Confused about cruise control w/FSD

p9900 | 2026-02-18 00:07 | 12 views

If I have FSD is regular cruise control not able to be activated (if I have FSD enabled/selected in the autopilot tab?) do I need to unselect FSD and select autopilot or autosteer in order to use just cruise control? If I can use cruise control with FSD active, how do I activate it and not FSD?

You would have to turn off the FSD option in the menu. While you can turn it off during a drive, you have to be in park to turn it back on.

Why would you ever use cruise control though if you have FSD?

If you have FSD, it will be like cruise control and help you change lanes, etc. If you do not have FSD, it will also have cruise control, keeps you in one lane ONLY, does not help you change lanes, make exits, etc.

If FSD is selected on the Dynamics screen, TACC is not available regardless of whether you have FSD engaged/active or not. Deselecting FSD on that page can only be done in Park. While I’ve not tried it myself, I’ve heard that a workaround is to create a second profile that does not have FSD selected and switch to that profile when just wanting TACC

I can’t believe adults ask these questions

Sometimes I really enjoy driving (twisty roads) but not the keep-my-speed part, for one.

Because I generally like driving. I would’ve bought some boring ass four-cylinder car if I didn’t. I bought a Model Y AWD and the acceleration boost because it’s fun to drive. Even when I’m on a road trip, I find it boring as hell to let FSD do the driving. I need something to do. I like to road trip so I like to do the driving. To OPs point, it’s without a doubt the worst decision Tesla made with the MYJ, to remove the right stalk and thus not allow users to toggle between TACC and FSD. FSD would be nice intermittently on a road trip, but I mostly want to use cruise control, so cruise control is what I have in the settings. FSD literally never gets used.
