Tesla's Apple CarPlay integration delayed by iPhone software - CarExpert

Spare98 | 2026-02-18 07:01 | 163 views

**From the article:** > Tesla has asked Apple to fix a software bug which has halted progress of the deployment of Apple CarPlay in its vehicles – but not enough iPhone users are running the newest iOS which remedies the problem. > > According to Bloomberg, Tesla discovered the maps it uses for its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) software – with FSD (Supervised) switched on in Australia and New Zealand last year – weren’t compatible with Apple Maps. > > The issue means both companies’ mapping systems could be running at the same time, potentially resulting in the driver following a different set of directions to the vehicle while using Autopilot or FSD. > > Apple responded to Tesla’s request by resolving the issue in the latest version of its smartphone software, iOS 26, but according to Bloomberg the slow uptake of the new software has prevented Tesla’s full roll-out of CarPlay. > > Originally expected in late 2025, the report suggests Tesla pulled back due to concerns about the low number of customers using the compatible software. Worth noting that of course Tesla hasn’t publicly confirmed that CarPlay is coming, but given that [Bloomberg](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2026-02-15/tesla-carplay-delays-related-to-ios-26-and-fsd-apple-s-new-siri-delays-ios-27) reported this, and it backs up the original rumours from late last year, I’m certainly taking it as a positive sign!

Please I hope Intel MCU gets this update even if it’s watered down.

[deleted] 2026-02-18 07:09

Tesla needs to give the option to disable their map at startup.

Soy7ent 2026-02-18 07:26

Carplay doesn't need a lot of processing power, it's all on your phone. Hence the delay...

GroveStreetHomie 2026-02-18 07:29

So does Grok with computing in the cloud, yet Intel MCU still lacks it. Hope they aren’t enticing us to upgrade to newer vehicles.

oasacorp 2026-02-18 07:38

What about android auto

TaMasterX 2026-02-18 10:18

Seriously all this talk about carplay but nothing about android auto? Like wth man

ineedlesssleep 2026-02-18 11:19

This excuse does not make any sense. Just release it only for the people who are on the latest version, and show a message telling people to update on older versions.

danTHAman152000 2026-02-18 11:30

Man I hope this will come out. I’ve gotten used to Tesla’s software but I run a shortcut on my iPhone to auto run Waze and Overcast when it connects to my car’s WiFi. It’s not perfect but gets me by. I never did buy the Tesla garage door opener accessory but my smart home does a good job at opening the door when I drive up. But leaving and closing requires me to have my iPhone open and showing my custom driving focus.

PizzaPoweredLife 2026-02-18 11:31

Why would anyone use carplay on a Tesla? I used carplay on my old car or on rental cars, because the software was bad. Tesla‘s software is almost perfect, there is no need for Apple carplay.

Giant81 2026-02-18 11:38

My only saving grace being on Intel is no Grok.

outdoorgearguy 2026-02-18 11:40

The biggest thing I miss from car play is voice to text for messaging. While the Tesla is decent, the simplicity of CarPlay for text messaging is easier. Also, having my full archive of conversations available and not just those from the drive is a huge advantage.

Joey6543210 2026-02-18 11:49

It’s about options. Some people may just prefer CarPlay over Tesla software I don’t

Ok_Jacket_2391 2026-02-18 11:53

Of course some lame excuse. What else is new these days with companies.

AdamG6200 2026-02-18 12:06

Waze

Mookafff 2026-02-18 12:06

I wonder if CarPlay itself doesn’t have a strict requirement for a certain semantic version of iOS. If so, Tesla wouldn’t be able to limit folks

freakdahouse 2026-02-18 12:16

Some apps will be useful, like my Shelly app that opens my gate, or WhatsApp.

No_Lie_8954 2026-02-18 12:16

It is delayed by tesla because "only" 74% of iPhone users are on ios 26. Tesla could make this happen but has not done so. The reason we do not get apple carplay is because of tesla.

Dragunspecter 2026-02-18 12:34

Oh noooo, not more free features

wizard_lizard_skynr 2026-02-18 12:36

Why don’t you like Grok? I’ve found it super useful for getting directions hands free. Hoping it fully replaces the voice control system sooner than later.

reddit_sage69 2026-02-18 12:38

Idk why they down voted you lol that's a valid concern for some folks.

Joe_Immortan 2026-02-18 13:03

Adoption rate is 66% and yeah, iOS 26 sucks

No_Lie_8954 2026-02-18 13:04

Yes, iOS 26 sucks, but teska could still make apple carplay happen If they wanted to.

redditor_1886777 2026-02-18 13:09

For folks asking why anyone needs CarPlay: 1) I could potentially skip paying for premium connectivity 2) Waze 3) seamless audio transfer and ability to interact with iPhone with voice control 4) Honestly more options are always better

aliefchris 2026-02-18 13:39

I prefer Google Maps to Teslas. LTE isn’t as fast as 5G. I can use the SiriusXM app using the subscription on another car. Just my opinion, but I think more options are better than less.

krische 2026-02-18 13:41

Choosing what the Intel MCU supports is probably more often a business decision than a technical one. Why add a feature to the old model when you can make a differentiator for the new one and entice people to upgrade?

krische 2026-02-18 13:41

And for the people that don't want CarPlay: 1. Don't use it

krische 2026-02-18 13:42

And the Tesla can't send/reply to group chats.

D1TAC 2026-02-18 13:49

I really hope that the 'stremaing' bitrate for music is improved. But yes, Waze would be a game changer.

lampdoorbox 2026-02-18 13:50

More app availability. My audiobook app has a CarPlay version and it would never be on Tesla.

dreamerOfGains 2026-02-18 13:52

Maybe you don’t need it and that’s great, you don’t need to use it.

lurkingtonbear 2026-02-18 13:52

I want a choice to have it in my car or not. Plain and simple.

lurkingtonbear 2026-02-18 13:53

And for the people that want CarPlay: 1. Enjoy it on your next car cuz you’re never getting it on this one. lol

Metsican 2026-02-18 13:53

You don't have to use it.

wizard_lizard_skynr 2026-02-18 14:00

Then don’t open it? Trying to understand lol - Caraoke is there, but I never open it so who cares whether it’s there or not?

mccalli 2026-02-18 14:34

This adoption rate thing is a myth - [iOS 26 is at the same adoption rate as previous iterations](https://9to5mac.com/2026/02/13/apple-announces-ios-26-usage-numbers-heres-how-they-compare/), +/- 2%.

slayernfc 2026-02-18 14:49

we dont want car play, keep it delayed forever.. why put shitty software on top of great software?? idiots.

iguessma 2026-02-18 15:04

you do have a choice... you just.... dont use it lol the regular voice control is still there

iguessma 2026-02-18 15:05

WAZE.. FFS WAZE tesla navigation is so fucking trash. and having dedicated apps for things is 10000% better then tesla's infotainment. having to use teslas system was the biggest downgrade getting this car

iguessma 2026-02-18 15:06

majority of tesla drivers have the apple mentality. fiercely loyal to corporate and will pay above average prices. i don't think we'll get android auto for years.

iguessma 2026-02-18 15:08

> Tesla‘s software is almost perfect, there is no need for Apple carplay. did these words actually come out of your mouth? lol teslas system is straight garbage the biggest down grade of the car.

Chip_Baskets 2026-02-18 15:24

Weird. Tesla could just release it saying “CarPlay in Tesla requires the latest version of iOS 26 running on your device.”

lurkingtonbear 2026-02-18 15:25

No, that’s the choice to not utilize the thing in my car. That doesn’t mean it’s not running in the background, which I don’t want. There’s a difference. “Oh the virus is just running in the background, just don’t use it” sounds pretty silly. I don’t really want the pedo child porn producing LLM to be part of my car *at all*. I should be able to uninstall the model and not have it. Period. For a post about people complaining about CarPlay because they want choice, this should be a really easy idea for people to conceive.

Saloncinx 2026-02-18 15:27

Group text messages, less buggy Apple Music, PlexAmp, Waze. I use Hey Siri for everything, i'm not using Grok, Siri gets the job done and knows where my frequent destinations are. I can say "hey Siri directions to the movies" and it knows where i'm talking about

javirebull 2026-02-18 15:33

Poor of you having to live with grok in the background must be a terrible experience

Kappokaako02 2026-02-18 15:34

Tesla texting is not decent at all. lol

iguessma 2026-02-18 15:43

Just because you call it a virus doesn't mean it is a virus Your incompetence is wild

stylz168 2026-02-18 15:48

Apple seems to prefer iOS for app updates when compared to Android. There's a native WatchOS app, for example. There are also powerwall widgets for iOS but not Android.

pw154 2026-02-18 15:49

> teslas system is straight garbage the biggest down grade of the car. a bit hyperbolic mate lol

Useful_Round4229 2026-02-18 15:51

My FSD still sometimes follows different directions than it shows on the console ui

iguessma 2026-02-18 15:53

No, it's not. Android auto >>>>>> Tesla infotainment

outdoorgearguy 2026-02-18 16:16

Better than Rivian…

Kappokaako02 2026-02-18 16:16

Not even sure why that's a topic i don't and have never driven a rivian lol

outdoorgearguy 2026-02-18 16:24

You presented an argument, as a rebuttal to my comment that the Tesla is decent. While based on your lack of experience around the competition, your view is valid, however when examining the alternatives in the market, any texting is better than none and therefore a decent option, per my original point.

Kappokaako02 2026-02-18 16:31

I’m glad you’re the voice for everyone. I don’t miss it but it’s good to have options

MexicanSniperXI 2026-02-18 17:14

I don’t get the obsession with CarPlay. It’s not all that special.

atjones6 2026-02-18 17:30

Just Siri alone. Like Siri isn’t great but the way that Siri works over Bluetooth connection sucks in comparison to CarPlay.

MichaelMeier112 2026-02-18 17:32

You’re hitting on me?

reddit_sage69 2026-02-18 17:53

Yup, I've noticed. Unfortunate, but the majority of users are probably on iOS.

Jayman_007 2026-02-18 18:45

Android users have always been a 2nd thought. Would be great to have a native watch app. I don't really care much about Android Auto.

MightBeJerryWest 2026-02-18 18:59

Okay I mean following your line of thought, what about the Android user who doesn’t want CarPlay at all? They don’t want the CarPlay support to run in the background, just like how you don’t want Grok? If Tesla rolls this out, all the cars will have CarPlay support one way or another. But the Android user doesn’t want it at all like you don’t want Grok.

BluePrisma 2026-02-18 19:04

Even if they choose to do that, it doesn't make the story untrue. The issue still would delay the release while they investigate and decide a course of action.

_casshern_ 2026-02-18 19:11

Waze is great for alerts. Many audio apps are not supported by Tesla.

quetiapinenapper 2026-02-18 19:35

As someone who primarily uses FSD unless it can follow Apple map directions this is essentially useless for me. Everything else is available in standard software.

quetiapinenapper 2026-02-18 19:38

Don’t think it’s that easy. For the longest time 26 had a map bug that made communication with the Tesla app for sending addresses impossible. I bet that’s not the only issue they’ve found. I also have doubts it’s a thing at all. We’ve never heard a peep about this officially.

Chip_Baskets 2026-02-18 20:01

I agree that Tesla software is great, but there are so many great things that CarPlay can do in addition to what Tesla software can do. It’s about allowing all of your third-party apps on your phone to have functionality on your screen which your Tesla cannot do. Here’s a dumb example that I love. When you do a mobile order at Chick-fil-A, a little window pops up on your CarPlay screen showing your order status and when it is complete. Starbucks app does the same thing.

lurkingtonbear 2026-02-18 20:02

Just because I called it a virus to get my point across, doesn’t mean I think it is literally defined as a virus. The point is that it is a malicious entity I do not want on my car. Since you’re so supportive of what features other people want, I hope you get that support in return. I hope they never give you CarPlay 😂

lurkingtonbear 2026-02-18 20:02

Poor you having to use Bluetooth for Waze. Oh no. What will you ever do?

Nicnl 2026-02-18 20:02

WhatsApp/Signal/Telegram/Discord notifications on iOS

lurkingtonbear 2026-02-18 20:03

CarPlay and android auto don’t produce child porn, so you’ve already deviated too far from the original point. I have no problems with both CarPlay and android auto being added to the car even though I will use neither. Grok is a completely different type of software and we should have a choice. End of discussion.

late2thepauly 2026-02-18 20:14

All these reasons and my number 1: I play music through mp3s stored on my phone via Apple’s Music app, but I can’t scroll through my own playlists on Tesla’s screen and to change songs beyond Next or Previous, I have to handle my phone while driving.

Outrageous-Dig5194 2026-02-18 21:27

Pandora…seems like I’m the only one lol. Wish Tesla had it integrated like Spotify.

Proper_Outcome2068 2026-02-18 21:49

Waze.

L_take_bozo 2026-02-18 22:04

Tesla navigation is pretty bad so it’ll be nice to have a choice

Left-Recognition2106 2026-02-18 22:18

As if Tesla's navigation is so great that it can't be redesigned to work with Apple Maps.

Left-Recognition2106 2026-02-18 22:20

This appeared in version 14 and is incredibly annoying.

DancesWithHoofs 2026-02-18 22:37

My pre-Tesla vehicles had CarPlay and it sucked (maybe it was VW specific). I don’t miss it one bit.

MexicanSniperXI 2026-02-18 22:41

Doesn’t it follow the same route as Google Maps?

MexicanSniperXI 2026-02-18 22:42

Eh, I guess to each their own

jhogal 2026-02-18 22:54

Why would Tesla do this, I don’t see anything positive for Tesla but loss of revenue and cracks in Tesla eco system.

Wolfexstarship 2026-02-18 23:06

Tesla navigation sure does suck. Last month I was driving down the highway using the FSD free trial when the car decided to take an exit then do a U-turn and get back on the highway. There was no traffic that would warrant such a maneuver. Made the drive 5 min longer. Then the next exit it tried to do the same. I disengaged and drive my own ass self to the destination.

[deleted] 2026-02-18 23:13

DancesWithHoofs 2026-02-18 23:18

The map would glitch out BADLY and of course at the least opportune times.

Astroteuthis 2026-02-19 01:17

It’s because the planner that decides where to actually go is now more independent of the navigation layer you see. This is important for a lot of edge cases and handling errors in maps, but it did also introduce some new bugs. It seems to be generally improving though

_twentytwo_22 2026-02-19 01:33

You know, you can override the car.

Wolfexstarship 2026-02-19 02:05

The second time I did override it maybe you didn’t read that part. The first time it was too late and it was a real world experience how bad FSD was.

Proper_Outcome2068 2026-02-19 02:16

No one else does crowd sourced marking of speed traps. Add it to Tesla maps and I don’t need anything else

MComan23 2026-02-19 02:33

This makes sense

icy1007 2026-02-19 05:37

“CarExpert” lol. Tesla will never add CarPlay to their vehicles.

icy1007 2026-02-19 05:38

That’s not how the rumor with Tesla is working. Supposedly, Tesla wants Apple to integrate Apple Maps with their own navigation for FSD and Supercharger navigation/preconditioning.

icy1007 2026-02-19 05:39

It’s not running in the background. It’s not ever running in the background.

Balancedone_1 2026-02-19 20:32

Same lol, carplay feels a bit rudimentary compared to the Tesla UI. But I am from the camp of “giving my phone a break” while driving. If you want to be constantly connected to your phone then maybe CarPlay is for you. Imo CarPlay was the top dawg 10 years ago when cars had 0 map updates, horrible UI and tiny display’s.

Slight_Wasabi4308 2026-02-24 00:31

I think they just want to add it to the Spring update because that’s a lame excuse

Dry_Quiet_3541 2026-02-24 08:00

This is Tesla surrendering their ecosystem to Apple. This move is going to be a mistake.
