Worst trip consumption of my 32k miles with tesla (wrong tires maybe?)

SnooMacaroons1365 | 2026-02-23 14:15 | 0 views

for as long i have had model Y and have driven it for 32k miles, been to Texas and Kentucky, this has been the worst possible battery consumption i have seen. 100 miles consumed 51% battery (keeping 70mph on interstate). Tesla is the only vehicle I have and I drive it about 80 miles everyday, so i budget battery and plan around it. A couple of weeks ago, i changed the tires the first time, \*\***RangeFinders** **19**"\*\*, All season, have a dry rating of 3 star and wet rating of 4 star. i have driven about 1100 miles on these tires already and lemme tell you, they are actually the opposite of range finders. These seem to be range eaters actually. today the weather has been 27 degrees and very windy so it.may have contributed to more consumption but even then, i was NOT expecting a 15% extra eat-up because of that. i dont know if anyone else has experience with range finders or i am the one breaking virginity on these... but if you are changing your tires and you are range conscious, DO NOT but rangefinder tires. On the top, these are the expensive kind, i paid $393/ tire ate discount tirea. with doscount these came up $323/. just frustrated tbh

> RangeFinders Maybe don't buy generic, store-brand tires no one's ever heard of.. > i paid $393/ tire How? They're $235 on the website.. https://www.discounttire.com/buy-tires/range-finder-gt-e/p/171301

Cold weather = range eater 100 miles and down 30% ain't bad, tbh in 27-degree weather. 100 miles and down 10% in summer time makes more sense, though. But... you aren't driving in summer... Soooo... why are you complaining?

https://www.tesla.com/support/tires Tesla-designed tires are designed to optimize performance, safety, comfort and range.

Cheap off brand tires are literally the worst investment you can make. Impacts speed, stoping performance, handling, noise, range, etc.

332 Wh/mi is not that bad in my opinion.. My average over 2 years and 38K miles is 301 Wh/mi. It is hard to believe the tires had that much to do with it.

Toreroguysd 2026-02-23 14:57

Yep. That looks about right based on speed and temp.

It’s the anime wrap.

My average is more like 268 now that the wife drives it, was 245, but driving 70+ in cold weather, yeah, there’s more going on than OP is considering since the battery needs to be kept at temp. The unknown tire may or may suck too, who knows?

Bro, I think it's more of a cold thing. By your screen it says that it's below freezing. I definitely see impacts in my car when the temps drop. This morning on the way to the gym I had about a 10% drop on a drive that normally takes me 3 to 4% in 50 to 60° weather. (22° this morning)

SnooMacaroons1365 2026-02-23 15:33

Tell that to my 8yo daughter. Lol

SnooMacaroons1365 2026-02-23 15:42

Oh yes, they were 293 and with website matchup, came to 235. Corrected first post. Thx. The reason i got these is that I had 2/32 tread left and tires were leaking out already.. and this is what they had so i put em up. I guess i learnt the hard way. They definitely have a very good road grip however. I have done some sharp curves on these and they don't lose traction. But then again, its an EV and things revolve around range and consumption, bad tires in that concern.

In my experience new tires take a dip at first always. As they wear a little bit the friction decreases and it goes back up.

When the temperature gets below 32F our range '25 MY AWD w/19k miles at highways speeds (72 max) on Tesla OEM Continental tires is about 200 miles on a full charge. Your numbers fall into that same range.

I doubt tires affected this by more than a couple %. It was the cold and wind which are the 2 worst things for an EV. I've had at least 30 wh/m swings on the same road going different directions on windy days and that's not even when it's cold out. 20% loss of range is pretty standard at 32 degrees and then you got the wind factor on top of that.

> I had 2/32 tread left and tires were leaking out already.. and this is what they had FYI 2/32's is considered so worn down to the point of dangerousness that it is straight up illegal in many jurisdictions. Those tires were due for replacement thousands of miles ago. If you check them more frequently you'll have time to order in any tire you like.

Use the "Energy" app (icon looks like a chart) That'll show deviation from expected. More importantly, it will also show if any elevation change was involved. However, for 70+mph, windy and cold 330wh/mile isn't that bad

“cold weather cost 10.0% since you last charge” It seems to me that you are wasting your time and ours on stupid questions.

theoriginalmtbsteve 2026-02-24 15:39

New tires, due to increased tread depth, will always be worse for range and efficiency early on. Remember that your original tires likely were only around 8/32” trad depth when new, most replacement tires are 10/32” which means taller and less efficient than the likely 3-5/32” you were rolling around on before you swapped them. Add in cold temps and more highway driving and you get a perfect storm for a lousy number.

THANK YOU sir. This is the only reply in this mocking pool that actually amswered with logic and i felt worth saying thanks to.
