How to get Tesla Insurance quote before purchasing?

40KWarsTrek | 2026-02-16 07:13 | 20 views

The only thing that has stopped me from getting a Tesla are insurance quotes exceeding 330/month. For reference, I can get a Volvo, BMW, Mercedes or whatever you can think of for somewhere between $70 and $130 depending on the year and model, so the issue is not my driving record. My friends own a Tesla and told me they only pay $120 through Tesla insurance, so I want to see if that would fix my issues, however I can't figure out how to get a quote. I have a VIN I'd like to check, but I can't get a quote in the app without that VIN being assigned to me, which it can't be before I purchase the vehicle. Does anyone know if Tesla has any way of providing and insurance quote before purchasing one of their vehicles? Anything below $150 and I'd pull the trigger right away.

I just found this out yesterday too 😭 It all depends on what state you live in. Both because Tesla doesn’t do insurance in every state and because certain states have higher insurance rates specifically on Teslas. I’m from NY and the rates I was looking at were like $300+. I have a clean record w/ no claims but I’m under 25.

Unfortunately no, you have to have the car in your name, process goes you start a quote in the app, take pictures of the car (various exterior and interior photos), and then continue the process.

If you’re buying new, you can quote during the purchasing process. In my case it came back higher than my current insurance company.

Try Erie

“My friends told me…” Just because they pay $120, doesn’t mean you will.

I get it's different for everyone, that's why I want the quote. If I was under the misguided impression that everyone payed $120, I wouldn't be posting here and would have already purchased the vehicle. What do you think the point of this post was? The point of sharing that number was to illustrate why I am asking about Tesla insurance in particular, as it has been demonstrated to provide insurance rates

I paid 550 per month for almost a year. Location NYC, new driver. If that makes you feel better. Now paying around 350

To be completely transparent, you don’t want Tesla Insurance. Just the safety score alone was enough for me to switch.

40KWarsTrek 2026-02-16 18:36

Thanks for the suggestion, but they apparently don't operate in my State :/ Any other companies you know of?

40KWarsTrek 2026-02-16 22:57

What did you switch to? I can't find any providers even close to what other cars would cost for me.

FoxBearBear 2026-02-17 01:10

Try progressive.

40KWarsTrek 2026-02-17 06:03

May I ask what dropped your rates?

Salty-Hat-3994 2026-02-17 06:20

Costco insurance. You're welcome

40KWarsTrek 2026-02-17 06:37

I'll try that, thanks!

I think it’s the clean driving record for almost 2 years now

40KWarsTrek 2026-02-18 04:29

Well I've had a clean driving record since I was sixteen. That was 14 years ago...

justbored858 2026-02-19 02:53

Try Geico also

40KWarsTrek 2026-02-19 05:02

I have, they've given me the cheapest quote so far, but still over 300/month.

justbored858 2026-02-19 05:12

Same for me. Tried shopping around and most companies were quoting me double of Geico. Geico is quoting me 220 a month.

rwhe83 2026-02-19 05:27

There’s plenty of companies out there, getting a quote maybe takes…10 minutes each.

Enough-Height3025 2026-02-20 02:39

Did you have to pay the order fee before getting quoted?

Trytofindmenowbitch 2026-02-20 10:09

Yes it was after I ordered. Idk if there are other ways.

Same boat here. At some point one of their reps or salespeople started texting me and I asked about insurance and that I needed a quote before I could commit to buying the car. He said without a VIN it's not possible but did give me a very rough range of what he's seeing in my area. I'm going to assume it would be on the high side of their estimate so $250/mo. State Farm quoted me $350/mo and I may just stick with them. They're more expensive but I've been with them for about 25 years and they were very easy to work with when someone hit my current car and it was ruled no one was at fault. Since there was no fault, they didn't raise my rates. Everything I've read about Tesla insurance is very negative. And when I tried calling them directly to get a more accurate quote, their recording said the hold time was over an hour. Sorry, if I get into an accident and need to call my insurance company while sitting on the side of the road, waiting on hold for an hour isn't an option. What's interesting is that State Farm told me that by far, the biggest part of the premium was comp/collision. The policy is $2100 ever 6 months and something like $1600 of that was comp/collision because of the high cost of repairs and ease of being declared a total loss. I'm in SoCal if that helps.

No_Tea_2867 2026-03-02 19:56

How did that go?

40KWarsTrek 2026-03-02 22:36

Nope, very expensive. I've decided to stay away from Tesla until the rates go down unfortunately. Hope that happens in the next couple years. A Volvo costs me half as much :/

No_Tea_2867 2026-03-02 22:37

Same I been calling all day the lowest I found was 450$ and that’s with a 2500 deductible 😂I’m looking at Hyundai Elantras now

I don't think you read my post. I explicitly asked about Tesla insurance, stating that other insurance companies give me ridiculously high quotes. The "standard" insurance companies will provide those quotes, Tesla will not.
