.

Every time I disengage FSD I leave them a 'fun' little message.

I don't think precision speed control is needed (it's also not too natural) but a hard limit for speed signs is a must. (maybe override when the car gets the sign or speed wrong)

We would also need to edit the bad map data out there.

Is that true? I'm sure I've seen videos here of people saying how the car saved them from an accident and it was a mixture of FSD and AP ?

One thing I noticed on a recent trip is the ability to go with the flow of traffic if there is traffic nearby. Also many cars travel in packs on highways. I try to stay in between two packs but that isn’t possible. If I want to catch up to the pack ahead of me, I dial up a notch. If I want the pack behind me to catch up, I dial down a notch. When I want to set a particular speed, I use TACC. When I want to drive the speed limit, I use SLOTH. So far, so good.

The one major problem I have with this company: I don’t own the operating system. I bought FSD in 2018 and it did EXACTLY EVERYTHING I WANTED. Radar based, it held a lane at whatever speed I have it, and didn’t hit the car in front of me. Day. Night. Rain. Fog. It just obeyed, no nagging, just had to keep a finger on the wheel and it just did its thing perfectly. I want that back!!!!

I just got back from 300 miles of white knuckle mountainous driving in the dark and heavy mist. FSD handled everything I let it like a champ in spite of several warnings about obscured/dirty camera lenses. I could barely make out the wet, faded and peeling lane markings. I watched in confidence as it held perfect line after perfect line doing 60-80mph.
BlaineBMA
2026-02-26 08:04
That is encouraging! I want to be able to just set the top speed, rather than let the car go so much faster than the speed limit.
I do trust FSD in night driving and have used it a few times for long distances that otherwise would not have been possible for an older, single driver to accomplish.
