XPEL-Certified Tint Shop Says 2026 Model Y Has an Upgraded Roof Panel—Is This True?

Pnhan89 | 2026-02-19 17:40 | 10 views

They told me the roof panel in 2026 MY is already pre-tinted in the factory already so no need to tint the roof.

do you look into your car at ALL before you purchase? I literally research everything lol

s4lty-f0x 2026-02-19 17:46

2022 is the same. Don’t tint the roof, I hear it’ll just end up cracking on you

acaurora 2026-02-19 17:46

It depends on their interpretation of the word 'upgraded' - compared to what? Pre-Juniper glass was also tinted. The roof glass is tinted from the factory, yes, just like all other Teslas. However, if you want it *tinted further*, you can do that, and there shouldn't be a problem.

yhsong1116 2026-02-19 17:48

it has a silver coating to keep the heat/UV out

darkandark 2026-02-19 17:50

Reddit has a problem with people liking to come on the site just to ask questions when they could’ve easily googled for this basic information It’s clear this individual did not do a single information look up

darkandark 2026-02-19 17:52

you can look at this information on Tesla’s website I’m pretty sure. If not a simple Google search would’ve yield at hundreds of results answering your exact question the 2026 model Y Juniper, includes an improved roof glass with metallic coating (dual layer silver) and a 25% tint from the factory which improves heat rejection

ElectronicAide87 2026-02-19 17:56

Manufacturers use dye tinted glass in vehicles, not tint. There’s a difference as tinting windows implies putting removable film on the windows. Dye tinted windows has the color in the glass itself and is not removable.

mrbofus 2026-02-19 17:57

That’s not true at all. What facts/science are you basing this on? If this were true, it wouldn’t be limited to the roof glass; it would be happening to windshields, rear glass, and all the side windows, and we would be hearing about this all the time. Maybe if your car has been out in the summer sun for hours and then you spray ice cold water on the glass, but physics is physics.

Independent-Eggplant 2026-02-19 17:59

I still don't find it sufficient for me and hate the sun blasting in my face mid day. We got a cheap interior roof cover from Amazon and it's been working great.

They are correct.

NOFDfirefighter 2026-02-19 18:16

I’m always saying that.

darkandark 2026-02-19 18:28

thanks for the distinction

El_Guaco_Taco 2026-02-19 18:56

This. Even if heat were totally eliminated, it can be distracting in the day with excess overhead light OR NIGHT when it acts as a mirror reflecting some lights. The constant overhead peripheral “movement” takes some attention away from the road.

Advanced-Mango-420 2026-02-19 18:59

My tint shop said they had customers who reported the cracking and strongly dissuaded me from doing it with them. If it was a myth they would've happily took my $600

patdog11 2026-02-19 19:39

They are correct that it is tinted but depending on how you tint your car you may want to add another tint to it. For example if you are doing a complete 15% tint over your car, and the roof is factory 25%, you will see a difference between back/side/front and the roof. Tint shops should know what % to use, I believe you multiply to get the correct %. I also recommend asking to get a full sheet for the back window so you don’t see a line across your window where the tint shades change, you won’t notice from outside but it’s very visible inside the car.

vinfinite 2026-02-19 19:48

I’ve had my Tesla for 3 years in 130f summers and have never ran into any cracking. I love it cause I don’t even need a roof cover and it doesn’t blind my family. Along with keeping the car noticeably cooler in the summer months.

ralf1 2026-02-19 19:56

And it's getting worse. More and more people come on board and treat Reddit as some sort of personalized search concierge. We should normalize not answering the same questions over and over again.

rworne 2026-02-19 21:27

And that coating must be interfering with the FM radio. My Model 3 (2023) doesn't have any issues with FM.

Dave_Marsh 2026-02-19 21:44

The Juniper roof glass has a new metallic coating to better reflect sun and UV. This metallic coating also hinders RF transmissions. If you look at the rear portion of the roof panel you’ll see a clearer area left there to permit RF throughput. I added a 70% XPEL tint to provide a bit more sun reflection. I like being able to see out through the roof, with the extra XPEL film providing additional reduction of heat/UV/IR coming in.

SecretGate4346 2026-02-19 21:56

What percentage tint do you have on the roof?

mrbofus 2026-02-19 21:59

There are also tint shops that don’t want to deal with the additional difficulty of tinting such a large piece of glass that is awkward to work on, and will make excuses. When I was looking to tint mine, I had shops that would quote me an outrageous amount ($1,200, etc…) just so I would say no and go somewhere else. I’m not a physicist, but I am unaware of how tinting the roof glass is more risky/dangerous in terms of the glass cracking compared to any of the other glass in the car, particularly the windshield or the liftgate glass.

vinfinite 2026-02-19 23:04

20%. It’s very dark since it’s partly tinted from the factory to begin with. But I used to use a roof shade before I got it tinted, now even on the brightest days I don’t need a roof shade at all. And you still get plenty of light regularly.

“XXXX Reddit” is a popular google search. I do it all time as the first 3 to 4 pages of google results are bullshit review sites and other garbage, or outdated AI information.

Pnhan89 2026-02-20 00:33

Or, hear me out: maybe I just like to hear the confirmations from reddit “experts”, and by presenting this information like a question, I can get more engagement, get people talking 😃 Coming from a 2018 Model 3 to a 2022 Model Y and now 2026 Juniper, you really think I didn’t look into it before asking? 🤭

Pnhan89 2026-02-20 00:34

Where do you live? 😅

Pnhan89 2026-02-20 00:36

Never had this problem before, but also maybe because I use FSD most of the time, I just have to keep my eyes on the road, but not like hyper focus ya know.

Independent-Eggplant 2026-02-20 00:44

The devils butthole, aka Phoenix, AZ. Part of it is my height, too. I’m 6’ tall so my seat is further back, whereas my 5’4” wife has her seat more forward and the sliver of solid roof between the windshield and roof glass gives her face shade.

darkandark 2026-02-20 01:36

yes, searching reddit THRU google is good. At least you made the effort to even 'SEARCH' FIRST, instead of asking questions first without doing any research. BIG difference.

https://www.tesla.com/learn/introducing-new-model-y > Upgraded roof and windshield for improved climate comfort: New roof glass coatings now reflect 7-times more solar energy, resulting in quieter fan operation, faster cooling times, lower energy consumption and improved occupant comfort. I found it myself via googling. you can too.
