No emergency release in a rear of 2023 Model Y

Donkey_Apple | 2026-02-22 21:45 | 6 views

The owner’s manual says the emergency rear door release is located beneath a removable mat inside the door pocket. However on our 2023 Model Y, the door pocket is fully upholstered and there’s no removable mat. There is a raised rectangular area that looks like it might cover the release, but it doesn’t seem accessible. Has anyone dealt with this or know how to access it? I’d prefer to sort it out now rather than in an emergency.

It's there under the dirty flap. There's a little wire with some foam tape on it. I added an aftermarket nylon pull tab thing from Alibaba and told the kids about it

Mine is the MiG one - so there’s nothing under that cover? Does pulling the exposed wire do anything?

Donkey_Apple 2026-02-22 21:59

Have you tested if it works?

SpliffDragon 2026-02-22 22:09

I would be careful testing it with the door closed, might mess up your window

tinman20 2026-02-22 22:16

I did the same with mine not long after I got the car. If you want to test it, just lower your windows first as the mechanical release does not lower the glass like the electronic release does. Just a week ago I tested all 4 of my mechanical release handles as I haven’t done it since I bought it 5 years ago.

Fab, thanks. I’ll give this a try.

SpliffDragon 2026-02-22 22:25

[I did it!](https://imgur.com/a/Sp26tWd#rPW2ICl) It only took a screwdriver to pry open the flap, and a bit of fidgeting for the wire! 💀

SpliffDragon 2026-02-22 22:36

How did you attach the pull tab to the wire? Does it even have a loop at the end under the foam?

Danger-Face 2026-02-22 22:51

It's a thin aircraft cable on the car with some thick foam tape on it. I poked a hole in the tape and attached the pull tape deal. This is the style I got https://ebay.us/m/RvLYiL

I used a nice quality key ring attached to a short nylon strap. I originally had the strap attached to a 3M self adhesive Velcro strip on the door panel but the glue failed in the sub zero temps we get here.

SpliffDragon 2026-02-22 22:54

What if the foam tape might break? It took me quite some force to get it open and it didn’t feel that strong of a material. But I guess it would be good, it only needs to work once (hopefully never needed) Thanks for the tip!

tinman20 2026-02-22 22:56

I really like those. I think I’ll upgrade my straps to those

Xcitado 2026-02-23 00:34

That’s similar to what I did. Don’t understand why thy would do that to the rear when the front was so simple.

Donkey_Apple 2026-02-23 06:29

Thanks everyone

nappycappy 2026-02-23 07:23

funny thing, my kid told ME about it when we first got our car.

Danger-Face 2026-02-23 21:53

Sorry if I wasn't clear. The foam tape is just to make the thin wire easier to pull (still requires grip strength and is a crap design. They could have easily routed it to a little handle/ lever of some sort) . The accessory I used makes a metal to metal connection with the aircraft cable. Through the foam.

SpliffDragon 2026-02-23 22:03

Yup, this is exactly what I was looking into rn. May I ask how’s the cable like under the foam? I didn’t take the foam off yet and I couldn’t tell what’s hiding underneath just by looking at it. It would be really useful to know how that wire terminates, so I know what to get for it. Sorry that I’m annoying with this question. I assume it’s just a regular wire with no kind of loop or tip of any kind, and I need to fasten some kind of handle thingy to it for the nylon pull handle. Do you still have a link for the accessory you bought?

Danger-Face 2026-02-23 22:11

This shows it good https://youtube.com/shorts/VY-zPsIuAXs?si=Nn5Dqyk47wpH4r2L

SpliffDragon 2026-02-23 22:16

I’ve been looking so much for this, thanks! So there is a loop under that foam! I was hesitant to remove it because I don’t want to awaken a new rattle! 💀 Update, for whoever happens to read this in the future: The loop works well with a chord of your choice, it’s an easy to retrofit. OMG yours must have been missed! The only one...Or it's underneath
