With Performance Tesla, you should just be focusing on the *performance* and not the gas savings. Any savings should be a bonus. It’s just a solidly fast car.

The gas equivalent is based on an estimated gas cost of $3.15. Is that what gas cost in Southern California?

The Tesla gas cost estimate is $3.15 which is way off for California. The nearest Costco here in the Bay Area shows $4.09 for regular!

California average is $4.58 regular unleaded in February 2026. You could claim $3.15 if you wanted to karma farm.

Before you guys start hating, I’m not the one who developed the app. If it can’t get the gas cost right based on location then I don’t know what to tell you. Lowest Costco regular in my area is 4.15

I get that but the understanding is you’d save a ton regardless based on empg. These stats are based off a few weeks of commuting to work and 1 big road trip up north.

How do you update the zip code

Why would you assume that you’d save a ton? My assumption going in is that i’d save ~50%, but unless you do a lot of math before buying one you won’t really know. I’ve never even considered empg lol If anyone has a calculation or conversion for that i’d love to test it out.

Not sure what you mean?? Does Tesla app consider California average to display “Gas Savings”? Mine sure doesn’t - it says the calculation is based on $3.15 per gallon in the US.

$4.60/gal for premium at Costco in South Orange County.

I haven’t seen the real world range on a long range that much better compared to performance. I’m not driving it like a maniac either. It’s great savings, until you need to pass your max range on a long trip.

I’ve since updated my zip code on the app so it’s now showing $25 savings. Total charged this month was 555 kWh

I also updated my home rates and free work rates. So since I mainly charge at work for free, So far I’m getting $73 savings a month based off that. But I’m sure not everyone gets that.

Free charging at my parking spot ftw. I was 60/40 this month due to a road trip(including sub-zero weather), and even though I spent $59 on superchargers, I still saved $94 compared to gas. Saved over $1000 since buying mine last June with 4 long trips. Love this thing.

Even then.. Still saving. I was away from home 4 days in subzero weather and only used superchargers and parked outside, sentry mode on the whole time. Saved $94 this month. Juniper is a beast.

Ok I did some math. Assuming you drive 2026 Model Y AWD averaging about 280 Wh per mile, that equals 0.28 kWh per mile, or roughly 3.57 miles per kWh. If a total of 555 kWh was used, that would be 1,981 miles of driving (555 × 3.57). With your mix use of charging of $178 total then you’re paying around $0.32 per kWh. Compared to a 25 MPG car with a gas cost of $4.15, gas would have cost about $329, meaning you saved roughly $151. Compared to a 30 MPG car, gas would have cost about $273, saving you about $95. Compared to a 40 MPG car, gas would have cost about $206, saving you about $28.

So why doesn’t the app show this?

I think if you use the tezlab app you can even put the gas prices that are actually around you as well for better comparison! But definitely supercharging is expensive and not much of a gas saver if you rely on it. I see you updated some stats as well which is good but yeah that super charging will kill anything you think you’re saving. Who cares about it if you use it on road trips if you barely use it it’s not a big deal. But I tell everyone if you’re buying a EV with no home charging you won’t be saving much unless obviously you have free charging at work or something like that

Home charging has been a blessing for me. Saved over 130 bucks already, but I'm in nj. So not as bad as Cali yet.

Free charging at work means ~$50 additional savings. You should update settings to reflect free charging at work.

Wish they let us change gas pricing

Can't wait to switch to Tesla electric in April. $15 per vehicle monthly and no delivery charge. Also the plan provides the remaining energy to my home at a lower rate than other providers. Having a second Universal Wall Connector installed soon so both vehicles can charge within the 12a-12p window. Having two Teslas in our home makes a huge difference.

I just realized that Tesla Electric is a Retail Electric Provider (REP) and only operates primarily in the deregulated energy markets of Texas, for now. It functions as a licensed entity that sells electricity directly to residential customers. Electricity providers are different here in the Houston area than other places where I have property. CenterPoint Energy is our Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU) (sometimes called a TDSP). However, that means they serve as the "logistics and hardware" company. Because they are a utility, we don't get to choose them; they are assigned to my property based on my physical location. The location of a property determines which TDU services it. CenterPoint is the TDU for the Greater Houston area. Two others that support Tesla electric are Oncor and they are the utility for the Dallas-Fort Worth / North Texas area, and the last that I know of is TNMP (Texas-New Mexico Power) and they are the utility for the Lewisville (North Texas), Texas City and Friendswood (Gulf Coast), and Fort Stockton (West Texas) areas. There could be more but that's all I've found so far. Also, I'm sure Tesla is looking to expand if they can. My other properties are located in multiple states where there is no choice.

You may be right. I know that at some point I put in what I pay for gas and what my electric costs and it gave me what I could save. Maybe it was when looking into buying the car or when I did the setup for the level 2 charger in the Tesla one app.
