Curious to see how it actually works. I worry it'll open when I don't want it to.

sxegti 2026-02-18 03:16

I think this is already out. I have it on my Model 3

Lordzato 2026-02-18 03:18

Is that the old model y?

critter2482 2026-02-18 03:18

I’ve got the hands free frunk on my Cybertruck; works great! Starts beeping if I stand in front of it and will beep 3 times then open. I like this so as not to trigger false alarms.

nickjhowe 2026-02-18 03:27

💯 correct. I turned it off it is shit. Won’t open when you want it to, always opens when you don’t. 2026 Juniper.

notabear87 2026-02-18 03:31

Isn’t this already live? You have to stand *really* close for it to work.

Joe_Immortan 2026-02-18 03:34

Had this on my last car and honestly I kinda didn’t like it… It’s really not hard to hit the button when you want the trunk to open and it would often activate when I didn’t want it to.  Having the hatch open when you are back they’re just trying to charge is going to get super annoying.

sevargmas 2026-02-18 03:42

Huh? Why would you turn it off? It requires you to be within 7 feet of the trunk button and it gives you several warning beeps before it opens. I’ve literally never had it opened accidentally even one time. The only time I find that it almost opens is when I’m washing my car.

sevargmas 2026-02-18 03:42

Nope.

OptimizeWithAPassion 2026-02-18 03:44

It’s live for the new cars with upgraded Bluetooth, I assume this one will be location based and not the same tech so hopefully it’s better.

bigsummerblowout 2026-02-18 04:23

Imagine parking your tesla backed into a garage where you have shelves of costco supplies and garage freezer. It gets annoying when the trunk keeps trying to open.

BlaineBMA 2026-02-18 04:31

It's already on our Y and has been for a while

Voidfaller 2026-02-18 04:32

If I have a 2021 Y should I already have this?

Blindbatts 2026-02-18 05:16

Hopefully this news is an improvement to it so it works like my model x driver's door auto open. I have a toggle that disables it at home. Otherwise yeah the damn thing would open the door constantly while in the garage.

phresh5 2026-02-18 05:20

iPhones can setup a Siri shortcut to use a voice command to open the trunk/frunk/chargeport.

dablocko 2026-02-18 05:48

No. The refresh has it already. Not sure if this will roll out to all cars tho or if it’s just an upgraded version of what’s already available.

RitzyIsHere 2026-02-18 06:27

I parked at this building with a wall behind my car. I passed by the rear to run through the charging cable. It opened automatically pinning me against the wall. I have it off since then.

RitzyIsHere 2026-02-18 06:28

Yup it uses UWB. I changed my phone and my new one doesnt have UWB. So it doesnt work for me now.

nickjhowe 2026-02-18 06:32

If I stand I my garage near the door the trunk opens. Yes I know you can disable it at home, but then what’s the point? At the grocery store, it never wants to open when I want it to with my phone in my back pocket. I need to do some weird twirling dance at the back of the car work hands full of groceries to get it to open.

SUPER-NIINTENDO 2026-02-18 06:58

Stand behind your car, it makes a sound letting you know it’s going to open, it opens. In testing, it works as intended. I’ve never actually used it in the real world. I’d say it’d work great if your hands are full.

PCnature 2026-02-18 07:06

I tried it and it never stay connected long enough to open the hatch. It beeps a few times and stops. I usually have to take out the phone and keep the screen active for it to open the hatch. Might was well open the app.

nhalas 2026-02-18 09:21

Old

BG-2380 2026-02-18 10:05

You have an option to exclude it while you are home

Jman841 2026-02-18 10:30

This is not new, been out for a while. It works great as in, Ive used it 2 times on purpose and it did exactly what I wanted it to do (open the trunk when my hands are full). It's never gone off on accident for me.

matttopotamus 2026-02-18 10:41

I have highland with this feature. It always wants to open when I just pass the trunk. It’s too sensitive.

fluxxis 2026-02-18 11:02

They could easily implement the foot waving thingy using the rear camera. The current implementation is a hit or miss.

Feisty_Crab7052 2026-02-18 11:38

Ew.

guestofme 2026-02-18 11:43

This feature is rolling out now…free for 30 days, then just $6.99 per month. Get it before price increases!

WizeAdz 2026-02-18 11:44

There’s a scrape on the lip of my Model Y’s rear hatch from when I opened in in a parking deck. The long rear hatch is a rust to the car, on a way that the similarly long rear latch on the Sienna I once owed is not.  It’s because of how far forward the hinge-point on the Model Y is.  Thin feature in a bad idea for any Y that goes into a garage of any kind ever. I won’t be using an automatic trunk opener on the Model Y unless they retrofit a bunch of sensors to detect obstructions. P.S. Tesla is leaving maney on the table by not offering lots of retrofit kits and feature enhancement kits for the Model Y.

Whit3boy316 2026-02-18 12:03

I turned off the feature to open the trunk when you stand there

LayerProfessional936 2026-02-18 13:53

How does this work?

sns1294 2026-02-18 14:23

Walk up to the rear hatch with your phone, wait for a second or 2, car will start making a beeping sound and flash the amber light for a couple seconds, then the hatch will start to open. If you don't want it to open, step away from the hatch before it starts to open. It's ok for when your hands are full, but it sometimes feels like a long time when you're standing waiting for it to open. You can also specify location to disable it like at your house. I've never had an unintended open, but I've had to step away when it started the beeping sequence and I had a bike on a hitch rack.

kkengvib 2026-02-18 16:04

Doesn't work very well on my Juniper. You have to stand really close. I'm almost humping the rear of the car before I start hearing the beeps lol. And I have to back away quickly so the hood doesn't hit my face on the way up

MhVRNewbie 2026-02-18 16:15

Coming? Has it not been there a while? Requiring a phone with UWB

MhVRNewbie 2026-02-18 16:16

You don't need an automatic opener to manage to hit the roof. Trust me.

MhVRNewbie 2026-02-18 16:18

It's nice if your hands are full. Combine with a hand reading camera with AI guessing the weight.

mrjh90 2026-02-18 16:27

+1

Jayman_007 2026-02-18 16:27

Yes, my issue is that it takes too long when I'm standing there with my hands full.

LayerProfessional936 2026-02-18 17:39

Found a page on it: https://tesla-info.com/siri-and-ios-shortcuts.php

WizeAdz 2026-02-18 18:01

The Model Y needs an ultrasonic sensor on the trunk lid, even with the manual setup. Or they could shape the rear of the car and the 5th door like my old Sienna that did not have this problem.

Complex-Divide5741 2026-02-18 18:56

Why does it say “it’s coming”? Isn’t it already there?

quetiapinenapper 2026-02-18 19:31

Strange considering it isn’t automatic. It gives several beeps before it opens and takes a good 5-10 seconds or so.

freakdahouse 2026-02-18 20:42

For like a year or so.

Even-Web-7186 2026-02-18 21:26

I use this method all the time. Hasn’t failed yet

cdubbya21 2026-02-19 02:31

For what it’s worth, I hate this feature on my 3 😂. Never works when you actually need it to.

RitzyIsHere 2026-02-19 06:58

It takes a few seconds. But a fatass like me has to wobble sideways with one hand holding the charger gun.

Alarming_Fan_6455 2026-02-19 08:46

I used to have an Acura RDX that had auto open/close and it would always try and kill me when I heard the beep while grabbing groceries out of the trunk. Now I will hear the chime to someone getting into the MYP and I always do a double take like it's happening again lol. But yeah it never worked right. The highlight (and what caused me to get rid of it) was the service guy during a routine check up saying it was easy and him trying for 20 mins to get it open to no avail.

SimilarComfortable69 2026-02-19 15:36

Oh you are hilarious. It never opens when you don't want it to except when you're washing your car? Is that what you said? Lol

sevargmas 2026-02-19 15:48

Yeah. Do you have a point to make?

Hollandz97 2026-02-19 20:59

If flicks the hazard lights and if you move it’ll cancel the operation, pretty impressive and well done tbh.

dw-c137 2026-02-19 22:45

I would much rather an under bumper foot sensor like some cars have where you can wave your foot under to open and close. Phone only consistently doesn't open when my hands are full and tries to reopen while I bend down to pick things up if I had to put them down to hit close manually.

SnooBeans1223 2026-02-20 02:04

Its horrible I turned it off immediately. If you are close to a wall or garage door it will open overnight.

Emergency_Twist_2966 2026-02-20 20:17

About a decade later for this basic feature
