There needs to be an age limit for driver’s licenses

I had the same thing happen to me! But it was a long time ago. Her brand new Caddy (dealer tags) was totaled. My 88 Jeep Grand Wagoneer needed a tire and a door.

Not a limit, just a yearly enforced test after age 55. Easy peasy. The problem is that the geezers who need their licenses taken vote in higher proportion than any other voting group, so this shit will never happen.

No between 55 and 70 is when a lot of people need to lose their licenses by. The checks need to start earlier. They’ll be fine, unless they can’t drive.
Aggressive_Wasabi_54

I agree 55 is too early. 70 is better and I think bi annual would suffice

Yeah, saw the promo. 0.99% for the premium, which is what I would choose. Have to wait until Tuesday to talk to the adjuster, but I'm assuming it will be totaled.

Yes that would be the STARTING age to detect mental decline. For anyone who doesn’t have a problem, it shouldn’t matter. For anyone who does have a problem, well that’s who you wanted to catch. You don’t set the age at the point where MOST people have problems BY because that means problems have been going on for years by that point. Yes. 55.

Why would being the same age AARP requires, or the age for a 55+ community, be a bad STARTING point to begin addressing mental decline and motor skills? Go ahead, begin explaining your logic.
Edit: it's kind of amazing that you don't drop any rebuttal or provide a solution or any evidence. You just come in, drop a comment, and dip the fuck out. People like you should be banned from making comments honestly.

Unless you can back this up by fact it seems completely unreasonable to cast out drivers at this age
InformationHot4897
2026-02-16 03:35
55 is pretty much the safest driver age I’d wager - people are completely sharp at that age! I think people would be comfortable with extra scrutiny on those over 80. Considering retirement is 67.5 years - we expect people to work at least til then, and maybe even 72!
lurkingtonbear
2026-02-16 03:35
I don't think it's on me to back it up. It's on them to prove they can still drive, and as long as they can, there is no problem. Fuck it, let's keep it yearly from age 16 until death. There, your argument is now irrelevant.

2026-02-16 04:25

2026-02-16 04:52
I'd get behind this choice!! I'm also one who hopes we legislate continuous proof of gun ownership, skill, and safety. Some sort of annual test or certification from gun ranges would be fine.
Kinda the same concepts for violent and potentially lethal tech that is harder for some folks to handle than other; especially emotional people. Whatcha think; why not do both to help?

2026-02-16 04:56
For sure the exact same idea should be applied to anything that can harm people if someone's skills with that thing have deteriorated. This should be no different than being allowed to practice medicine, flying a plane, or anything else that failure leads to death. There should never be any resistance to this except from those who feel they would be told they couldn't do something, in which case, they shouldn't be doing it so I don't care what that individual's opinion is. I'm all for it.

In a situation like that, you want it to be totaled. That car will never drive the same again. If you were to get into another crash, it probably wouldn’t hold up as well. So have fun picking out a new one!

Also take consideration of taxing the system to implement such a check vs the result benefit. Starting at 70 would still take many years to go through the processing backlog,
GPT estimate:
35 million drivers age 70+
100 million drivers age 55+
**The "Age 70" Shift:** In 2026, many states are implementing stricter in-person renewal rules once you hit 70. While no state revokes a license *solely* for age, many (like California and Florida) require more frequent vision tests and in-person visits rather than online renewals once you reach this milestone.

Iceland uses a progressive system where the older you get, the more often you must prove your fitness to drive. By age 70, the validity of your license begins to shrink rapidly:
|**Age of Driver**|**License Validity Period**|
|:-|:-|
|**65 to 69**|5 Years|
|**70**|**4 Years**|
|**71**|**3 Years**|
|**72 to 79**|**2 Years**|
|**80 and older**|**1 Year**|

This is what I did immediately. The lady even lied to her insurance company and said I was speeding and went through a red light ( there was no light there). She also admitted to insurance that she got a ticket. Zero logic, and she is still driving around.
The insurance company accepted liability BEFORE I sent them the videos. I think they wanted the videos to use against the lady to dump her. Now I'm just waiting on the appraisal result.
