I tinted my first row windows for $70

LemonChiffon831 | 2026-02-15 06:44 | 201 views

After sacrificing my entire weekend DIY-ing my ppf (previous post), I felt confident enough to give window tinting a shot. Tint is 35%, check out 3rd and 4th to compare before and after. Got the precut kit from DIYWrapClub on sale, and I was done in an hour and a half. I don’t have any prior experience in window tinting, and this was a fairly easy install!

Awesome job man

LemonChiffon831 2026-02-15 06:53

Thank you!! This was SO much easier than applying ppf 😮‍💨

DaSandman78 2026-02-15 06:56

You're lucky, ~~most~~ some places the cops fine you and get you to remove if you tint the front row or windshield (safety reasons) Edit: my area seems to be in the minority

The tint’s brighter than the legal limit for first row windows here, so I should be all good! I dont plan to tint my windshield for that reason :)

DaSandman78 2026-02-15 07:04

You're right, most provinces in Canada allow up 30% tint, I'm in BC which seems to be in the minority that doesnt allow ANY tint on the front row :(

DaSandman78 2026-02-15 07:05

Yeah seems most places allow a small amount of tint, I just happen to live where none is allowed

rsg1234 2026-02-15 07:12

I agree, tinting is much easier than PPF—except for the front windshield. I have not been able to DIY that piece of glass yet.

K3jai 2026-02-15 08:11

Congrats 🍾. Looks great

jer99 2026-02-15 08:45

Does 35% match the rear with that diy club?

ifyym 2026-02-15 08:55

No, you’d need about 25-30% for a perfect match.

SaltInflicter 2026-02-15 12:10

This appeals to me to try but are bubbly window tints a results of poor DIY installations or bad tint? I'm tempted to try this but if its a long term headache because I mess up slightly I should do professional.

short_bus_genius 2026-02-15 13:22

Nice post, bud. You’re inspiring me to give it a go. I also did a DYI PPF kit. It killed my back. I even got a bunch of replacement panels that are just sitting in my garage because it’s such a pain in the ass! I don’t want to start again. Having said that… so you say window tint is easier than PPF? Do I dare give it another go? A couple of basic questions for you…. What discount code worked at that website? TB15 doesn’t seem to work for me. Did you have trouble getting the tint down into the window seal? How do you match front and rear side windows? Thanks,

EsteTre 2026-02-15 13:45

Your windows have natural tint, so if 35% is the legal limit and you used 35%, you may still fail.

Leyvaman-MX 2026-02-15 14:46

Well done 👍

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-02-15 14:49

No one cares about public safety or personal responsibility anymore. Our society has devolved into a catch-me-if-you-can, I'll do whatever I can get away with, as long as it pleases me, wasteland. There is a twilight haze that even so-called clear windshield tint casts on sunny days. It obstructs a clear view. If you get into an accident with front tint, your insurance company can decline to pay based on your "modification of safety equipment." The fact that people have zero guilt about publicly sharing how they consider breaking the law blows my mind. If someone with front screen tint hits one of your loved ones who is crossing the street, you'd want them punished. Don't think it won't happen to you. Please don't be that person.

Pencelvia 2026-02-15 15:01

Impressive!

JB-ZR1 2026-02-15 15:18

I used to do window tinting on cars back in the 80s, and was tempted to try PPFing my Y but gave in and had it done. I still wonder if I could have handled it. Yours turned out great! 👍

GI_Jade95 2026-02-15 15:37

This has me, a 30 year old mom with serious OCD and no experience, convinced I could do this. Now just to get my husband to mind his own business for a minute… 🤣

My tint guy did mine for $99 for the front driver and passenger windows

HFSGV 2026-02-15 17:36

He doesn't understand the legal concept of comparative negligence. If the tint is a contributing factor then going beyond the legal limit can come back to hurt you. Your benefit is marginal by adding tint: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eYg6N1efm4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eYg6N1efm4) while the downside risk can be significant.

HFSGV 2026-02-15 17:37

Why didn't you shield the door panels from water?

Public-Practice-4032 2026-02-15 17:43

must be a newbie but goodie

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-02-15 17:47

And he's not alone. The tint producers/installers that have consumers sign disclaimers that protect them from irresponsible product use shouldn't make this practice acceptable. Putting others at risk without concern or guilt is a societal problem. About all kinds of issues.

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-02-15 17:52

Excuses, excuses. And we're totally calm. If you read these FACTS with anything other than a calm tone, that's what's inside YOUR head. If you don't know about twilight haze/glare, even on 70% tint that you can't otherwise see, then you need to educate yourself beyond what you wanna hear.

HFSGV 2026-02-15 18:01

IMO it can be done properly as long as VLT is within State limits. But the fact, is other than aesthetics, the benefits are marginal because the auto manufacturers have addressed issues like UV and IR. Also, here is a glass professional who says its not smart to tint dual pane windows: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3UABYtNVRc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3UABYtNVRc)

LemonChiffon831 2026-02-15 18:09

I taped a trash bag over it but then the tape gave up so I was just like ‘oh well, i’ll wipe the water after’ haha

LemonChiffon831 2026-02-15 18:13

Window tint was so much easier because there werent any complex curves. Make sure u get a heatgun (I used a wireless one) so you can shrink it properly. The website’s on President’s Day sale right now! The precut kit comes in perfect lengths so you do t have to worry about tucking it too much :) I didnt really worry about matching the front tint % to the rear since I wanted to be within the legal limit, but I believe the factory 2nd row tint is around 25%. Hope it helps :)

LemonChiffon831 2026-02-15 18:15

I’m not a tint professional at all, so I’m afraid I dont have an answer for your question haha But I do hear that water bubbles find their way out in a couple of weeks. If u get airbubbles however, you did it wrong. It’s very easy to do a clean install if you’re patient about it!

LemonChiffon831 2026-02-15 18:15

Thank you!

LemonChiffon831 2026-02-15 18:17

I dont think I can find that kind of rates here in the Bay Area :( That’s an awesome deal tho, congrats!

LemonChiffon831 2026-02-15 18:17

Thank you!

LemonChiffon831 2026-02-15 18:19

The step by step guide made by DIY Wrap Club on Youtube was suuch a lifesaver! Just be very patient about it and follow every single little direction / tip the videos give you, and ur golden.

LemonChiffon831 2026-02-15 18:20

Thank you! It’s probably much better to have a professional do the ppf, since my DIY job isnt perfect at all. I’m thinking of re-doing mine (at least the front bumper) because of imperfections.

LemonChiffon831 2026-02-15 18:20

Appreciate it!

Nice try with the Ad Hominem. If you make it about me needing to calm down or being triggered it's supposed to get ppl to think of me as the problem (vs responding to the facts I presented about window tint). Rotfl. It's one of the oldest tricks in the internet troll book.

julc3boxarmy 2026-02-15 19:42

oh yeah on the bay it's a couple hundred even for cheap tint

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-02-15 21:31

Again, trying to label me "super emotional." Ad Hominem. As if safety is less a concern than my mental state. You just can't comment without the plant of a put-down in your reply. It's sad.

It's called low angle haze. *shooting star* The more you know: high-quality clear (or light-shade) ceramic window tints can have a "haze effect" known as Low Angle Haze (LAH), particularly when driving towards the sun in the morning or evening. This phenomenon is caused by the light-scattering properties of nano-ceramic particles used for high heat rejection and is often most noticeable in high-performance, clear, or 70-80% VLT films.

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-02-15 21:36

Proper responses include: Wow...thanks for the info- I had no idea- Sorry I doubted it- Maybe that's why installers have customers sign waivers-

SaltInflicter 2026-02-15 21:41

Thanks ill give it a shot! I didnt even think about DIY'ing this but im glad you posted it. Saves me $400 if it turns out well!

Pitiful-Art-423 2026-02-15 21:41

Then why do installers have customers sign waivers?

AdelesManHands 2026-02-16 00:39

Looks like it starts at $89 and you have to pay for shipping.

Lexisodope 2026-02-16 02:14

OMG IS THAT A SUPRAAAAAAA

Fiatch294986 2026-02-16 11:25

Good job 👏🏼 looks awesome with that 35% having the tint ordered cut makes it more easier for the DIY

Ev_Cruiser 2026-02-16 14:34

Nice job, well done! That's 35 %, what is the factory percentage on the back windows?

Schnitzhole 2026-02-16 14:47

Nice looks good. Why does it look like it’s attached to the exterior in some of these pics? I thought you had to only apply these on the interior

LemonChiffon831 2026-02-16 15:34

Good catch!! It was because I was shrinking the film with a heat gun from the outside. Exterior parts are way more heat resistant compared to the interior parts

colokan2224 2026-02-16 17:49

Do you not drive at night? If you ever get into an accident it will 100% be considered your fault. God forbid if you ever hit a pedestrian or bicyclist at night you are going to be absolutely fucked. Just an FYI - I bet it looks cool enough to offset the risk right?

You don't need to convince me, try it on a jury.
