Do people actually buy aftermarket steering wheels?

Far_Machine_4458 | 2026-02-18 14:44 | 15 views

I'm new to the Model Y and in looking around on Amazon and elsewhere I've seen aftermarket replacement steering wheels that look like their only purpose is cosmetic. I've owned a lot of cars and never seen and aftermarket for different shapes of steering wheels. Curious to know if it's really a popular thing amongst the Tesla crowd.

I would if it included an updates signal stalk with controls to supplement the stupid “wipe now” button + scroll wheel interface for the windshield wipers. My 2010 GMC Sierra lacks automatic wipers, but I spend less time supervising the wipers in the vehicle than I do in my Model Y with “automatic” windshield wipers that sometimes smear the windshield when I engage the cruise control.  Automation in great, but it should but less work than the manual system! I can’t think of any other reason to choose an aftermarket steering wheel upgrade other than the stupid wiper/signal controls (especially on the newer stalkless Teslas).  Having used yokes in aircraft, switching to a yoke in a vehicle where you put multiple turns on the steering input is stupid.  The round steering wheel itself in my 2022 MYLR is perfectly fine, and I don’t want to downgrade.

Yes

It pains me to see people buy garbage steering wheels from clout brands who just redirect their Alibaba order to the customer. I’ve seen wheels from no-name brands that deform/snap under the slightest pressure. Unless it’s OEM it’s not worth it. Racing steering wheels from reputable brands (e.g., Personal, OMP, Momo) for track use is a different story.

I wouldn’t say it’s super popular but there are some people who do swap them out for nicer ones that are different material as there a good number of people who have stock steering wheel start peeling overtime

I thought about a yoke from Alibaba and then realized i don't want to put my life in the hands of a knockoff untested airbag.

Most aftermarket steering wheels I’ve seen it requires you swapping out the controls and airbag with the original steering wheel. I’ve got a matte cf and alcantara from vjoy car. It’s great.

Good to know!! I assumed it would come with its own

I own a Hanshow white yoke wheel for my 2020 Y. They have a version with the heated wheel, too. It is the bomb. Feels beefy and solid, no visible issues after a couple of years of using it now. It's 500 bucks, but I got it on sale for like 350. Paid my local mechanic a Benjamin to install it as you need to torque it. It uses the stock airbag as well. Somehow, it makes my car feel faster. I highly recommend it!

I did. Got a yoke. I love it. Feels like a space ship and when you use FSD as much as I do it opens up a lot of space.

Yes? Is this a troll post?

Far_Machine_4458 2026-02-19 15:42

No, I’m serious. I’ve owned over 20 cars in my life and never seen an aftermarket for non-stock steering wheels. Of all the things to replace in a car, I can’t think of something I’d rather screw around with less.

RioRozayy 2026-02-19 22:37

So you’ve never seen the inside of a model S or X? It has a yolk which was optional at first. It’s an aftermarket part. You can buy it for the Y as well, all the models now.

RioRozayy 2026-02-19 22:39

20 gas powered cars I’m sure. EV base, look it up. Aftermarket parts for EVs.

Far_Machine_4458 2026-02-19 22:59

No, I haven’t seen them but if it’s an option it’s not aftermarket. Aftermarket means after sale, not from the manufacturer. After you buy it from the market. Don’t know why you think it’s worth being a jackass about it, but you’re confirming everything I’ve always believed about Tesla snobs.

RioRozayy 2026-02-19 23:01

It is an aftermarket part, they make them in China. Alibaba. Temu. EV base. People don’t just buy them from Tesla. They made these before Tesla had EVs. Many third party manufacturers have made aftermarket steering wheels. Tesla isn’t the only manufacturer that makes them. It’s nobodies job to educate you & sorry you feel butthurt about a comment, but maybe you should do research. Seems like you can’t take constructive criticism. I find it very hard to believe you know nothing about Chinese manufacturing or Alibaba.

Yes. Lots of great options out there. I’ve upgraded every Tesla I’ve owned and have never regretted.
