OBD-II ports on Teslas

Ok_Sentence_2677 | 2026-02-18 06:01 | 36 views

I think Teslas made in China have OBD-II ports on the driver’s side under the dashboard. Here’s a photo I took of a Tesla Model Y. I’m not sure if this port provides the same complete data as the connection on the passenger side inside the trim.

It's an OBD-II port. I mean, it's there for the reason it's there. 🤷‍♂️

It’s an OBD-II port; OBD ports weren’t standardized and differed by manufacturer and in function too. The OBD-II standard came out in the mid (late?) 1990s and was a standardized port and had a much wider array of functions.

My 2021 Model Y was made in Fremont and has an OBD-II port under the driver’s side dashboard (I think that’s the standard location for the US?), and no OBD-II ports anywhere else in the vehicle, as far as I know.

Right. I meant OBD-II, I was just pointing out that either way that port is there for the sole reason it was made. Tesla's can still use them.

Have tried checking if scan my tesla works on this port? I read somewhere they only used it as a GPS tracker but I can’t seem to find it. My tesla is still yet to be delivered so I cannot confirm now.

I have one on 2023 China made Model Y, and it is not fully functional, you need to use one hidden behind a cover at the bottom of central console, looking from rear seats. It requires a splitting adapter.

My Berlin Juniper has one also. I use an OBD-USB adapter to get power for my phone mount behind the steering wheel

Everything produced in China and Berlin has to have the OBD port. Mostly due to regulations in Europe and Japan. From the new (2024) 3 and (2025) Y, this is also the main diag port for the car. Service use an obd to Ethernet adapter

Same here

Apparently to get Scan My Tesla data you have to connect in a port that is located behind the centre console and need the proper cord to keep it continuous for the vehicle to operate. There are plenty of videos online about it. Any OBD port under the dash doesn't work from my understanding, but I haven't tried it.

The OBD port in tesla’s can only be used to get 12v/5v - there is no data in there.

Berlin Juniper owner here... I'm using that port to power my dashcam.

Dunno if this varies depending on the market area, but at least in Europe every 3 and Y has the Ethernet spec port in the drivers footwell until MY2022 after which they have both the Ethernet and OBD2. I know they sell the data adapters that are fitted in the loom either on the passenger side door pillar or behind the centrr console in the back foot area, but as far as I know those are only to attach aftermarket add-ons or OBD port for add-ons. The OBD port is pretty much useless on a Tesla though, since it doesn't really give out anything that you couldn't access from the service mode. Battery SoH testers are the only useful thing I can think of that the OBD is useful. Works as a "read-only" port From a repair POV the Ethernet port is the only useful one since that allows two-way- and in-depth data and service plus -mode

I mount Qi2.2 25w there. Super super helpful. Looking clean and no distractions when driving [ringke qi 2.2 is looking clean](https://imgur.com/a/H2uQXVc)

It also depends on the version of your Model Y. I know that the S3XY commander requires the OBD port on the right side of the glove box (behind the trim) to have all features in recent models. (also non-juniper)

xFeverr 2026-02-19 16:02

Well… thanks for costing me money by showing that. I now have to buy it.

Why a dashcam if there's one built into the car!? Just genuinely curious 🤔.

rvs007 2026-02-20 04:55

I'm finding the angle of coverage for the front view is quite narrow, and may miss anything that is off-centred. Also, the Teslacam doesn't record sound, and only keeps the last hour of footage. Even though I'm using TeslaUSB to archive the footage, I find that it still misses some.

UPDATE: Tesla Model Y has arrived and I tried to plug in my OBD-II scanner. Only the VIN was read. Other metrics are not found.
