3 small children in Tesla Model Y?

thats-the-boring-me | 2026-02-17 16:59 | 13 views

Hi I have 3 small children (5, 3 and 8 month). Is it possible to fit 3 child seats in the second row? What is your experience?

Possible? Yes. Comfortable, likely not.

Appropriate-Bad728 2026-02-17 17:40

Yes it is

Yes its possible...not trying to be rude but I found it through a quick search. [https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/comments/1b5zhb1/model\_y\_3\_car\_seats\_newborn46/](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelY/comments/1b5zhb1/model_y_3_car_seats_newborn46/)

If the bigger two are in booster seats then its probably possible although tight. Would probably order a 7-seat interior and have the 5yo sit in the very back in a booster.

Would be a tight fit. Hard to know since every car seat is so different. I'd schedule a test drive and bring the car seats and see if they fit or not.

Will do so, thank you

thats-the-boring-me 2026-02-17 18:58

Not rude at all, I should have found it myself as the search is easy and quick. Thank you!

How long do you plan to have the car? It will not be comfortable. Kid's won't have space to put a snack or drink down. You won't be able to bring much with a stroller, and bags if you're on a trip.

Can you order a 7 seater ?

ghdana 2026-02-17 19:10

In the US I know you can for the last month or so at least. And the previous gen has 7 seaters on the used market.

Can it work? Yes. You’ll want to get narrow car seats (and booster seats). But most people I know who are doing that had the vehicle before the third kid. The Lyriq and Blazer EV have wider back rows (by about 1” per kid). But your best bet is the EV9 or something with a decent third row.

I have a 6, 4 and 1 year old. No issues for us. I do have a 7 seater and will occasionally put the 6 year old in the back but they usually ride 3 across. I’m a CPST, so I have a ton of car seat configuration experience.

OkConcentrate1371 2026-02-17 19:36

Its possible. We have a 5 year old, 2 year old and a 1 month old. We have two diono radian car seats and one graco.

acescore2 2026-02-17 19:36

I have a 3 and 2 year old and with both car seats in the back, there’s barely any room for a third. We have a Sienna for when we eventually expand our family.

Would be fine. When they get to be teens it will be another story but 3 small children fit easily in a Y backseat

ale23arg 2026-02-17 19:57

she did say she had 3 small children.....

CYB3RTRUNK 2026-02-17 20:12

haha fair enough.

CYB3RTRUNK 2026-02-17 20:13

any tips on car seat configurations?

BigBlackMagicWand 2026-02-17 20:19

Okay, here's an experience from another parent of 3. Yes Y fits three child seats easily in the back. I currently have two forward facing and one rearwards. Depends on the seat models but generally yoy can only fit one with isofix and the rest has to be fixed with belts. Y is the only "reasonable" sized and priced EV along with ID.4/Enyaq or EV6/Ioniq5 I have been able to fit 3 child seats in the back row. (And saying this with the fact that I managed to cram same 3 seats into a Polestar 2 backseat for a month but that was absolutely ridiculous performance on itself...)

It's possible to do 3 across. I have 2 front facing Diono 3r seats and a Clek Liing infant car seat. I haven't tried it yet but I've heard it's possible to do a Harmony backless booster, Diono, and Clek Liing in a row. It's tight but possible. The hardest part is when the kids start fighting in the back lol.

HPMJ2014 2026-02-17 21:01

What ages and seats? Or what is your budget? Are you rear facing all or some?

snowace56 2026-02-17 21:26

Yes. I have it now. Just get the right car seat

Cool_Suggestion9227 2026-02-17 21:29

I have my 1 yo in the front seat, 5 and 7 yos in the back. Sometimes we drive as a 5 people family and I (the mom) squeeze in the middle in the back. I didn’t want to invest in a narrow 3 seat back set up as already owned all the standard seats.

dellfanboy 2026-02-17 22:09

What setup do you use? Have a 7 seater and the issue is access to the 3rd row is such a pain cause I have to redo the car seats for ins and outs of the 3rd row.

Warhouse512 2026-02-17 22:32

You sound like you’d make a great parent! Best of luck friend.

DoctorStrangeMD 2026-02-17 22:38

There’s a lot of good YouTube videos. You need to be very particular about which car seats you get. The smaller kids car seats can be big. Look it up on YouTube. Diono car seats are made for this. The 5 year old soon maybe good for a booster. Also you maybe the family that the 3rd row would be ok for. You can put just 1 seat up in the back. I will say that the model y is ok for 3 small kids. Maybe tough for a long trip.

WinterSprinkles4506 2026-02-17 23:04

I vote wait for the YL

We have 2 rear facing and an infant with base in middle row with larger than average car seats I'd say (as in not slim). Infant is in middle bc safest but you can't use latch then and also I can't easily take the seat off the base so I just leave it there. My others also complain when I reach over them to buckle baby so if you're ok with it you could put infant on side and have your eldest in middle and teach them to buckle and unbuckle. It's tight and you do have less space upfront so if you're tall (I'm 5'7 husband is 5'9) you may not like it. I know when I was pregnant it was a little too close for me. But it's doable and ours is a 3 row so you may be able to love second row back more in a 5 seater. We're now looking at what to do if we have a 4th but I think the moment you can forward face one it's easier - I've also thought about doing 2 in our back row and 1 in middle so I can lower the 2 seats in middle, or 1 in back and you lose half your trunk. But that's only if you have 3rd row.

HPMJ2014 2026-02-18 00:34

I switch it up a lot. I had a ride safer vest, a bubble bum and a evenflo slim revolve. At the moment I have a graco trazition, bubble bum and the evenflo. The graco slimfit works really well back there and I had my pipa back there for a while. It just depends on what seat your kids need
