Well there's your problem!
Sadly a bit of a common occurrence. Looks like the bolt just fell out. What year is your Y?
2023. Hopefully its not a common occurrence for the juniper. since my wife drives a juniper.. but yeah, scary problem that i'm glad wasn't on the freeway.
Was there any noise or warning? How many miles?
Fremont or Austin built?
Ahhh yes. The good ole finely joined suspension bolt. Its only like a 6k repair. Luckily my tesla quality failed out in warranty.
Cant lie though though, it's funny that one little bolt can bend you over so easily. One bolt to rule them all...thanks Tesla.
Is your car made in California?
Same here partner
there was some strange noise when i turned but wasn't sure. only 11,370 miles MYP 2023. rarely drive it since i work from home.
yes, fremont. MYP 23
Jesus another post about this. Scary. Glad nothing happen to you. Every time I do a tire rotation that’s the first bolt I check just because all these post. Thanks
😬
Is this something that can easily be checked with the car up on a lift? Getting new tires soon, seems like a good idea to ask them to check the control arms...
Please let us know details of your Service Center’s assessment and repair. I have a September 2023 AWD Model Y Fremont build (18,000 miles) and getting concerned about numerous front suspension failures mentioned here and on Tesla Motor Club forum. Should I take it to SC to get it checked even though I have not experienced any symptoms?
I do periodic check by myself. Turn the wheel left or right and using handle light try to locate this bolt and look for the top to see part of ending bolt.
There was a recall for this bolt in 2020 for the same issue. Your picture shows no damage to the bolt, and appears the nut backed off. You should report this to NHTSA.
File a complaint on NHTSA site pls. Only takes a few mins. This happened to me last week, $4k repair out of warranty. https://www.nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem
Appears to be a performance build - so that means Freemont. Which makes me, a 23 YP build owner nervous…
Absolutely. And most folks with ears can hear metal things moving about, especially over speed bumps and through driveway curbs and such. Don’t forget that the control arm rubber is made out of garbage as well. So if the bolts don’t just release from being undertorqued the bolted part just rattles around
Can you be more specific? Is a handle light same as a flashlight? Where to check?
[deleted]
Same here 2023 as well freemont performance with 22k miles
Is this a common issue with these control arms I have about 30,000 miles on my 2024 myp I feel like I noticed some weird sounds under the front drivetrain
Brother in Christ you bought another one after owning one?
Seeing a lot of this lately. I thought all I had to worry about was the squeaky bushings
Have a Dec '23 Fremont MYLR with about 40k, no issues.
So as a ‘21 MYP owner with 28k miles, looks like something I should be anticipating. 😬
Maybe some blue thread lock would do the trick. Once the ice melts and I get a warm day it'll be tire rotation, and apparently bolt check, time. I feel like there is a random noise coming from my suspension when turning hard before parking in my driveway.
Dang you have less than me. I'm at 36.5k miles
How is this not a recall yet
I notice the knock sounds in the winter
I would absolutely get this checked asap. Happened to my wife's 2023 Fremont build Y with only 12k miles, I just didn't make a reddit post about it. I drove it once and heard metal clanking when turning very slow. Scheduled maintenance but soonest was three weeks out. Very much regret having my wife drive it again because this same thing happened as op, this giant bolt fell off when she turned into a parking lot totally disabling the drivetrain. The tow guy also said he has seen this a few times. All Tesla said was that the bolt just became loose and fell off... No other damage. Left it over night at the maintenance center and no charge, got it back the next day. I hate that she still wants to keep this thing.
I have a 2023 model Y from Austin. Is there any way that I can easily check this? Or should I drive it to a mechanic and have them check it out?
I think there are photos which show which part to observe. You have to see beyond the front wheel and the head of bolt is on the bottom. I know is now clear and i cant find words to explain it better. There were photos posted a year or so ago.
Is it possible to schedule regular maintenance with mobile service to have this checked along with tire service? what should we include? Have a 2022 MYLR that I bought used couple of years ago, and has around 44k miles
As such a known issue, wondering why this isn’t a recall. 🤔
Ya report it so we can get a recall on it
Thanks, I did find visuals online on how to do this.
Seems somewhat common. Bolt was likely already close to falling out if that’s all it took to break it
Nothing snapped. This is as easy as putting a new bolt and nut on it and torquing to spec. All the info is right in the Tesla service manual. Public info.
link?
Is this a Fremont thing? Should I be concerned as a European 22 MYP owner?
Is there something I can ask Tesla to do to prevent this from happening in the first place? Also have a ‘23 MYP with 35k+ miles
Google this for AI to provide info: tesla model 3 control arm how to check without removing tires
Does the service manual show this particular bolt? Have not had a chance to look. I sometimes get a knock from the control arm area when maxing the turn radius backi g out of a driveway.
Say your car is making noise from the suspension, can you take a look for me??
I think the MY and M3 have the same bushings. I have a 2018 M3P and replaced the lower control arm bushings with MPP. Not difficult, but requires a press. They come with sleeves which prevent the bolt from moving around and loosening up over time. Slightly better steering feel, but maybe not $500 better. If you don't want to replace the bushing. 2 options. 1) Grab a marker and draw a line on the head of the bolt to the frame. Check at some regular intervals to see if the line no longer matches up between the bolt and frame. Option 2) grab a 21mm socket and remove one bolt at a time. Put blue thread lock on the end and put it back and torque to spec. Shouldn't have to worry about it coming out anymore.
Every time I see someone post about this issue on here it's Fremont!!!!!
I should also mention the compression rod bushing is pretty crap and for me was very cracked and close to failing around 50k miles. I noticed because my alignment went out suddenly. This is located further back from the lower control arm bushing and only has 1 bolt. Also replaced with MPP but they are much noisier because they are solid bearings. There are other options to replace them with if you have a press, but probably at least want to have a good inspection of them if you are around 40k-50k miles.
Had this happen to mine (2024) it’s so common at this point, there should be a recall
Damn, this is alarmingly common. When is there going to be a forced recall to get Tesla to check these on everyone's cars? Is it going to take people dieing first? Amazingly the vast majority of these I've seen have been at low speed.
Yes take it and just complain about noise issues when turning into parking spots
Haha same
You can also jack your car up and remove the tire and turn the wheel and you can check it there. I would spray degreaser on it to prevent seizing. Above what could have happened they didn’t give it a proper torque.
Hi OP, the bolt didn’t snap off, it just got loose from the upper control arm. However since it is out, Tesla recommends replacing those bolts. Since your car is under warranty they will cover it. My MY21 wasn’t lucky after hitting our 58k mark
I got you both beat! My ‘21 Y FSD only has 21,200 miles! Is this a problem with all Teslas or just 2023?
My Tesla Y FSD only 21,200 miles! Is this a problem ALL Tesla owners need to look for?
Makes me so scared to use it for camping, which i do. But so far , been good since the replacement. 🤞
I just had mine replaced this past Monday cuz the car sounded like a pirate ship. $1933. Feel like new but, this should already be a recall.
+1! See also https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2021/RCLRPT-21V835-8925.PDF
damn. i'm gonna be mad if they charge me.. this is their fault. i think i might be under warranty
will do. monday is a holiday so we'll see what they say and i'll keep everyone posted what they say.
yeah, my wife got a 2026 model y and i'm hoping this is fixed for this model.. cant believe a bolt can just fall out.. they should use the adhesive they use to glue the tow hitch to the cyber truck..
damn.. mine is Oct '23 Fremont MYP with only 11,374 miles. I work at home and everything is near my house thus the low mileage.
yup. already did, gotta keep reporting this issue until we can get a recall and have all the model Y fixed. especially when people who own model y tends to be family.. if it wasn't for family, it'd be some 2 door low to the ground car haha.
thank you!
i see, thank you. i hope so and they use some really strong adhesive hopefully. i feel like i got a bad batch.. i'm constantly at the service center since day 1..
i did. gotta do my part to get this issue recalled and make it safer for everyone
i found this video [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShBBuNzOdro](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShBBuNzOdro)
Have to cross the state monthly and lots of road trips!
The bolt is cheap right? It causes 6k damage ?
I noticed a very loud creak from the front wheels when I turn my steering wheel on an incline. I just need my control arms to make it until my R2 reservation is called. I love my 2021 Model Y, but I'm ready for some better suspensions.
Normal.
Not sure but I scheduled a visit with my local service center to have them check it out. I think it was $185 estimate but I imagine if they find something needing to be repaired it would be covered under warranty.
Where is this bolt and how can I check it? My 2024 is making the heavy chunking noise when turning at low speed.
US factories are garbage. China built quality is much better, sadly
oh god, please dont drive it and take it to the service center. [https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ZWA2xOHnWww](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ZWA2xOHnWww) [**https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ms2j-C7k2vA**](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/ms2j-C7k2vA) **see how he used the gun to unscrew it? its that piece i believe, turn the wheel and you should see it, sometimes there is a plastic cover, might need to pull the flap down.**
[https://youtu.be/OXpKUBlFsEo?t=44](https://youtu.be/OXpKUBlFsEo?t=44) he talks about the lateral link, you can see 2 bolts that goes upwards, i believe its these bolts overtime unscrews itself and falls off
Hi, They are going to replace the front control arm and lateral link they said and i'm still under warranty. I told them to make sure since I drive like fast and take corners fast and they said after this fix, it should be permanant, but i have my doubt.
yeah, I probably agree here as well. higher competition, higher standard
2023 MYP and mine is 11k miles lol. i work at home and mostly drive to get food nearby. so it can happen sooner.
Does this happen to 3 as well or just Y at the moment?
Happened to me at around 40k miles. They replaced arms links new bolts. Seems to be a permanent fix. They mark the bolts with a paint line. I check it every time I rotate now. So far zero movement after 15k miles. I can also see it just by turning my wheel all the way in one direction.
Happened to me. Clunking noise was loudest when turning into my driveway.
My was 23 Austin. Same problem
Sounds like it. Take it in asap
Really!!! That's interesting.... @op can you ask when you get it fixed if this was a common issue for 23?
Got my Y in Jan 2023. Started hearing creaking on full low speed turning while cranking the wheel that I never heard before. Didn’t like it and scheduled service. Repaired 2 weeks ago. They replaced the front lower lateral and compliance links on both sides. Glad I did it especially after seeing all this.
oh really? thank you for your response. kind of put my family on edge but thats great to hear.
thats great. i'm glad you scheduled service before it got worse. great judgement!
Could. Took out the subframe when mine went out, but who knows, maybe they were just trying to max the ins claim since it was under warranty.i should've asked to see the damage. That being said, I have seen another redditor have to have it swapped when their's went out as well.
Could you replace bolt as preventive maintenance?
According to grok, it 'mostly' happens (or hopefully 'happened') ,because faulty job at factory, but supposedly they changed the torque specs and added a compound (to me sounds like cheap fix) , before my model (23). I would say just inspect fairly frequently, listen for clicks and look for weird vibrations.
thanks
I honestly thought it was going to be a waste of everyone’s time and it told Tesla that it was likely nothing. It was a minor noise like grinding or creaking that only happened while turning to the max at low speeds when pulling in my garage or parking spot. Didn’t happen it steering wheel wasn’t being moved or if car wasn’t in motion. Sway bar broke on the highway while driving another car years ago so maybe I’m paranoid.
Same problem here- someone driving behind me noticed the tire cocked inward. All fixed under warranty and 1.5 years later no issue.
Any symptoms from this going bad? I’m actually getting a pop click sound front end. My service appointment is next week. I love everything about the car but have only about 8k miles on it
Get it checked out. Mine did something similar and stopped, I should have made an apt the moment I heard the pop sound
Yeah mine did it stopped and now is back again. I have the appointment 5 days from now. Seems to still be driving ok.
I went to the service center because I was hearing a loud noise at cold temps when turning sharp. We went on a cruise and tried to recreate it but were unable to. They lifted it up and said my control arms look good. Put me on a 30 day hold so if the noise comes back I can take it in immediately for them to look at.
