Getting used to the EV

thats-the-boring-me | 2026-02-21 20:08 | 5 views

I have currently a Ford diesel car with manual gearbox. I was on a test drive of Tesla Y and frankly, it was a bit owerwhelming during that one hour as the concept of driving is different and there is also a big screen and also cameras monitoring each side of Tesla. My question is - was it hard for you to make a switch from ICE to Tesla?

Not hard, just need some time to get use to.

Technical_Beyond111 2026-02-21 20:23

It is definitely weird at first, but I honestly feel like I got used to it within 10 minutes. And then you never wanna go back.

kadhtobi 2026-02-21 20:42

In my opinion, there’s nothing to get used to, if you enjoy your diesel, I see no reason to switch to an ev, life is too short, pick what puts a smile on your face

awraynor 2026-02-21 20:58

The problem is once you get used to the EV, gas cars will seem foreign. I constantly get out of my wife’s car with electronics still on, it unlocked and just walk away.

Background-House9795 2026-02-21 21:16

It was an easy, fun transition. The smooth, quiet, powerful acceleration is great. Very calm interior. Great sound system. Dirt cheap to drive. Specs: 2020 Model Y Long Range. That got me the all wheel drive and upgraded stereo. I charge at home with a Tesla level 2 wall connector. 72 mile round trip commute. I let the car charge up overnight so it’s finished right before I leave for work. It costs me about $3 at 16 cents per kWh. Very solid car, no issues so far.

RahRahRasputin_ 2026-02-21 21:21

It took me less than a day to get used to driving my Tesla (coming from a Jeep Grand Cherokee). It’s actually weirder going back to an ICE car than it was going to an EV.

Kooter37 2026-02-21 21:44

I got my first EV about a month ago coming from a manual transmission Elantra. It was very strange for about an hour, but then I really liked it. Going from a gutless car to one with instant torque was an amazing feeling. I’m not sure I’ll ever go back to a gas powered vehicle. I like everything about my Tesla M3.

Curtnorth 2026-02-21 22:19

Once you REALLY adapt to the car on the way it drives, you will never want to drive another gas or diesel car again. We still have the family truckster minivan for larger halls, and when I drive it I feels like I'm literally going back in time. That's not a brag up on Tesla, just how old the average gas car will feel to you once you adapt to EV driving.

null640 2026-02-21 23:45

They feel archaic. Almost fun driving something so sub-optimum.

SnooMemesjellies9799 2026-02-22 00:05

I just made the swap from a Subaru WRX STI And at first I was like wanting a gear shifter but this thing drives me instead of me driving it and I love it.

Powers5580 2026-02-22 00:16

By the end of the test drive I had it all worked out

docjonel 2026-02-22 00:29

Yes. Same here.

ProbablyMyRealName 2026-02-22 00:36

It take a little while to get comfortable, but then it’s really hard to go back to an ICE! I just got back from a week vacation and rented a gas car. It’s like driving a horse and buggy.

DonDee74 2026-02-22 00:39

Yeah, it was straightforward enough when I first drove one until it started raining in the middle of the test drive and I didn't know how to run the wipers...lol. Good thing the rain immediately eased up so I could still see the road and pull over to figure it out. The regen braking took me a few days to get it smooth enough. But I tell you, going back to an ICE car (at least a less techie one) was a nightmare after you get accustomed to using a Tesla.

Ant0n61 2026-02-22 00:45

One pedal driving. Game changing. You’ll get used to it in time and never look back.

LoneStarGut 2026-02-22 01:06

Took a few days really. Now it is hard to go back to my ICE truck. So many extra tasks to unlock it, insert ignition key, crank the key, wait for engine to start/warm, take off the parking brake, put it in gear, etc. Plus if someone else drove it before me having to adjust the seat, mirrors etc from scratch. Then stopping an ICE car it is a pain. You got to put it into park, set the brake, turn the key, get out, lock it etc. Then fueling it. Having to drive to a station, wait in line, all the stopping steps above, then having to open the fuel door, remove the gas cap, insert my card, type in my zip code, answer if I want an additive package, asking if I want a car wash, then which octane, etc, then stand there in the cold for 10 minutes holding a handle, shaking off last drops and returning it to dispensor, answering if I want a receipt. reinstalling gas cap, closing door, and starting it again and driving home. EV I pull into warm garage. Get out of car (it automatically goes to park and sets the brake) and I grab my charge handle, press a button on it, and the door opens, insert and next morning unplug and get it. Car is then charged as fully as I want. So much easier, and did I say cheaper?

IMWTK1 2026-02-22 01:07

This is how one spots the non-EV owner. There is a reason 96% of EV owners would never switch back. So, you're either that 4% or you don't own an EV.

IMWTK1 2026-02-22 01:09

All you really need to do is read the comments of people who have recently switched to a Tesla. Most love it and often they lament why they listened to all the nay-sayers.

dsg76 2026-02-22 01:09

Give it a week- one pedal driving is awesome. Better yet, borrow a Perf 3, and let it loose.

HotHuckleberry8904 2026-02-22 01:54

Simple trick: "Always keep the foot on the pedal". It's almost like driving a golf cart.

Chicken_Zest 2026-02-22 02:11

Coming from 20 years of driving various manual transmission vehicles, this is my take: The controls are pretty intuitive, but it takes a week or two to start feeling normal. Most of us go through a "rubber bandy" feeling at first where you're letting regen slow you down, then realizing it's not slowing you down enough and having to step on the brake. It'll become natural and you'll get smooth within a few weeks. The only two situations I haven't gotten used to are: 1. The feeling of seeing brake lights infront of me, wanting to coast and hover my foot over the brake incase there is a situation that requires me to brake harder. In the Tesla, you can't do this. You have to stay committed to the throttle pedal in order to coast or you will start to apply regen. 2. Driving spiritedly is difficult because of the regen. Past about 6/10ths the car gets easily upset mid-turn by regen and it's difficult to hold the perfect neutral load on the throttle. I realize this isn't a sports car, but worth pointing out that when you try to drive a little spiritedly the regen system easily upsets the dynamics of the chassis.

PrizeMeans 2026-02-22 02:12

I bought my Model Y without test driving or researching a thing really, and I got used to it within the first 10 minutes

joenationwide 2026-02-22 02:15

Takes a couple days of driving an EV to get used to it. After that you’ll feel like an ICE vehicle is like a horse and buggy.

R0bsc0 2026-02-22 02:20

Gas cars eventually feel like a massive step backwards. Drive an EV long enough and you can’t imagine driving anything else.. would you ditch your iPhone or android for a rotary phone? Basically the same thing.

Affectionate_Town273 2026-02-22 02:21

Easy switch then you hate driving ICE vehicles going forward

Alarmmy 2026-02-22 02:30

All it took was 5 minutes for me to realize that I would never touch a gas car again.

kadhtobi 2026-02-22 04:09

Sir, I drive a model y with hw4 and 89% on fsd and, I love my car, I was simply saying that different people like different things

salvoza 2026-02-22 04:37

For me it was the steering force, the acceleration mode set to chill and then how you want to handle the breaking when your foot comes off the accelerator

IMWTK1 2026-02-22 04:45

😀👍 I switched my beloved diesel SUV for a MX with similarly large% FSD on my part, and the X puts a much bigger smile on my face than the diesel. Based on my experience, anytime anyone asks if they should switch from a diesel to an EV, especially if it's a Tesla, my recommendation is do not walk, run to your phone and order it today. 😀 So whenever someone says, nah, keep your diesel, I assume that person has never driven a Tesla 😀.

Severe_Ad7852 2026-02-22 05:37

yeah, for about 10 minutes. And I will never go back.

Severe_Ad7852 2026-02-22 05:37

I said basically the same exact thing before I looked at the comments and saw yours.

Saloncinx 2026-02-22 06:52

Literally took me 10 minutes. Now when I have to rent a ICE car for work travel I can’t stand it

Schnitzhole 2026-02-22 08:00

You can do 24-48hr free test drives, id recommend it to really learn the car. It took me over half an hour to go through all the settings pages before i felt comfortable driving off in the car. Once i set it up i never looked back. I haven’t touched my Silverado in 6months. Absolutely no desire to drive it anymore as the new model Y is just fantastic all around. I can’t see myself getting another ICE car again. I’d say maybe 2-3 hours before i was used to nearly everything. Maybe a week to get smooth at using the regen braking after stomping the gas with the ridiculous power these cars have. Nowadays every other car feels a couple decades older to the point i forget to turn them off or lock them when i get out as i got used to not having to do that.

Gilthane 2026-02-22 08:07

Is this part of the aggressive regenerative breaking? I tried it in my test drive of a MY and it made me feel really queasy.

PapaPapi33 2026-02-22 08:07

Took me a few days and now I hate driving gas cars. Electric driving is way more fun.

Holy_diver56 2026-02-22 08:54

Just a couple of days will see a huge improvement, by a month in you'll never want to go back to something without one pedal. Chill mode makes it more comfortable immediately but you'll get the feel for it quicker in normal/sport mode. It's just retraining your right foot to be a bit calmer and slower. I promise it's worth it.

guttergoblin 2026-02-22 13:00

I had to drive mine 2 hours back home in a snow storm during rush hour on a 12 lane highway. I kept forgetting how to turn the wipers on. Multiple bricks were shat. I got used to driving it pretty quick, but the screen and the app still feel more complicated than they need to be.

Ant0n61 2026-02-22 13:33

not sure you looked into it before or if anyone let you know ahead of time, have to gently take foot pressure off the pedal for braking, otherwise it is very harsh stop and go which can lead to nausea for sure. Once you get a feel for how much pressure to take off or put on for smooth braking/acceleration, nothing beats it.

quentech 2026-02-22 20:33

Like 3 days in I was already walking away from our ICE with the engine still running.

quentech 2026-02-22 20:36

Yeah, regen is strong enough that you can manage to do pretty much all of your driving without using the brakes. Not every EV is like that. Most people can get the hang of easing off the accelerator pedal with just a bit of practice. It's a safer way to drive, too. In a sudden situation, your car starts decelerating immediately when you take your foot off the accelerator - not after you move your foot over to the brake pedal and press it.

awraynor 2026-02-22 20:53

My Wife didn’t believe suboptimal was a real word, although it’s my favorite word.

awraynor 2026-02-22 20:53

It’s the small things that are my favorite things with this car.

Fine-Material-6863 2026-02-22 21:33

Glad to read that, I was afraid dementia is hitting me. My kids laugh at me every time I forget to shut down the car and walk away.

rvwildcat27 2026-02-23 02:03

Give it a few days and you’ll never want to get into the Ford again!

WearyCommittee1189 2026-02-23 04:52

Will not miss having to brake on ICE cars.

Melchizedek_Inquires 2026-02-23 07:41

I literally got used to it in 2 miles. When I got back from the test drive, I was ready to buy. I've bought 10 cars in my life, that was a first for me. Still, 2.5 years later, best car I've ever had and I kept my first for 21 years. Then, after buying, slowly learned the rest of it, adapting to and trusting the cameras, etc, over 3-4 months. When FSD improved, late 2024, I subscribed and wouldn't have anything else since.

D1TAC 2026-02-23 14:25

Took me a little bit to get used to, but it was a welcomed change. Saving tons in diesel fuel in favor of electricity.

More-Sock-67 2026-02-23 14:26

It took me about a day to get used to it. The most overwhelming part is figuring out how to configure everything but it’s actually pretty easy once you figure it out. Range anxiety is basically gone now that I have home charging. I’m sure there are people here that don’t have it but imo that’s psycho behavior. As for the driving experience, I find it very fun. It is interesting though because I find it more difficult going from EV to ICE than the other way around.

PlaneGeneral5782 2026-02-23 16:57

You have to modulate the pedal more smoothly. Once you get used to it slowing down is smoother than braking. But On/off with the accelerator will make you sick

watergoesdownhill 2026-02-23 23:51

No, I never drove it.

colokan2224 2026-02-24 05:42

No, but I also watched hours of youtube videos before I ever got into mine so I had a pretty good idea of how everything worked. If I went in cold I probably would have been overwhelmed. I was comfortable after 20-30 mins of driving it

SnooHesitations1020 2026-02-24 16:15

For my wife and I, it was not hard - just a little strange. That soon passed, and now driving a gas car kind of seems a little strange. We prefer our EV (Tesla).

Brave_Wishbone_2436 2026-02-26 05:13

No. But if it's hard for you, I'd probably recommend not switching
